Your kids only get one set of parents

My mom and I did not become friends until I was in my 20s. When the drugs were kicking in while I was giving birth I asked her why she wasn't so cool when I was young. She said you have had and can still get many many friends but you only got one set of parents. When you needed me most I had to be your mom now you need me a little less I get to be a friend and a mom when you need it. she told me she was glad becuse she got to steer me into being the kind of woman she wanted as a girfriend. My mom is gone now and boy was she right. I miss my friend but I miis my mom even more.

Turning Angry Moments into Teaching Moments

I try to remember to APOLOGIZE to my kids when I yell or blow up at them - so, while I am teaching them that Mommy gets angry sometimes (but I still love them very very much), I also know how to apologize when I make the wrong choice.

Being a best friend to your kid does not mean dressing

like them.

But making sure that you are totally open to them and that they know they can turn to you and have fun or mom time with you is what counts.

That is what my mom did. It was just the two of us through some tough times. It made us close...now she IS my best friend and a shoulder and someone who I can rely on when I just need a mom or someone to talk to.

We DID go clubbing together though..but that was fun and not her dressing like something out of the Real Wives of OC

Mom can be your Best Friend!

My mom, without a doubt, was my best friend! Let's put it this way......when she chaperoned me in high school, other groups of kids would kidnap her. I had to fight to keep her!! She knew how to balance motherhood and friendship beautifully!! I tell everyone she taught me how to fall on my face, with grace. She died from Breast Cancer in 2001 at the young age of 58. My son wasn't even two! Boy, did I feel cheated but, I just sit back, sigh and remember what she taught me . A mother's friendship is truly a gift.
