Collecting rainwater previously illegal

This morning I was reading an article in the New York Times about the "legalization" of collecting rain water in some Southern United States. I could not believe my eyes! We've been collecting rain water for two summers now for the express purpose of watering the gardens and container plants especially.

I recently taught my son how

I recently taught my son how to drink form a sippy cup and boy, was it a mess! Mealtime has become one of my favorite parts of the day because of all the adorable faces my son makes. He uses this time to mimic me and my manorisms. I tilt my head to one side as I am feeding him. He will not do this at the same time, but later so I can truly observe how cute he is.

This was an adorable story & I look forward to my son sharing in a similar moment.

A big part of the problem is

A big part of the problem is simply our messed up factory farms, which cage up cows in environmentally-disasterous ways instead of letting them be part of the whole ecological system of an efficiently-run "real" farm. Although the diagram doesn't distinguish between them, I would guess that the water footprint of local, organic beef'd be quite a bit smaller than that of conventional beef --

is really interesting. Especially interesting that the absolute worst thing you can do in terms of water use is eat beef. We think if we change the showerhead and turn off the water when we're brushing our teeth, we've done our part. But not if you eat a steak afterwards.

And thanks to you, I don't feel guilty about it.

:-)

Seriously, water is an important issue. I wish those trying to find alternatives to plastic water bottles would realize that the issue of bottled water is actually less about the bottle and more about the water.

Echoing the sentiment and adding on...

It's true and truly unfortunate that many folks are satisfied with themselves if they fill their recycle bins to overflowing with all their water bottles and bags and bags of newspaper and junk mail...

Interesting that people latched on to Recycle, with little to no regard for ...

Reduce (decreasing your consumption ~ don't need to by crazy about it - just think first - do I need this brand new item? and/or is there an alternative?)

and my favorite,

Re-Use (which to me isn't limited to reusing something in the same way like cloth shopping bags, but includes upcycling and repurposing!)

I've only just started a photoblog to go with my social enterprise start-up, but it is filled with wonderful examples of re-use (like sweaters into mittens and trashion jewelry ~ yup, that's fashion from trash. Many of my examples are from etsy.com which I highly recommend as a wonderful source of inspiration, to be sure!

Sorry to go on but happy to have found your posts, greenlagirl!

There's a disconnect

in some minds. They think plastic water bottles are recyclable, so it's okay to use them. Then they toss the bottle in the trash, which means it's destined for the landfill. Anything that people can do to recycle (really recycle, not toss) plastic is good, and these ideas are very clever.

Righteous artwork

What an excellent (and beautiful) way to repurpose the dreaded plastic water bottle. And I love the fact that a $2 water bottle can be repurposed to sell for $75 as artwork! Brilliant. But I do agree with your underlying statement, which is to avoid buying plastic water bottles all together. Thanks for the enlightening post!

In my country, there are also many persons who have a creative idea like this. They utilize recycleable garbage to produce more worthy product with convensional manner, even without high technology process. Yes, hand made product. I think it is very creative and very good work.

Saving Face AND Money

Loved your post. It's amazing how susceptible we are to marketing! it's amazing how quickly our bottled water mentality swept the nation. Common sense is hardly common anymore.

It's very difficult for the average consumer to separate marketing from reality, and use their own informed judgment when it comes to making wise decisions as it relates to the environment. When I started my blog last year I started looking at items that I normally buy that are harmful to the environment and how to cut back or completely cut out certain things. Water bottles were an east choice for more than one reason, and I discovered that on average I was buying 5-7 bottles of water a week! When I added my husband into the equation it easily doubled the number to 10-14! I figured out that at over $1.00 per bottle we were spending over $650 a year (at least!) on a product that is FREE and drastically harming the environment...ugh.

I've also conducted many many interviews as part of my blog at http://www.earthsavers.typepad.com called The Earth Saver Interviews and you can read how thought leaders in the eco movement recommend ways you can make additional small changes that really make a HUGE difference.

Not to mention the carbon/energy used...

And it's not just the cost. The energy and carbon footprint of producing plastic bottles and then turning around and recycling them - if they are even recycled and aren't sent to landfills to not-decompose - is so great! That is mostly why we quit buying bottled water.
