I loved the way it smelled when it was heating up. I made some for other people too, and threw in a bit of lavendar.

Hmm come to think of it, I have no idea where mine is. I should make some more. ;)

I must have missed that one, I never knew september was sewing month, I tend to only sew SQUARES such as pillows, bags, bible cases, etc..

Ladies, I continue to be inspired by the response to this project. And yes! Sassymonkey sent the project some dolla dolla bills so we could purchase more purses. Thank you for that!

I think the community of readers responded with some of the best ideas. Each time I would write about it someone would suggest something that was so great for the project that I added to it. A few friends have told me that they can no longer go shopping without checking out the small purses so they can donate them to my school. People really are incredibly generous.

Too bad you are about 2000 miles and a country away. I'd zip over there and show you how to use your machine. The knot bags are a great learning to sew project.

Given the cost of shipping from Canada, it's probably better, though, for you to send money instead.

And those Japanese Knot Purses? OMG love. I have a sewing machine sitting here that I don't really know how to use. If I did I'd zip up a bunch of those puppies.

I tend to be a big purse person so I didn't have any to send her. I sent her some cash via paypal instead.

I sewed up a storm in September, finishing 3 and at least beginning 2 of my five planned projects. The nice thing is that I seem to have some momentum at this point, so will be keeping up the furious pace, I hope.

That looks like a fun craft event! Some interesting vendors. I rarely mention the regional craft events as they are happening, though I've started the season by mentioning some of the big ones.

Also on the east coast this weekend is the wool festival in Rhinebeck, NY. Many of us who are not there are celebrating on Twitter instead by attending #ImaginaryRhinebeck.

Didn't Even Know

Even with all the promotional emails I get from Joanne's I didn't even realize it was National Sewing Month until it was all over. I think the only thing I sewed this month were patches- lots and LOTS of patches onto my kids' Brownie and Boy Scouts uniforms. But isn't it amazing how many parents complain that the iron-on backs don't really work because they don't really know how to sew them on? Or they don't want to pay someone else to do it for them?

I"m new to BlogHer so you've probably talked about this before....but isn't it incredible that such a basic skill (I'm no master seamstress) isn't being passed down anymore as a matter of course? and isn't being taught in schools like it was just 20 years ago? It's sad. Anyway, thanks for writing on this. And Happy Sewing Month! Next year, I'll celebrate it with my Brownie Troop.

Purses, lots of Purses

I'm starting to sew Buttercup purses for Christmas gifts. My mother in law saw the bag I made for myself to take to BlogHer and asked me to make her one. I decided make a few more for some of the other ladies and girls on my list.

I did some mending. Not exciting but it was sewing.

HI,

I just had to comment I was surfing around trying to find a tutorial on how to make sports bras. It seems I can't just find a good one, so I thought I'd try my hand at sewing one.

I've just had so many ideas lately for new things to sew, but I just have to do it instead of surfing. I think you know what I mean.

This month I'm trying my hand at 'free motion' quilting, just to see if I can do it. I don't particularly like quilting, but I love fabric and sewing, so I thought quilting may be a bit quicker than sewing my clothing.

I've also got an idea of starting a sewing business, but right now need to find a niche. I love to sew I would just like to know if there really are sewing businesses out there that make money.

I do work full time right now as a computer anlayst. I'm also in my 50's. I don't feel like I'm old though. I also hate my job. I just don't understand management anymore. Maybe it's the age thing.

So do you think there is a way to make money sewing or am I just too old? Well I just thought I'd chime in and give you some comments.

I think we all get mending block. After all where is the reward or the pay-off for fixing something? I have an old quilt that needs to be repaired. Yet it sits mocking me every day without my doing any work on it.

And can you imagine anyone today taking the time to darn? I have a friend who can re-weave the yarns when a hole pops up in something knit; she could probably darn too. Yet even with people back to hand-knitting socks, I don't think we value the material or the time enough to darn a hole and keep them longer.

I'm not in the mood for mending, but I do need to either push through and take care of our pile of benched closthes or outsource it to my neighborhood sewing sorcerer (sewrcerer?). My Danish grandmother could darn a tightly woven patch that was indestructible. Probably bullet-proof. That is a lost art, by and large, so I'm glad someone is keeping the work alive.

Which, unsurprising to me, is the same point my husband frequently makes when I'm stuck at where to start writing an article. :)

Okay, I'll do it. :) It might not be today - today is a not-feel-good day and my brain is already starting to melt.

And seriously, nagging/heckling/cajoling is perfectly fine by me. I tend to be forgetful. :)

And thanks for the compliment on my writing style. It's always nice to hear stuff like that. :)

Seriously, write whatever you'd like. I enjoy your writing style. What it's like being a DDD in the land of B. How you decided to start. What kind of fabrics do you consider?

Do you start by disassembling your favorite bra? Before it's totally worn out? (gasp). I can find links -like the bramageddon one. But a great story is often the start, and I haven't that yet. Great writing and great stories make a good post great.
