I quit drinking a little more than 9 years ago after 12 years of drinking. It was not an easy road but I did it. I walked away from all the people who still drank and just changed my life. Yes we do recover.

Thanks, it helps to know I'm not alone. As busy as life gets sometimes it is easy fo feel that way and not remember that millions of women have done this all before me.

The Feeling Is Mutual

My daughter is 6 months. She is my only daughter (two older boys) and I wanted and wished for her for so long. There are times when my happiness is so overwhelming I think I am placing too much on this precious baby girl and like you, if I hold too tight she might be taken away. I always laugh at the saying that God made babies cute for a reason, but its true. He also made a different kind of love for children, a painful love, an all consuming love that transcends all others. Being a mom hurts, but its a pain I will gladly endure.

Making the Change

Do you think blogging by women is making a difference in society about what is treated as acceptable and unacceptable with the treatment of women in the media and society?

When I started reading this I was thinking of how I started coloring my hair at university because that's what I could afford with a different look - broke uni student thing etc - and have simply kept on with it. I now have a heap of grey but I earned that through life experience rather than age - it's amazing what shock and grief does to hair!

I'm going to keep coloring my hair but that's for me, not the media or society.

So I kept reading the post and comments and saw that this is about challenging media and society. I'm wondering if this challenging is being backed up with the economic power we have with our wallets - do you still give money to businesses who violate your beliefs or do you financially empower the businesses (in these difficult econmic times) who treat women with respect?

The discussions being held in blogs gets noticed by the big boys in the media (really, there still aren't many women in power in the media) and if they are sensitive about their profits then surely they will choose to listen to the growing volumn of voices in blogs - but maybe only when they figure out where the money is.

If you do love some aspects of a beloved newspaper, station or magazine but find some of their material stupid then let their advertisers know if the editors don't listen. The owners will start listening if their advertisers start talking.

Then of course there's the treatment of women of women. A friend of mine had a woman tell her off for feeding her baby in her own car while a scarf over it all - censoring by women of women. As women we need to be kinder to each other. Compliment another woman for how she looks, what she's doing and smile to each other - see the differences happen at a grass roots level there.

Remember, you get better results with kindness and good manners than being rude and angry.

Kind regards,

Belinda

I am scheduled to have breast reduction surgery tomorrow and I am very nervous. I am DD and they want to take 600 cc and make me a C. I am afraid that they are going to be too small. Has anyone had this experience that can give me some feedback?

I appreciated your help

I'd Like to Help

Like you, I also have a family history of breast cancer, which is just one reason why I support the fight against breast cancer. Personally, I buy the products in October which the money goes to help find a cure, and I participate in at least one fundraising event (it is Strike for the Cure this year...yep, I am bowling). With my job I was happy to discover I was able to come up with a campaign for my company to donate a percentage of sales using this link, Taylor Gifts Breast Cancer Awareness, to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. I plan on blogging at least one more time on our company blog, and I will certainly link to your post from today. Thank you!

great post

I agree with your post. Many times people buy things or use money and finances as a way to cope and cover up an underlying issue. Weather it's the feeling of not being good enough, looking for something outside yourself to make you happy, or complaining about finances because there is something in your life that you feel is missing. Great post!

NO happily Ever After

Great points! We've bought into the notion that being single is a TEMPORARY place of UNCOMPLETENESS on our way to the BIG PRIZE: couplehood/familyhood. Even when movies are breaking molds about fitting in, FIONA still marries Shrek and has babies, SJP gets the guy at the end of the movie. I write about this all the time at http://specialktreatment.blogspot.com/... The ideal is marriage...That's why we don't see spinsters in stories...

Gena, I'll definitely have to pose those questions to the group. So far, of the folks who have RSVP'd, it's predominantly female, which isn't much of a surprise to me. That said, I'm looking forward to hearing the male perspective on these issues. There definitely doesn't seem to be as much of a stigma attached if a male is a "permanent bachelor." Hmm, I'll have to ask about that perception, too. All good stuff.

Excellent - I Have Your A Question or Two

Being single does not negate the need for community or friends that can back you. So outside of the marriage and family structures how will single folks re-define friends, good friends and those that support you through difficult times.

There is also a question about new kinds of living arraignments. Some live single, other by financial necessity might be looking at co-housing or communal living.

I have a feeling there will be so many others questions that leap ahead of these to the point where you are gonna have to kick folks out the door as the discussion continues.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Gena,

Thank you for such a full and detailed answer. Let's hope personal income and the economy improve and inflation abates. I appreciate your implied point that if we use less energy (electric or plastic disposable)we will reduce our own personal carbon foot print. Your out of the box thinking should be put forward as legislation in this highly charged election year.

I am gonna have to pony up cash to purchase that DVD. It will be an issue with the Boomers coming over the horizon.

The way I see it as the price of personal care services and items rises in conjunction with the loss of discretionary spending, I'm sure we will see the decline of bare labia both majora and minora.

I say let it grow, let it flow.
