10 years ago, and on my first visit to Quebec City, I did the snail thing.

First we wandered into a restaurant called lapin something or other, having no clue what 'lapin' meant - until we had been inside for like ten minutes.

Maybe this place isn't such a good idea. Do you happen to serve salad - minus the formerly cute and now dismembered bunnies?

A bit later on, we were up a level or two of stairs on the steep climb up from the level closest to Fleuve St. Laurent. My companions (one being my ex) order some snails - these tiny teenie things that have to be fished out with a pin. Come on, try some...

another beer, please? And could you make that a third?

OK, I'm ready. Pass me a pin. I try one... nothing to write home about (aside from the telling that nelle ate snails!) but they weren't bad, either. Akin to a miniature steamers... which took not 3 but 6 beers before the first slid down my throat. ;-)

Seriously, it would not take such indulgence to get me to do that particular variety again, they weren't half bad, but were a lot of work.

It will be wonderful seeing her reprise the original movie role...

only thing better would be if she ignores Indy and partners up with another woman. Now that will grasp my full attention.

$5.00 jeans

I bbought a fabulous pair of jeans upstaris in Filene's Department Store in Boston about 6 years ago. They have a lovely embroidered vine up the side. They cost $5. Whenever I wear them, I get a compliment. I hadn't worn them in about 5 months and decided to wear them on the plane coming down to Charlotte from Boston and I got a compliment on them. If I had known how well they would fit, hold their shape and color, I would have bought the other styles they had that day.
I do feel a bit of guilt because I can only imagine how little the woman who made them was paid.

The other fine was a pair of authentic navy wool sailots pants in a thrift shop for $15.00.

Happy thrifting

I can relate to several items on Momma Bean's list.

My favorites:

I found patience (although not as much as I'd like to have)

I know how to cook (this came as a big surprise)

I appreciate my mom more every day (but still have a long way to go)

Those exit poll figures in 2 states not matched in nat'l polling

That's a whole lotta scare tactics about the Democrats being divided, but those stats come from exit polls in 2 states and are not at all supported by the most recent national polls on how Obama and Clinton supporters would vote when it comes to November.

I also think everyone is quite heated up because this is such a hard-fought race, but once the focus is on McCain, Democrats will have a whole different perspective on who to vote for and how important it is.

Warming up...

I've not yet ventured into the health care threads today, basically waiting for a time where 'it feels right.' So this is sort of health care debate foreplay. :)

Must it come down to government vs private sector, and scaring the living daylights out of people? Is there a shortage of creativity in America? Have we checked it at the door of options, 2? Is this really a black and white world?

Come on, I expect more from people.

First off, before tackling that directly, some points. Has government done a sorry job of handling social security in fact? No, not in how revenue might otherwise be used, but in the running of the programme? And in my own employment, that other part of the social security creation law - unemployment compensation - have we done a piss poor job with it too?

Is medicare truly a disaster, or has it helped countless people along the way?

OK... back to this creativity stuff. There are literally limitless options available to us. Hybrids of public/private systems. Coverage purchased in smaller groups - by city, by county, by state. There are the options of government being involved only as a reinsurer, providing certainty above catastrophic loss, or even poor loss ratios. Perhaps madating of certain parameters of coverage, and of providing disincentive to shoot down coverage for a procedure, only to relent far too late (as we've seen in the last few months.)

Changes in what constitutes eligibility for a family. The ages when children are forced to leave. Deductibles could be tied to income on some simple basis.

I belong to an HMO that delivers care like a POS plan, far different than what was out there 20 years ago for choices.

These are only a few things, mentioned to get people thinking. We are limited only by our own willingness to create new ideas and what boldness we might carry in trying them.
