Buse not McCain

You started your post as a question about Buse and his hypocrisy. I responded explaining why I was on Buse's side. Had you written the post without mentioning Buse, I wouldn't have answered because I'm attempting to avoid purely political discussions.

As a registered lesbian democrat voting McCain/Palin, we're just going to have to disagree and I find that perfectly acceptable. :-)

somethings we can agree on

I see your angle. I would also like to see government out of family issues. I would be happy to not pay the taxes for the benefits I don't receive, but I don't see that as a logical path for our government. So I vote for what I believe is achievable, not necessarily what I believe would be perfect.

As for Dr Deb, she was a "late bloomer" and entered the service while married to a MAN, then somewhere along the line realized she was gay and is now stuck. I have sympathy for her. The law requires her to lie about her family, not change her life, just lie about it. And not enable her partner to be contacted as family would in the event of the worst happening. That can't possibly make sense to anyone.

I truly think both of these issues (gay marriage and DADT) will be non-issues in the next administration , regardless of if the white house turns red or blue. But your positions are not hypocritical. Your positions are based on other beliefs. McCain's platform has been explained clearly and is based on bigoted beliefs.

It's the hypocrisy that gigs me!

My position

No, I don't agree that it's ok for your partner not to have your benefits while the Senator's wife gets his. Exactly the opposite. I don't believe in any benefits for marriage and think we should be fighting to get government and government benefits out of marriage, not fighting to get ourselves into an already flawed system.

Regarding the woman who has been in the service and now finds herself unable to have a joint account with her partner - I have little sympathy since she knew DADT existed before she joined the military. She's been in almost 20 years, so I understand why she's not getting out right now, she wants her retirement benefits.

No my argument is quite a long way from legalizing murder. Murder is already against the law, having it "more" against the law because it's somehow a hate crime makes no sense to me. It's already against the law to vandalize someone's property - having it more against the law because it's a hate crime doesn't stop the hate or the crime. It's extra legislation, and that's it.

not so funny to me Denise

So help me understand being gay & against gay marriage. It’s intensely personal for me and I don’t understand someone who would want to prevent me (and other LGBT folks) from protecting my family, so help me out.

Here’s my quicky story: I have been engaged forever to my partner as we wait for laws to change. We are having a child and I constantly worry. We have all the legal documents to try to “simulate” marital rights but there are many protections we just can’t get. One thing that bothers me most is when you get your annual Social Sec statement. I’ve paid in the max for over a decade yet if something happens to me, my partner gets nothing and my child won’t be recognized as “my child” because of DOMA. My neighbor’s (who is also our senator) wife will be able to stay in their house - his SS death benefit will almost cover the mortgage, but my partner, a hard working RN, will never be able to afford it. My earned death benefit for spouse and 1 child is $3901 per month. But she will never see that money (that I earned and I payed in) because gay marriage is not legal. And you support this position? I’m being cheated out of almost $50k a year for my family if I die - yes cheated, because I can’t take that money and pay into another plan (insurance or the like).

Here’s another question. We have a friend in Jersey who is a Dr in the Army. She has been in the service for almost 20 years. She was married (to a man) when she joined. She and her partner cannot have a joint bank account, nor both be on the mortgage so the house is in her (Dr) name only. They have been together for 8 years. If she is called to go abroad, her partner will not be notified of her death or injury nor receive any death benefit. All because of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. You believe this is fair and just?

I tend to agree with you on the hate crimes and ENDA legislation, but I believe your argument is not too far from “legalize murder just because I don’t think incarceration is a deterrent.”
These protections are guaranteed to Americans and their families. They are rights we are all “taxed” for and they are rights we should all have. But you are against it?

Tina Righter

Count me on Buse's side

I'm a lesbian and don't support gay marriage. I'm also not horribly opposed to Don't Ask Don't Tell, having spent all of my youth as a Navy dependent and most of my adult life as an Air Force wife. The hate crimes bill, well I have a slightly different take on that but am generally anti legislation and tend to believe that you can have all of the hate crime bills you want and you're still going to have hate crimes. Legislation doesn't end hate or crime.

I had someone not too long ago tell me that my partner couldn't be both a lesbian and a republican and it bugged me a good bit even though I often gave her a hard time about BEING a republican.

Now here I am, registered democrat, planning to vote McCain/Palin.

Life is funny.

Alaska is different

I'm from alaska. the picture of the bears next to my post is from Alaska.

Alaska is completely different than the rest of the country, but they have their share of extremists. Ok, I get it, the weather is enough to freeze a few brain cells, and if you get hit in the head enough times by a crab pot or a hockey puck, damage can occur.

Crazy views get crazier when you're isolated and don't have the opportunity to listen to other's points of view.

Hello, alaska is not a colder version of Seattle or Columbus or Miami. There aren't that many paved roads! Almost everything that we take for granted, is not available in Alaska.....like decent health care, like regular garbage pick up, like, oh gosh, internet access.

Want to be scared out of your mind, get sick in Alaska, try to find a specialist.

Wake up America, Sarah Palin is an extremist who represents a tiny slice of this country. She's intolerant of other's views.

The last time we saw this type of behavior, someone who shoots first and asks questions later, a lot of Americans died in Fallujah and Iraq.

I love the title of this post so I had to come check it out. I agree with you completely that the US needs to start dealing with sex head on. Not only in the political realm but especially in the health arena. Sex as a "taboo" topic is one of the main reasons why HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases continue to ravage Americas and especially teens and young adults. If we were able to look at politicians as equals that happen to have a job representing us we would admit that infidelity often comes with marriage, not that I condone it but it is reality.

The US needs to loosen up and perhaps some real change could happen.

Rebellious, I hadn't thought about the waves of immigration that by rights might have made a difference in the culture. It is an interesting question, given that immigrants have so shaped and changed other aspects of our lives. Wish I knew the answer!

I love the title of this post!

So true, this weird obsession and subsequent hypocrisy with sex is ridiculous. I wonder if those politicians who are now trying to revise the definition of abortion as anything that prevents a woman from becoming pregnant using condoms in their assignations?

How is it that each wave of immigrants to this country takes on the mantle of puritan attitudes towards sex? Why haven't they succeeded in loosening things up?
