I am with you on that note. I had all six of my grandkids last weekend in a mini van with 3 car seats and one booster and struggled all w/e getting them buckled and unbuckled - Forget having long nails if you have small kids!

Car Seats made simple

I remember well the car seat days. I am ashamed to say we had a small truck in the early days with bucket seats and a king cab- but no back seat. My husband built some floor mounted brackets we used to hold the car seat. Thank goodness we never had an accident, as we were clearly young and foolish!

As I look forward to being "grandma" someday soon, I can't help but remember how moving that carseat from one vehilce to another was. And who could afford a second seat for each child?

I wish car makers would come up with some acceptable and safe alternative to make keeping our children safe more affordable! And parent proof!
Beth

I run my own personalized gifts store by day, but enjoy blogging when time permits!

PediatricSafety

Hi Catherine - thanks for the great tips on toddler proofing a home! Definitely great info for parents (especially our audience). Speaking of which - you asked for anyone who's blogged about child safety to leave a link. Our whole blog is actually about child safety, so I thought if it's ok, I'd leave you a quick description since the site's still pretty new.

Pediatric Safety ( http://pediatricsafety.net ) is a community site for parents & caregivers to find information and share ideas so that they can protect the health & safety of kids. There are news stories and guest blogs by parents and experts; we have chat rooms for members to help each other and ask questions of our team of advisors (...pediatrician, nurses, EMS safety expert, environmental lawyer, etc.); and there's even a place where parents & caregivers who've invented new child health or safety innovations can have a place to share them. Basically its a community for everyone who cares about the health and safety of kids.

Hopefully this is the kind of information that you were looking for...and thanks again for the terrific post!

One of my biggest fears

Taking a long car trip with my little ones is one of my biggest fears. Mostly because when my daughter was a baby and young toddler she screamed all the time in the car. She wouldn't even sleep, and I still carry that trauma to this day. Which is a shame, because there are a lot of places I would like to go which are just about the right distance to be reached via a long drive.

These are great tips you've given here, I'm feeling inspired. Maybe this summer I'll work up the courage to give a car trip a try. ;-)

Great ideas!

We travel a lot with our two kids, both under 5. I have found that pulling out a new toy every so often REALLY works. In addition, we go out to the dollar store or Target and pick up a few new toys or items, cheap things like a dollar coloring book, some markers, etc, and hand them out in between older toys. We did this on flights when we lived cross country from family.

We also stop at a play area for lunch if we are taking an all day trip. The kids get out and run around, we eat and relax for a while, then pile back in for the afternoon - the youngest sleeps during this time, and I usually give the oldest a special treat, like a lollipop, that she doesn't usually get at home.

Thanks for the post!

Perfect,! Ruffle away.

Valuable observations.
Where is our *intent* in life and how do we deal with the resonsibility of what we are creating here.

Great questions you are briging up and the internet is such a fertile ground to really observe what we are doing.

Intent is something I am questioning lately.
I do agree, with what intent do I Twitter, am I just a sheep following the sheep because someone says it is what you do?

Am I blogging for attention and if 'yes' what and whose attention am I inviting?
Can I handle all that intention.

Why would I want to rake up my past via facebook or whatever. Do I have an intention to give those people the time and attention now I have contacted them or looked them up?

I so agree that ignoring your direct community for old friends or new friends on the internet could take us away from a very valuable recource right under our nose.

What do we intent when we enter internet?

I think you ruffle is perfect.

What did you swallow?

Thanks for the feature!

As the mom of aforementioned Mookie, who decided to become a slot machine for a day, I was so thankful that his breathing was not impeded when he made his esophagus a change purse.

However, I was horrified when I recounted the story to my friends, some suggested that I should have given him a PIECE OF BREAD?? WHAT? Ok, he's got METAL stuck in this throat so I'm going to give him something else gooey and clumpable to pack right on top of it??? Not on your life.

Sometimes it's scary what people will do. I'm like get thee to the doctor or the emergency room. And know the Heimleich manuever (sp?) for children.

PS Mookie has also put a crayon tip up his nose as well as a bead for a pillow. (the pillows were immediately given to my mother so he can shove the bead up his nose while at HER house. Also, he's smart enough to not shove it up both nostrils, but not smart enough not to do it at all.) Why? I don't know. We will never know the mind of Mookie.

I agree Rita, the best defense is a good offense. All small objects
are present and accounted for in this house. My daughter shoved a jewel up her nose and the doctor's exam convinced me there was nothing there. But five days later it she presented me one snot-encrusted jewel.
It worries me that her breathing could have obstructed during sleep and
while I did treat the incident with humour on my blog - OMG the
alternative could have been horrible.

Expandable Water Crystals

I bought these cool expandable water crystals that grow from itty bitty dust to cool marbles of slime. They are for watering plants. I thought it would be cool to let the kids watch them grow and play with them like homemade slime.

I asked if they were nontoxic.

Yesterday I put about 10 -15 in a little bowl of water and turned my head long enough for my 2 year old to gulp down around 5 of them. I'm guessing, not counting.

Only THEN did it occur to me that those crystals would expand in his stomach until they were who knows how big.

Poison Control says "this too shall pass." But, he did throw up a little red goo this morning. Hope the Mother's Day Out Teacher doesn't freak at what's in his morning diaper.
