When I heard that the museums were free, I wanted to go to the Agriculture Museum but D. my proposed companion, was having none of it. He REALLY wanted to go to the Museum of Civilization. A sea of people, and me keeping track of two 6 year old boys - with EVERYONE (except me, it seemed) dressed in red and white.

The rest of the day was pretty low key (splash pad in a park, Vietnamese noodle soup, neighbours back yard barbecue and cold beer) - except for the part where we ran into a Mountie in full dress uniform on my neighbours' front lawn.

Today is Canada's 142nd birthday. W00t! From coast to coast and from the 49th parallel to the Arctic circle Canadians are celebrating today. Fireworks, barbeques and the resurrection of 80s bands (seriously, Loverboy is playing here) are on the menu at communities all across this country of ours. It is one of the few days of the year, along with World Junior Hockey finals, that we let our Canadianness shine and revel in it. Here's how Canadians are celebrating this year.

If the rain keeps you in today maybe you'll want to browse the Canada Day Etsy Sale. There's some lovely stuff there. Or maybe, if you have a well stocked craft room, you might want to try out some of the Canadian Living Canada Day Crafts.

Alas, celebrations in Toronto are a bit lacking this year thanks to the city workers strike. I was saddened to learn that among the events cancelled were the fireworks at Ashbridges Bay. I lived near there once upon a time and they were beautiful. Sarah at Unknown Toronto has a list of Canada Day activities that have been cancelled because of the strike and one of those that are still on. Nothing says Canada Day like Ribfest, right?

When I was a kid my Canada Day had an old-fashioned flavour. Almost every year we're head over to a local museum/heritage village and take part in things like three-legged races and potato sack races (yes, in actual potato sacks). We'd make homemade ice-cream and eat strawberry shortcake. Ok, there was a nod to the modern times we lived in with the presence of barbequed hot-dogs. Today, if the rain holds off, that's exactly what we are hoping to do by heading to the local agriculture museum for some of those very same activities (plus homemade ice-cream is never a bad choice right?)
