Finally

Finally, a woman who disagrees with Sarah Palin but is willing to give her credit for her accomplishments rather than tearing her down with cheap shots and name-calling ("Caribou Barbie" and the like). I've written on my blog about the sexualization of Palin, which sad to say is being perpetrated in large part by female rather than male critics.

UPDATE on the teen mom budget item

At this post on my blog, a bloggy buddy left a comment with a link to information about that particular item. I'm going to link back to the link that the other links link to with the pertinent information, but here's a letter from the Covenant House.

“Covenant House Alaska is a multi-service agency serving homeless
and runaway youth, including teen mothers. The majority of the agency’s
annual operating budget is privately raised, with no more than 10 to 15
percent of funds coming from state grants in any given year. We are
grateful for the support we have received from Governor Sarah Palin,
the Alaska legislature and our Congressional delegation over the years.

Despite some press reports to the contrary, our operating budget was
not reduced. Our $3.9 million appropriation is directed toward a
multi-year capital project and it is our understanding that the state
simply opted to phase in its support for this project over several
years, rather than all at once in the current budget year.”

Emphasis mine. Many thanks to my friend.

The Washington Post article about Palin does not appear to be true according to this:

The group sent out a release to clarify the misinformation that was being reported.

I respect your right to an

I respect your right to an opinion.

And, as someone who had 4 cousins at the base of the Towers on 9/11 (3 NYPD, 1 Port Authority) and a brother-in-law who was a first responder in PA for Flight 93 and many family friends who died that day in the Towers working for Cantor Fitz?

Let me tell you how we felt in 2004 knowing that Condi Rice held a report in her hands entitled, "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in the US" where hijacked planes were mentioned as a possible weapons in attacks and recent surveillance on federal buildings in New York had been witnessed.

Well, that made all of our blood boil.

The Republicans in office didn't keep us safe from 9/11. They had the most specific information within years given to them in the beginning in August of 2001 and changed...nothing. Followed up with....nothing.

Physical safety is huge for me too. I have an ex-boyfriend who is Naval Intelligence who has been SHOCKED at how casually the Bush Administration treated security around nucelar materials in the US. In 2003, I forgot that I had a brand new steel paint scraper blade (about 3 in x 3 in) in my duffel bag. Security never caught it and I was the ONLY person in the damn line at 7 am. During my layover, I marched up to security and told them about the breach, gave them the blade. They silently took it away and never asked me for ANY of my information.

Morons.

This adminstration has done close to NOTHING of substance for security. At home OR abroad.

And if you are offended that I am being so intense about this, know that those of us affected personally by 9/11 and went to funerals have a clarity of vision of how things could have been different that those who watch it on Fox News NEVER could have.

Obama scares me to my core.

Sorry for my delay Mitegirl. I’ve been in a bad state the last 24 hours over here. I’m having some major female issues and am hoping to keep myself out of the ER. Massive blood loss is no fun and I'm very tired.

This may be my last post on blogher. Before I respond I want to wish everyone here excellent health and a properous and happy tomorrow.

To live in a country that allows us the freedom to express our opinions openly is simply amazing. We are all very blessed.

Just remember that for us, freedom isn't free. As Americans we've been given this gift to speak our minds because of the men and women that have gone before us to preserve and protect this country.

To answer your question, Obama scares me to my core because I do not trust that he can protect and defend me.

Unlike McCain, Obama has never had to lead people in crisis – and yes, I’m mainly talking about the fact McCain has military experience. Call me a war monger if you choose (I mean you in general, not Mitegirl specifically) but I’m ALL about protecting myself and my fellow countrymen.

All of your lives are important and beautiful. My web site (not a shameless plug I swear) was inspired by my desire to encourage people to live and live well.

Dead people can't live well. Does that make any sense?

When diplomacy and talking don’t work and when a crisis is at hand – I mean a physical crisis where your LIFE (breathing, walking) is on the line, I choose a man with who has been tested and has proved he is a leader in tough times.

Yes, I want a military man to be at the helm protecting my ass, not an attorney.

I have a very keen sense of intuition and it is usually right. My gut SHOUTS to me loud and clear “Obama is not the man to keep you safe from harm. He will place America in harm’s way.”

The last time my intuition was this strong, I didn't listen to it and my friend wound up dead. I had the chance to ACT to stop it, but I did not. In the end my friend made a choice but I am still haunted because I did not do more.

I believe Obama puts Obama’s interest and political aspirations before his country.

I want a man who puts country first. That man is John McCain.

John McCain is thoroughly prepared to be President and Commander-in-Chief.

When diplomacy doesn’t work one must be prepared to ACT. Action requires decision making. Obama, with his slew of “present” votes, has shown decision making and action is not his forte (although I think he is an excellent actor and performer).

I trust as President, John McCain will not back down when faced with hard decisions. I expect Obama, as President, will tax me silly, create more government, take away some of my freedom and put me and my loved ones in harm’s way.

Military power is NOT the end-all-be-all. Diplomacy must always be used but when it's time to protect and defend, ACT!

I will proudly vote for McCain/Palin this fall and I welcome them into the Oval Office with pleasure.

Sorry this is sooooooooooooo long.

May God Bless all the ladies on this board. If you don't believe in God, then simply.....ROCK ON and have a blessed life.

Namaste!

Let me try to be expand Becca - although, I admit I am not looking for anyone to "understand" my position, just respect that I have one. I am not looking to change your position. Seems most of the women on this board have made up their minds and I respect that.

Social issues mean DIDDLY squat if a terrorist blows you and your family off the face of the earth. Physical safety is HUGE for me. Always has been. Always will.

Dead people don't need medical insurance, fuel or an education. I am NOT staying these things are not important, they are, but I think the government's most important task is to keep me safe.

Does my position make a tad more sense now?

Denise, I can't wait for that post you're writing. Until then, however, I'm not sure what your opening paragraphs mean. Yes, I realized that. So? And I agree with your points about sexism. The charges regarding Palin are not having to do with her gender, but with her record--isn't that what you want to check. As for your assumptions being blind and your logic flawed, that was directed to Jane Becker (and others have since taken up those points). Your assumptions and logic are unknown, because you've never stated them. So, yes, I'm waiting for that post, to which I will listen respectfully and respond in the same way.

Mmmm. Wine. Versus whine. How refreshing!

Okay, here's the rest of Jane's points and the info she wanted you to see from the Chicago Trib (and elsewhere):

He is one of the most skilled Chicago politicians around.

He is a politician. He lives in Chicago. He doesn't work for and has never worked for the City of Chicago or Cook County. He is not "a Chicago politician".

But skilled, yes! Very.

The way he disqualified others so he could run for the state legislature

Actually, Alice Palmer's campaign disqualified itself by submitting unethical signatures on her petitions against the party rules. Obama's campaign uncovered and challenged the signatures and ethics violations, thus ridding us of Alice Palmer and her corrupt tactics. It was a good thing!

his association with the Daleys,

He lives in the same city. They work for the same party. If you define association that way, Mark Foley was closely associated with John McCain when they both lived in Washington.

Darn. Now "associated" is going to have all of these weird sex pervert connotations in my head. Thanks a lot, Mark Foley.

the raise he approved for his wife (in the days when she worked),

Her promotion and raise to VP of external affairs at the U of C Hospitals in 2005? The one given to her by the President of the hospital to bring her compensation in line with the other VP's? A raise that Obama couldn't have approved because his name isn't Michael Riordan (who was the person who approved Michelle Obama's raise)? THAT raise?

Newsflash! Barack Obama is Michael Riordan. A black man and ALSO a middle-aged white guy. That is AMAZING!

his finance chairmen who are oil lobbyists,

Shapiro? His adviser on, um, Jewish OUTREACH? The one who works for Timmons (which does lobby for the American Petroleum Inst., among others). Shapiro? The expert on foreign policy and the Middle East who has nothing to do with the role of finance chairman?

Is that the guy you're talking about? Or some other person? Cause that is the only one I could find.

the fact that he spent more money on superdels than Clinton

Yeah, having superdelegates sucks. The Democrat who raises the most money and has the most support gives the most to superdelegate campaigns because you CAN'T GIVE MONEY YOU DON"T HAVE. If Clinton had raised more, she would have given more. Republicans don't have superdelegates, lucky you.

________________

Anything else? Please let me know! I LOVE clearing this stuff up.

(Oh, and you're welcome Laracolvin.)
