Great Post

Ah, SMART goals. I remember those so well from my corporate life. Still a good approach, of course. Consider making sub-goals to help you achieve a larger over-arching goal for the year. This helps each step to feel less overwhelming.

I do love the imagery of the treasure map. it makes me think of old parchment and Treasure Island.

I joined in with the dream boards last month.

And that was a truly wonderful experience.

I find the idea of vision boards overwhelming, so i tend to just pick one dream/wish/thing at a time.

Last months my dream was 'Strong hands and a fearless heart' and it's stuck with me.

Maybe this months wish will be 'Peace big and small'

Hi Debra

My personal issues will be all over the board, too. There is a lot to "unpack" within my phrase "health and weight" -- just my way of referring to a lot of personal/private issues. But I will also put references to th world issues as well, as I think if it works for individuals, why not a larger group as well?

As far as images go, I am using a lot of images from the net and printing them -- plus buying a couple of appealing magzines off the rack.

Treasure Map.. Vision Board...

I've read of this practice usually calling them Vision Boards. I like the Treasure Map metaphor better! I've been gathering images and thinking about words and goals to begin mine with. My treasures are far more personal than yours, though I may choose to add some of yours to mine.

My main stopping point in doing this has always been that I don't subscribe to magazines, so I've always been confused about how to find images to use.

lock my blog while I build anew (see the forums section, on blogs.) Otherwise I'd link you to the spirituality page.

In this part of the country (New England) reiki is gaining in popularity. Most of our hospitals offer it to patients. A very dear friend has long been a reiki master (she originally learned in the UK) so I've sort of danced on the periphery of it... but things work in funny ways, and when I was finally in a position to fully appreciate and make use of reiki, there it was.

a couple of links.. the first one is an organisation that certifies those who teach reiki. The second is on the programme at Portsmouth Hospital, one of the first in this country ten years ago.

http://www.reiki.org/

http://reikiinmedicine.org/pdf/springhospital.pdf

You are correct in stating reiki is a compound word. There are symbols for both elements of the word, and that is taught in the level one class. 3 more kanji symbols are tought in level 2. We were taught one other, non-kanji symbol.

When I googled Reiki (because I don't have direct experience of it) I saw this comment:
" The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy.""

I'll read more....sounds interesting and I have been meaning to learn more...any references you can provide?

I think it is in Mark that Jesus is quoted as having said "all things are possible to him who believes" Believing in possibilities seems very Christian to me, and does not have to stand apart from my faith as a Christian. I think what we select from disciplines other than our primary faith can enrich our faith. Granted, we don't have to become Spiritual Cuisinarts, turning everything into mush, but when a good tool comes our way that helps us understand prayer, for example, as this visualization can, well...it just makes good spiritual sense to use it. We agree. :-)

Creative Visualization

While it is mainly New Age thinking, Shakti was one of my favorite authors on the idea of Creative Visualization. I think when going through that phase, I had gotten married, moved to a new city and had no family or friends near me.

Upon finding a new job and meeting new people, the ideas discussed in the book brought positive things to my life.

While I have embraced my Christian faith more, I can't discount the benefits that authors like Shakti had on me at a young age.

Good post...

I've been in therapy since November of 2002. After visiting with my therapist in January, I realised that the once a month visit, while immensely helpful, still was not enough. I had to do more, had to have a way to deal with things in the moment, real time, and work at day after day.

I recalled an article in a local weekly on a local business that offered yoga classes for women, as well as a few other adjunct services. It took a while to find the old article, but once found, sent off an inquiry. A nice response came back, suggesting the best path for me might actually be through services offered elsewhere, and she linked me to the place.

And here it is, about 4 months later, and things are quite different.

I met with a reiki instructor, and we hit it off splendidly. At the end of March, I certified in Reiki levels I & II. It has changed my life in so many ways, and is *exactly* what was missing, what I needed to find. It meshes well with my spirituality, a nice complement to it all, an actual pathway in life. It is my intent to certify Advanced this fall, and next year tackle Master level.

Focusing towards the positive is a wonderful thing.
