Though it was a teen/college crowd space long before it was a family place. And teens need to learn that it's not just about them and their friends when they have family on their account too. Absolutely. I just kind of understand why he blocked his family after that.

Sassymonkey and Sassymonkey Reads.

My older kids started out with Live Journals and Myspaces and I didn't friend them there. They needed their space. Now, they're all on Facebook and they all friended me before I even had the chance to consider whether or not they would. I can even give my 19 year old a hard time about stuff I see on Facebook and have her friends come over and laugh at her mom giving her a hard time. She's cool with it all and so am I.

I also understood completely when she hesitated before friending her grandmother on facebook. She still hasn't friended her because while most of what she says and does there is fine, she doesn't want to risk troubling her grandmother when she puts a photo of herself wearing newspaper pasties and a skirt made of newspaper on her Facebook page.

~Denise BlogHer Community Manager
Flamingo House Happenings

Well, I got his mother's

Well, I got his mother's point. She could care less if he's swearing around his buddies. But the kid needed to learn that posting a status with the f-word was like saying it loudly in the middle of a family reunion while standing next to his grandmother. Eventually you learn that certain social places require certain behaviour. Unfortunately for some teens, facebook has become a social, often family realm, not just for teenagers anymore. If his facebook only included his friends, then whatever. Swear like a trucker, who cares!

Anyway, I never look at teenage profiles either, including my nephews. Most of their news is stuff I don't need to know! And I rarely looked at his unless he was posting family photos. But the status with the eff-word was there on all our newsfeeds, including his grandmother's, for everyone to see.

He got in trouble for swearing on Facebook? For real? Um, wow. Honestly, I'd probably block my family too if I were him.

My nephew and I are friends on Facebook but we largely ignore each other. I think we're both happier that way. I know I am. (Really, there's only so many "I love yooooouuuuuuuussss" between him and his girlfriend I can handle...and he's in his early 20s.)

Sassymonkey and Sassymonkey Reads.

I have been mentoring for decades and take the boys with me. I work exclusively with girls now. There is a student/teen center in my town in which we volunteer (me and the boys, a living example of how hard it is to parent, the kids play w/them for 5 minutes then put them down... I don't have to say a word about how hard it is, they see it!) and I help the girls with homework or whatever else they need. Guidance, a shoulder, whatever.

The boys have been volunteering with me since they were 5 months old and the center opened. I have quite a few mentees under my wing and yesterday, one of my mentees and I (she being off of school) took the boys to an apple orchard/pumpkin patch, got a ride on a wagon, did some really fun things. She loved it, as did the boys and I. The boys adore her, and I love her very much. Her family, too. I bought her family apples and cider donuts to take home. We painted pumpkins with fingerpaint and she took one home... very proud (she is 16).

Everything I do with her, the littlest things, are self-esteem building.

Anyone interested in mentoring can find a place where kids needs a soft shoulder in your area - mentoring.org

You will be criminally background checked at least once a year, since you are working with kids. It is the most rewarding thing I have done. The boys so benefit. They are learning without me saying... how to give back. And having fun with the kids as well!

It is going to be very hard for me to give the boys "the talk". I want them to wait for marriage also. It's very hard to know if how we live our lives will positively impact them or if outside influences or peer pressure will affect them. It's scary but all I can do is keep the faith! We are planting the seeds now, as parents, that will help them make wise decisions and be compassionate towards others, always!

Half of a Duo, Raising a Duo

http://micrimas.blogspot.com

I loved this entry. It was

I loved this entry. It was nothing if not thought provoking. It was also very scary. I think to myself all the time - what will I tell my son when the time comes? Will I give him condoms? How will I respond if & when I catch him in bed with another girl, or find the used condom under his bed or whatever? I don't know. All I know is I am a firm believer in waiting until marriage. I wish I did. And I don't know many people who don't wish they'd waited. I know faith has to be a facot in this somewhere. Telling myself it's a lost cause and abstinence until marriage is impossible won't help matters. At least that's where I stand for now. Until then I'm praying on it. When the time comes I trust that God will help me handle the situation appropriately.

Kudos to you on your work mentoring teens. That's something I'm very passionate about - but at the moment don't have the time to do since I spend all my time with my own little one.

Hot Flashes

Your description of hot flashes brought on a hot flash for me! After my surgery that induced my menopause I was really turned off to hormones (even bio-identical) and pharmaceuticals so I've been trying to deal with my symptoms through natural medicine. I get regular acupuncture, take some Chinese herbs, and use one of these to cool my bed at night: http://www.chilitechnology.com/ I've also gone on an all organic whole food diet - and eliminated sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and refined flour. So far I think I have it managed, but I'm not 100% yet. Just wondering what else people are doing as I'm always looking for other solutions.

I read it this morning as I was drinking my coffee and I've been thinking of it all day. Fantastic post.

But does this mean when my husband starts talking about music I need to keep listening to him in case he says something profound or important? ;-)

Seriously.

I don't even know what else to day except that I loved it. I love your boys. I love the video game story at the end and will try to remember not to tune out the video game rambling just in case there's a pay off at the end.

Also, I will try not to role my eyes when TW starts some new convoluted chart/reward system that I know will only last a couple of weeks. ;-)

World's Most Dedicated 4-year-old

Wow. I'd be curious to know how she came to that decision - is it something she overheard at pre-school? Something she saw on TV? I'd love to know the reasoning behind the switch.

I'm so impressed with her resolve - and so young! Whether she changes her mind or not, that kid is going places.

Not sure it has anything to do with the internet...

I think it could be that there is just more awareness to vegetarianism.

My 4-year-old decided 4 months ago that she wants to be a vegetarian. I didn't think it would hold up, but it has. And she's really strict, like she won't eat french fries that were next to a hot dog on my plate or anything.

Although I completely respect her decision, part of me definitely wishes that she would change her mind (which we've assured her is fine too). Another part of me really respects her for being able to make a decision like that and sticking to it - she started a month before she turned 4.

Honestly, I remember finding that out and being alarmed by this fact but with no vegetarians in my life, my family or in the media, it never occurred to me to take this course.

I applaud the kids of today - they are much more mindful than I ever was. Glad to see they are asking questions and pondering the answers.

For now, we all eat meat. But my youngest has recently inquired where does her steak come from, and when she realized it was formerly a cow, she said in disgust, "so I'm eating a dead cow?"

I can see her point and will allow her to make her own decision.

Martini Mom--Yes, you're right. Several years ago I interviewed a doc for an article about teen sex and she said, by the time they're teens, it's almost too late. Those talks have to begin early, when they're not so loaded.

As to the Hanes, well...:))
