Print magazines need to

Print magazines need to learn from what television has taught. Jericho on CBS had dismal ratings, but was a huge Internet hit. Had CBS found a way to track their online usage and take advantage, they would have realized how much success the show actually had. Shelter magazines need to find a way to exist and make money online. I think print still has a future, just one of a different technological makeup. Hopefully we will find some online magazines to replace the print magazines of old.

It is time for change

I am a blogger and a writer and although I have a monthly column in an interior design magazine, I find myself spending less and less time flipping through magazines. But I do miss these lazy hours "pouring through a magazine and daydreaming". And I am convinced that the ID magazines will not disappear, but they need to change. Because they began to turn into advertising magazines mainly. They just have to begin to publish more on-line and become thinner and more accessible as printed media.

Daydreaming

True - while websites can be an OK substitute for practical activities like clippings, etc... it certainly isn't the same as spending a lazy afternoon pouring through a magazine and daydreaming. Here's hoping you find something to take their place. Though an occasional shot of tequila can be fun, too ;)

I agree - I don't understand why Domino's website is folding, too. Even if Conde Nast isn't ready to be in the web-only property business I am sure they could have easily found a buyer. I hope it will be revived they was some disappeared consumer goods have been in recent years.

Magazine Junkie

Oh, no. As a magazine junkie it pains me to say goodbye to great mags like Cottage Living and Domino. Two of my favorites. Flipping thru a magazine is a huge stress reliever for me. I love to plan, dream and just plain waste time with my head burried in a magazine. Now, I just may have to resort to a bottle of tequila instead. Please bring back my glossies!

Am I missing something?

I agree that flipping through a magazine can be relaxing, even cathartic... It's like a mini vacation from all the stress and responsibilities, a guilty pleasure, a much-earned reward... Domino will be sorely missed by me!

Here's my question: Must the demise of the magazine force the magazines' websites down as well? Is this because the solo blogs have equally good content? Due to the surfer mentality we have? The cost of maintaining an e-zine?

I'm just wondering while I hold off flipping through that final Domino edition...

Good catch!

Thanks, Candelaria. There are so many that went under, it's hard to keep up and mention them all. I have previously read a bit about Mary Engelbreit's business model and it sounded wonderful. I am sorry that her magazine and coverage of working artists went under. Yours is not the first complaint I've read about the Martha Stewart substitution. Magazines generally succeed with readers because they fill an unfilled niche and there's not another one like it around. It's a similar lament heard about Domino.

Here's hoping that some of these titles might be reincarnated in some form as the economy improves and advertisers better figure out digital.

Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion bit the dust. I liked it because it featured stories and a peek into the studios of working artists and crafters. It was published bi-monthly and I am not happy abou the substitution of Martha Stewart's magazine.

Enfranchising

If I read correctly what you're writing, you like including people who are impacted and I agree. I do like having father's input - after all, although I know it's easier to take care of my kids sometimes when the spouse is away, I still appreciate that he exists and DOES do plenty of the parenting. So for sure they should be addressed in magazines and have a seat at the table, as we're asking for at news roundtables - though these are not exactly apples to apples.

I think you're probably right re: having women at the roundtable regularly v. having the moderator job only or having that be something where we'd then be told, ok - you are the moderator, no need for women on the panel. Obviously that's not okay.

I have a friend who left a comment at my blog on this topic re: Meet the PRess who stressed that we have the best and brightest and that should hopefully take care of it in a perfect world, but the problem is, right now, there is no trust that people who don't look like us or live our lives will by default remember to include us when analyzing situations. Until then, we have to keep being vocal.

So in that sense, yeah for the dads getting on the parenting mags' staff and yeah to the women getting on the roundtable shows.

Dads and parenting

I move more in an online than print world, and with a 22-year old, I'm past the age where I read parenting magazines, anyway!

Still, I welcome fathers' voices to the world of parenting publications. It was pretty lonely going for my family in the mid-80's with a non-traditional parenting arrangement (stay-at-home dad and working mom). I find it refreshing to hear more from dads, and think it's great that sites like MyParentingSource include a father as one of its parent coaches.

As for Meet the Press, I'm much more interested in women getting a seat at the table -- regularly. It seems to me that the television media doesn't do a very good job of seeking out qualified women for these kinds of roles. Just another reason why I tend to get my news and commentary from NPR. I don't think you can beat The Diane Rehm Show for inclusive, topical discussions.

Great expression of the one hand and the other hand

Laura, you totally nail the conundrum. I felt the same way watching David Gregory this weekend on Meet the Press. Did anyone else catch this?

There he was, the new moderator, when we know there were a couple of women in the running for the moderator (at least a couple) and NBC really could have made itself stand out for a Sunday morning news show by having a female moderator.

But no - they picked Gregory. Ok - he's fine - he's done the time. Whatever.

But then who was on his roundtable?

Four women.

So - i started to think - would we as women, rather have the female moderator and a crap shoot for roundtable participants, or not have the moderator but be slam-dunk guaranteed that the roundtable will always have at least one or two women?

I don't actually know!

Feminism on an Uncomfortable Type

From the purely feminist angle, this is a good thing--as there should not be "male" jobs so there should not be "female"jobs. But on a non-ideological level, enough guys--back off and let us have some places where we can still reach the top (okay, as high as we can go until the big boss says "stop"). So we are supposed to applaud a man taking a woman's job? Is there an opening over at GQ for a woman editor?

So Hypocritcal

I was a little disappointed when I heard about this story. I thought that Jennifer Love Hewitt was being an excellent role model. She shamed the media for calling her fat at a size 2 back in February. She barely caused a blip on the magazine circuit when she was doing something positive. Now that she has gone down to, presumably a size 0 she is someone to be applauded.

Oh how brave she starved herself down 18 pounds! Oh good one Jennifer! Wow!

Since this is a rant post I hope no one minds if I rant here for a moment as well. You know what else grinds my gears? When an actress gains a bunch of weight for a movie and every talks about what a risk she took and how brave she was to put on 20 or 40 pounds. Oh how brave stick thin actress to walk around the same weight as most women in the world. Wow. That took a lot of guts to actually eat instead of starve yourself. What does that say to the rest of us? Are the rest of us brave everyday for not being a double 0? Are the rest of us brave for eating three meals a day and maybe a little ice cream or candy? It's such nonsense. It's not brave for an underweight actress to gain weight, its probably medically necessary.

Okay I'm done. Thanks for indulging :)
