Some great choices!

I'm going to have to try those! I've seen the tourmaline face mask by Aveda but never tried it before. And thanks for that link to Marie Veronique. I'll have to see how this changes things for my skin this winter!

Mocha Momma

Winter skincare I can't live without

Marie Veronique Organic face oils and sunscreen are the best! The oils keep my face moisturized even in the cold dry mountain air. The sunscreen was featured this week in Style.com:

http://www.style.com/beauty/beautycounter/2009/11/au-naturel-color-corre...

I think the secret is

I think the secret is Clarins Beauty Flash Balm - it really brightens up winter skin, when mine is looking grey and tired at this time of year! My sister swears by Aveda's tourmaline face mask - and she looks great, so it's worth a try.

Kids

All of my kids develop such dry skin in winter that they have to wear sweats - jeans and other heavy fabric chafes their skin really badly. My pediatrician told me years ago not to add anything to their baths as all soaps are drying. So I don't, and it works. I also make sure they lube up before they're fully dry and it helps.

Dr Oz's advice on drinking water

I love your moisturizing tips -- I lather up with body lotion after every shower and bath!

But, I saw Dr Oz's show last week, and a doctor on the show said that it's not how much water you drink that's effective. It's water on your skin that's the most important thing. That is, it's more important to moisturize when your skin is damp -- and less important to drink water to hydrate your skin. I guess the moisturizer "seals" the water to your skin.

As best as I can recall, the doctor said that drinking water doesn't do much for your skin. Now of course I'm questioning what I thought I heard -- did anyone else see Dr Oz's show? Am I totally out to lunch? :-)

And, has anyone noticed a change in their skin if they drink lots of water?

Cocoa Butter

My son as well as most of my family has Eczema. I use cocoa butter cream on my son with a few drops of tea tree and vitamin E essential oil mixed in. Not the white cream stuff this is a very thick greasy brown formula I think it is Palmers. We use Nutrogena T-gel shamoo and palmers olive oil spary on his hair. When we were younger my grandma used to mix medicated vaseline with cocoa butter, olive oil and mint for my cousins. That stuff worked wonders. None of us have been able to get the formula just right so we have had to resort to store bought stuff. I find that as long as I drop a few drops of tea tree and or pepermint essential oil in what ever we use our skin seems to be fine.

One the other hand I have found that the more junk we eat the more prone my son is to have an out break.

ShiKai Borage Dry Skin Therapy has worked for me and my kids

We've also used the California Baby Calendula cream, but the ShiKai lotion comes in a much larger bottle for the price. Borage contains one of the Omegas, which is supposed to be good for healing dry skin. I think Asian skin is more acclimated for humid climates. But oh well!

Cetaphil lotion is good, too

My 5-year-old has had eczema all her life, and we've found Cetaphil lotion to be pretty great as well. It's as good as Eucerin, but tends to spread a bit easier. She does shower every day, but then we SLATHER this stuff on, and it tends to keep the eczema at bay.

Good luck!

K.

---

Karen Walrond is a writer and photographer in Houston, Texas.
Dream Cream from Lush

I've had eczema issues for as long as I can remember. Plus during the winter I have just general dry skin (we have forced air heating). I mentioned it in a blog post a few years ago and HeatherB recommended I try Lush's Dream Cream. Love. It. It won't do anything for a bad flare up but I find it helps prevent minor ones from getting out of hand without turning to prescription stuff.

Jojoba can help too. I get breakouts on my scalp sometimes (OMG HORRIBLE) and I find that washing my hair only a few times a week with shampoo that contains jojoba and blow drying it rather than air drying helps.

Sigh, calendula. The Body Shop used to make a soy and calendula cream that I found really helpful not for dry skin but for those days I accidentally got too much sun.

Sassymonkey and Sassymonkey Reads.

Oh yeah, add smoking to the list

I quit 8 years ago (whoo!) but I did smoke on and off for many years before that.

I will however say that even back then when I had "great skin" I did see improvement after I quit. So you can only get better!

And man, I miss getting carded. I had a good run untila bout 36 but now I guess they figure I actually do look older than the Olsen twins.

Mom-101

Cool Mom Picks.com

It's true! I'm 32, smoke

It's true! I'm 32, smoke (I have a quit date set), use soap & water and a decent but not expensive moisturiser and pass for under 25. On a good day I still get id'ed buying alcohol. My mum has great skin, I think it's due to some Jewish heritage further back - great elasticity, natural oil's (I get the odd break out still too) and no real sun aging.

It's really nice to be able to say 'I have great skin!' and value it. So thanks for sharing :)

vitamin D and rosacea

Hi,

After realizing that my rosacea got a bit better in the summer (when vitamin D is generated more in the skin) and knowing that vitamin D is beneficial for skin healing, I began taking 1000 IU of vitamin D per day. After just a few days my inflammation was almost 100 percent reduced and the pustules were gone. This is after a year of taking metrogel with only slight improvement.

I suggest everyone should look into taking vitamin d supplements and discuss this possiblity with you dermatologist.

Here are a few I can't live without and where to buy:

I found a lip plumper that I really really like. It's by APOTEK and I like that it's a total lip conditioner as well as plumper. You can use it by itself, as a primer before lipstick or gloss, or even over your lipstick or gloss. It's not too sting-y, it smells yummy but not too sweet, and it's not gunky at all. Plus it comes in a tube with a wand, so you don't get your finger all gummy. Go to Apotek Total Lip Treatment to purchase. If you do decide to purchase, you can click and paste this coupon code right here: 15PNWS01--save $15 on a $50 order. They have lots of cool stuff at this site (askderm.com).

Vivite' Skin Care by Allergan: in a word, AMAZING. I actually got this at my neurologist's office of all places! Since I started using this regimen (not complicated, really) my skin is clear and it glows. It's really kind of freaking me out actually. I'm actually going out without wearing concealer or foundation, which I haven't done since, gosh, I was like my 9 yr old daughter Anya's age. Not you know, out OUT, but like to Starbuck's and stuff.

Anyway, it's loaded with glycolic acid, salicylic acid, anti-oxidants, and a bunch of natural ingredients like green tea, aloe, chamomile, olive leaf extract, chamomile, pomegranate, caffeine, etc. Check out their website at http://www.viviteskincare.com/. I use the exfoliating cleanser, exfoliating scrub, serum, and I'm just now trying their Vibrance therapy for fading spots. I received a free trial regimen from my doc: it included an eye cream and night cream which I still use; however, I purchased the full sized products from http://www.livelyskin.com/ at a discounted price with two-day shipping. However, if you want to learn more before buying, go to and click on AskDerm.com and type in Vivite and the experts (aka live people, imagine that!) there will talk with you first about all the details about how it works.

Revale' Night Cream with CoffeeBerry Extract: This anti-aging treatment contains the most potent concentration of the super-antioxidant CoffeeBerry at 1.5 percent. This formulation contains other natural antioxidants as well to enhance skin restoration and protect the skin from free radicals and was named one of Allure's top products the past 2 years running. All I know is it helps my fine lines. Go to Night Cream from Revaleskin and order it. Fast. It's soft and creamy and totally non-irritating. You need this cream.

Ziana (Topical Vitamin A): (Rx only) or Renova or Retina-A, etc.: if you aren't using these products, you are either crazy or a woman of childbearing age (or one and the same? Couldn't resist that joke, sorry). These are one of the greatest discoveries in skincare in the past 20 years, simply because they work. I've found Ziana to be the least peely, for me. And I exfoliate, a lot. A lot a lot. Ask your derm to write it for acne and it will be totally covered by insurance.

B. Kamins Chemist Sunbar Sunscreen SPF 30: This is the one sunscreen for your face and body that has it all. Check this out: It's oil free, fragrance free, paba free, non-greasy, water resistant, has an antioxidant formula, may be reapplied over makeup, broad spectrum protection UVA/UVB, for face and body. Has a nice nude color that dissolves quickly and easily. Safe for babies over 6 months of age. Their products are all "maple" based. Whatever that means. I just like it. Go to B.Kamins for that.

Hope you enjoy these products as much as I do...they are all fab and I freak if I run out of any of them!

Rachel Thompson

I'm an Indian woman and I've seen so many matrimonial ads that refer to color that I've become immune to them- I don't even bat an eyelid- same goes for the ads on TV. It's sad, really. There's too much hypocrisy in this country and this love for the 'fair' color is just another example. I've written a sarcastically funny post on the same topic- do check it out!
