Honestly, I can't believe it took such a horrific disaster to bring this issue to light but I'm glad improvements are being made for our animal family members. Your work here is also pretty impressive. If you were here, I would pat your head or at least scratch you behind the ear. I know how you like that! ;-)

I've been working on the Hurricane Wiki attached to Andy Carvin's HurricanesO8 ning site. I've specifically done editing on the Animal Rescue Resources page...and hope to get some more stuff refined tonight. It has been streamlined way down from the Katrina pets page - I tried to get out most of the dead links and stick to stuff taht can be used by pet owners/allies in any hurricane situation. It must be expanded to Texas and the Carolinas some, obviously.

I am so amazed at how well this has all come together. There are some truly talented people out there (me I'm just trying to figure out how to not "break the wiki." ;)) Pets is just one category- plenty of other important categories there as well.

And you are right that things seem to have improved - the shelters down there are still quite overburdened from the lack of electricity and water in some places, though - so if anyone has it in their heart/wallet to scroll through the list and see who's in need of what, that would be awesome.

(I'd link to Carol Guzy's Katrina pets photos but I can't look at them today - my heart can't take it. She did important work to get their story told...Here's her main page on WaPo.com which should lead anyone interested to her work.)
