Visiting Grandparents for holiday

Thanks for reminding us to include our seniors in the family holiday activities.

The cooking connection creates so many family bonds. And a family cookbook is the perfect way to preserve the family cooking tradition, pass on those great family recipes from one generation to the next, and honor the special cooks in your family, especially Grandma.

If Grandma has a computer (or bring your own notebook), why not consider a family cookbook project? It's a great activity to bring the whole family together, and the kids will definitely have fun helping out with the computer.

To create a family cookbook, there are many ways to go. Here's one website to create your family cookbook online that makes it easy and fun.

Great post! Our kids don't know how lucky they are to be poor! They have all the things that count. It is sad how families grow distant after the kids grow up. My siblings and I never really knew any of our relatives because they lived so far away and we were too poor to travel. That is one reason why we moved back to the mainland from Hawaii to live near my parents. I want my kids to at least know one side of their family. Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to bring family and friends together.

We're unable to travel this year. Instead of making Thanksgiving dinner, we're going to serve it to others at a shelter.That puts a lot of things into perspective and makes me thankful for what I have.

I didn't grow up with Thanksgiving so it always sneaks up on me and I tend not to give it the attention it merits with Americans. I can't decide whether I missed out on something or should count myself lucky not to have had another event where tensions run high. Fortunately, we have a very small family in the US so there's not so much drama.

Growing up POOR, gives you insight into the value:

of a dollar

of having warm clothing

of having regular meals

of having parents who show they care, despite that birthdays are simply cake and ice cream, maybe not a gift

of knowing that material things, once gained, can be lost and holding onto material things gives you no satisfaction

so hold onto your relationships

Convention of the Rights of the Child

Dear Kazari,

Thank you for your query. Yes, you are correct, the Convention of the Rights of the Child prohibits the recruitment of children under the age of 15. That is why after the Convention was originally introduced in 1989, the international community saw the need to do more to protect children. This became especially important as more and more children 15 years of age and older began to be recruited into armed groups. As a result, an additional provision, or "protocol," was added to the convention. The first Optional Protocol on the involvement of children in armed conflict came into force in 2002. It establishes 18 as the minimum age for compulsory recruitment and requires states to do everything they can to prevent individuals under the age of 18 from taking a direct part in hostilities. Also, in 2002 a second Optional Protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography was added to the Convention. It provides states with detailed requirements to end the sexual exploitation and abuse of children.
