Ohhh, Devra,

I was referring to a whole different conversation about that dirty word--balance!! :-) Your efforts with your kids are right on!!

We do have moderation and balance

Somewhere I didn't express myself well. We only unplug for a day or two. I've never done it for more than that. I'm not sure where I made it sound like my kids are not learning moderation and balance. They definitely are. We have conversations together about what they want to watch on TV, what games they play on the computer, how much time for all of it is reasonable ,etc. They are a part of their own consumption and they need to learn how to self-regulate as much as possible.

Unlike me with Oreo Cookies. ; )

A Period to Detach and ReWire Helps Teach Moderation

The whole idea of going cold turkey for an extended period is to get some real detachment and gain perspective. This step is necessary for all addictions. This is why many diets require that you do an extreme initial period of withdrawal before you begin to change your eating habits. Its a rewiring thing.

So I agree with Ex Pat Mom that re-educating kids about moderation and balance (sorry, Devra!) are important so that they don't just resume their over-consumption. However, the message seems to get through more effectively if they've had a period away from the screen first. I've tried this with television for 30 days and it's miraculous!!

Think Act: Proactive Black Parenting

The radio is for me, not the kids.

I neglected to mention that when the kids unplug, I often unplug too. I'm an NPR junkie. I admit it.

Both of my kids are huge readers regardless if they are unplugged or not. Even when we take family road trips, and we do have a DVD player in our minivan, the kids will often choose reading over anything else.

To clarify, Aria Wallace is taking a 40 Day Challenge to unplug, when my children unplug it's only for a day or two. Or possibly a week if their manners have taken a serious nose dive.

I don't understand why the radio isn't banned. Apart from the odd NPR show, most of it is mindless noise. And what if a child sat for hours reading each day? Most parents wouldn't complain about that, even if it is a fairly isolated experience. Most readers (especially at the teen and tween age) don't initiate discussions about the book they're reading and more than they do about anything else.

Rather than having to ban everything electronic for 40 days, (and then presumably go back to the way things were), how about teaching kids that old adage "Everything in moderation"?

So just today I learned I have ON DEMAND as part of my comcast package...and it comes with workouts! Seeing as I cancelled my Blockbuster subscription in a fit of rage and have never gotten around to buying work out DVDs, this was a great discovery.

Nice Post. I lived in Hawaii

Nice Post. I lived in Hawaii for 2 years before moving to Colorado. Needless to say the weather is a shocker and I just can't bring myself to head out in the cold and snow to get in a workout. I have the Wii Fit and I just wanted to add that personally, the workouts are just not enough. They are fun and do get your heart rate going, but just not enough to constitute a good workout. Dance Dance Revolution is a decent video game workout too but again, maybe not enough. Personally, I love running around the apartment with my dog. That way we both get some exercise.

No WoW for Me!

With my ridiculously addictive personality, I know better then to
even touch that game. A good friend of mine keeps offering me a free
trial; it's almost like he's trying to get me to try crack for the
first time.

What I think is really cool is when you "meet" someone online and later find out that they're a chick because I don't know about you, but I always assume that a gamer is a guy. Even though I've been playing video games for years, the gamer = guy thing is still firmly wedged into my brain.

Another really cool thing is to watch my husband get his ass utterly kicked by a clan of chicks on Call of Duty 4. I think I enjoy that just a bit more than I should. :)

Ha! This post encouraged me to join Blogher finally because I LOVE WOW! I play <strike>too much</strike> when I can! My husband is a computer guy and he introduced me games like Age of Empires, Age of Wonders, and then I fell in love with Age of Mythology (yes, I think I have a thing for all Age of games LOL) and then my father-in-law introduced us to WOW. We love it so much!

Anyway, women gamers rock and I in guilds with quite a few mom/women players and it's awesome! Although, every now and then I'll be chatting with someone and I get asked what grade I am in ;-)

I, too am ever so addicted to WoW, and even run my own guild! Being a mom running a guild has made our guild the most 'chick friendly' on the server, and girls love being in the guild just because it means that they aren't feeling all weirded out all the time, and they know we try to provide an appropriate vent/guild chat environment. It is always nice to read someone else is obsessed as me haha!

I don't play any online games, cause that would be way to addictive for me, but we do have many consoles in our house and we have a weekly D&D gig every Friday night. We actually alternate between a D&D 3.5 campaign, a Vampire campaign, and now we are adding a D&D 4.0 campaign to the mix. Oh the useless knowlege I have.

Odd that I'd see this now. I just started WoW on the weekend. It's terribly, amazingly, profoundly addictive. I love it. I play with my SO and we're both at level 12 now. It didn't take long.

I know that he finds it terribly sexy that I play, though that's not why I do it. I played D&D and other roleplaying games before the advent of computer games (or real ones anyway), so this is simply a natural progression for me.

Vive les women gamers!
