Is It Over Yet?

Sitting here thinking about this "battle" in the country between the Democrats and the Republicans it suddenly occurred to me that in a big way it doesn't matter who will win in November, because there is such a huge loss already. A loss of the very desire to help each other that I thought was the core American value (and not killing for America--can I say that without being called unpatriotic?). And we can see this by the fact that this is such a close race. If 30% of the population can still support bush, then, well, there's a huge problem.

If so many people can think that a 72-year-old man who is known for his nasty temper and arrogance (the two go hand-in-hand) should become president just because he does what he wants in spite of what other people say (maverick shmaverick, arrogance I say), then that is a sad state of affairs. And if being shot down on your mission and being a POW gives you the right to think you know more than anyone else about security, then I think that going through security at the airport gives me the right to decide on airport security policy. Really!

And if anyone could possibly think that a woman who ccs her husband on official business, who was a member of a secessionist party, who puts herself before her children to such a degree, who lies and fibs and flip flops, and who thinks that 6,000 people should get $27 million dollars of earmarks, and who thinks that the death penalty is good but abortion is bad, could actually represent the rest of us who abhor those opinions, well, then we are in a sorry state.

I am, honestly, scared. These guys could really pull the bearskin rug from under our feet with glee.

I haven't been able to watch

I haven't been able to watch it either - its just too upsetting. I'm sure it will anger some people - but really the republicans and religious right are f***ing up the country. And I'm scared, really scared. There is so much at stake in this elecion and McCain chooses a VP that isn't even close to being qualified.

my last post:

I'm Grateful for my New Support Group

Hi. My name is Tracy, and I am a Democrat. Thanks All for making me laugh and feel like I'm not the only one who gets that this is The Emperor's New Clothes. I thoroughly enjoyed all the comments, and I am sure I will be back to vent again tonight after I watch our girl give her acceptance speech. I think Ben and Jerry might need to add some support tonight as well.

I actually made it through

I actually made it through pretty much the entire night, while "live blogging" with one of my fellow Evil Sluts over IM. And I only went for the mute button a couple of times.

I have to ask - was Lieberman's speech actually about anything? It seemed like he just kept saying 'country is more important than party', 'it's more important to be an American than a Democrat', 'we all need to come together', 'did I mention that country is more important than party?'. After awhile it was like okay, we got it, you can move on now. And I do have to admit that I got a good laugh out of his speech into the cameras to the Democrats and independents watching at home. Sorry Joe, not buying what you're selling. But I did listen!

And what exactly was up with Fred Thompson's assertion that the fact that John McCain had more than 300 demerits in the naval academy and once dated an "exotic dancer" somehow gave him the necessary rebellious spirit to survive being tortured in Vietnam? That didn't make a whole lot of sense.

The channel I was watching

The channel I was watching (either CNN or MSNBC, can't remember which it was right at that moment) also caught a guy letting out a huge yawn at the end of Laura Bush's speech. Oops.

And according to one of the writers from jezebel.com who is attending both conventions, the Republicans were also getting up and leaving during the ending prayer.

I forced myself to watch - actually i was playing solitaire on my laptop the whole time, which is how I got through it - I just wanted to check out how the other side was going to attack. but I gotta say - my gag reflex was going nonstop. Thank God for Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow or I might have ruined my laptop. And Lieberman! - what a whiny twit of a suck-ass! I didn't like him in 2000 and he grew less on me ever since. I'm glad to encounter voices of sanity here too. Thanks Ladies!

I'm confused

The thing that I can't figure out is why this woman decided to run for VP with a special-needs baby AND a pregnant teenager. That should be enough to make ANY parent (man or woman) cut back on responsibilities.

The mom in me would be very protective of my daughter if she got pregnant at 17. I don't understand how anyone could push her daughter into the national spotlight as a living testimonial to her pro-life politics. Of course, I also would not have boarded a plane when in premature labor with a special-needs baby.

Just last week, there were conservative women on a Yahoo group crucifying Michelle Obama for a lack of family values since she's a working mom.

This is so confusing!

Deborah

Oh, I don't know. George Bush Senior looking at his watch while Laura Bush was speaking made me laugh. (We had to rewind it and watch it again.)

And all of the empty seats were a bit sad. And people getting up and leaving while Thompson was talking about McCain's biography. That was a bit disrespectful.

Oh, My. God. HOW can this jerk sleep at night???? He was just talking about McCain/Palin being the REAL ticket of change in Washington. WTF???? And I am soooooo sick of people -- conservatives -- telling me that if I was a serious feminist (as opposed to a liberal feminist) that I would be considering McCain/Palin. Because, you know, all of us uterus-owning types are automatically in lock-step agreement. Never mind that I am a pro-choice, pro-drug legalization, anti-war libertarian who is VERY big into personal responsibility for aforementioned choices of all kinds, including any consequences that come with them. Dear God in heaven, please don't let them win!

I think I'm going to be sick! Seriously, Thompson talking about draining the swamp in washington. Who does he think is in washington in power? Let's see Alberto Gonzalez, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney.

And talking about the establishment in washington? are these people for real? what is going on here? Do they have Alzheimers? Have they forgotten already who left our economy in shambles? Who started the war? How much we're paying for gas?

If I did write about politics more often

I would probably get very angry and fired. I think that sometimes people say and write blatantly ignorant things because they are unsure of the issues and all through the primary season I spent a good amount of time biting my tongue because of the things that people would say without thinking. So no, I cannot write about politics all of the time because I would just get annoyed and frustrated which isn't good for me or anyone. But I have written about it once before on BlogHer and maybe again before the election is over. Who knows. But thank you all for the lovely comments. As Denise knows this post took a lot out of me though in the end, I'm glad I did it.

Great post, Heather. Perhaps, you should write about politics more often .

I was so disappointed that Hillary did not get the nomination. *sigh* I used to be a Republican and did not like her in the least, but she (and the Democrats) had won me over in recent years.
