Sadly True

Can I comment as a man who USED to enjoy porno? I see situations supporting this blatant lack of respect for women daily, sometimes too subtle for many to see or accept. Sadly, people, men AND women, don't want to see something that should abhorred by all for whatever reason. Having a daughter, for me, means changing things and forcing (too strong?) yourself and people around you to pay respect. I do my best for my daughter to grow up proud of being strong and to never let someone be less than honorable with her. How do I teach the rest of the world the same thing?

Going Green

What a great idea! I've become a huge fan of Kale and use it in a salad with apples, roasted almonds and toasted sesame. I'm going to try this for sure. Let me know and I'd be happy to share the Kale Apple Salad recipe. My 8 year old loves it...!

After 18 long months, there was much to celebrate with the women who supported me through the shock, tears, triumphs, drama and finally, the finalization. It felt very much like my wedding -- a way to mark a new moment in time.

What size are yours? I have three (so far, more probably this weekend as I am itching to plant), that are 4 x4. In fact I posted about this last week, click if you'd like, I have photos up:

http://mamafasha.blogspot.com/2009/05/v-is-for-victory.html

I really think it's the best way to go. Last night we had enough lettuce and chard from our garden for our main meal (for 8 people) to be salad. It was so nice!

Your beds look great, I can't wait to read more!

Love Salt!

I have 3 different types of salt in my cupboard right now. It is important to know when to use the different types of salt or things can go very, very wrong!

Yes. I've been thinking

Yes. I've been thinking about writing a post about the fallacy of the sisterhood. I attended an all-girl highschool and can attest to the viciousness of girls. Recently, I've experienced some personal backlash from a bit of snark in one of my posts. The thing is that the women offended have just cut me off -- no discussion, no reasoning, nothing. Men would never do that. I'll have to refer back to this.

I ate them and served them to my family while getting out of debt... Mix with rice, and you have a complete protein and a lot of bang for your buck.

In fact, we still eat them, and ask our selves...'Wonder what the broke people are eating?'

Yeah, I Know

Three times in my life I've been hit by men. Once, a boy I had been dating for a while got angry with me because I wasn't in the mood for sex. We had had sex before but that day I just didn't feel like it and he hit me and threatened to drive me to another city and leave me there. I was frightened but I fought back and he drove me home.

Another time, I was in college and were at a party, again someone I had known for a while, but had never dated. He wasn't drunk but his friends claimed he was to campus police when he asked me to dance and I pulled my arm away and he slugged me so hard I saw stars for a while. All because I wouldn't dance with him.

And the last time - same scenario - guy tries to push up on me, I say no and before I know it we're fighting. I actually wrote about this on my blog and how because of this incident and another, I do not trust our local police.

And I consider my life to be fairly normal. But I see now that these incidents of violence have changed me. And I can't help but think and pray for the sistahs who have to endure this sort of violence every day.

Hi Denise and thanks for commenting. I was hopeful that this would pass and that as she matured, that she would outgrow it. I guess I have to come to terms with the fact that this is just a part of who she is........

Thanks for commenting...

My daughter is actually involved in several extracurricular activities. She plays the violin, bass guitar and she is a Girl Scout. She absolutely enjoys these things and evertytime she has a concert, recital or earns a badge, etc., she's extremely happy. I encourage her to keep up her good work in these things as well as her school work. I know that she's very hard on herself and I tell her that there's no need to be, especially if she doesn't place first in a game or something. And it's funny how if she plays a wrong note or chord, that she'll try it over again without hesitation, she doesn't even sweat it.....

But thanks for your imput. I really appreciate it and congrats to your son for moving up two belts!!!...Way to go!

Just a tidbit that might help...

I was this little girl about twenty years ago. I was a straight A student k through 12th, and anytime I didn't get something right, I took it very hard. To some extent, it WILL always be there; it's who she is. BUT finding balance is key. Hobbies. Or maybe an extracurricular activity. A sport, playing a musical instrument, art classes, etc. Find something she is interested in, and encourage her to stick with it. Now, by encourage I don't mean force her to keep doing whichever hobby she chooses. It simply means encourage her. An activity like this will keep her self image up, because she is a hard worker that will no doubt do well and shine...BUT it is also something that she can always improve at. For example, my son takes karate. He started out as a white belt and quickly moved up two belts. This has motivated him to keep working hard, but he still knows he is not Bruce Lee. I hope this helps!
