Great article!

Excellent intro to natural cosmetics for newbies, Liz! Lots of great info.

I have hardly any "conventional" makeup/beauty items. I use Pangea Organics and John Masters Organics for face creams, cleansers and toners; Gabriel for foundation and concealer (free of synthetic ingredients); Alima Pure mineral makeup for blushes, eyeshadows and powder eyeliners and Jane Iredale for lipglosses. I have to admit I haven't found a natural macara I like yet, so I still use conventional ones, and I have a weakness for lipgloss so I do own a couple that aren't natural nor organic, namely Lancome Juicy Tubes and Bare Escentuals Buxom Lips.

I firmly believe thatthe amount of synthetic ingredients in the products we put on our skin influences us just as much as the ones we consume in food, drinks, etc - so I think healthy eating is not enough, "health" is a lifestyle thing, everything should fall in. Any effort in that direction is better than none at all, IMO.

Spray On Tan Tips, I haz them

Exfoliate the crap out of yourself beforehand.

MOISTURIZE before hand. That orangey look comes from too much stuff seeping into dry skin.

SHAVE beforehand.

And - well, if it was me and I was going to be in a wedding, I would exfoliate and stuff after the tan and before the wedding to help even everything out a bit. It's going to lessen the color a little, but I think it's also a little more natural looking afterwards. And sluffs off some of the color that you might otherwise sweat off. :-)

Not surprised at all

Thanks so much for that fact Ron. I've done some consulting for an organic skin care company and discovered that indeed, there's a perception that something "natural" might not perform as well. It's funny that somehow chemical = effective, especially with so many amazing brands out there (some of which have been around for decades, as a testament to their efficacy) that do offer all-natural formulations.

I look forward to spending some time on your site.

Natural, organic and eco-friendly does not mean better

Hi Liz,

This subject has come up quite a bit on my website, BeautyStat.com. We have surveyed hundreds of women and they have told us that although they like the fact that products are now offered in natural or organic varieties, first and foremost they want their beauty products to perform.

However if their favorite product was offered in a natural, organic or eco-friendly formula, they would be willing to pay slightly more for it.

Thanks for posting this article.

Hey Vered! I have heard SO much about Laura Mercier and now that you've mentioned her I am just going to have to bite the bullet and get some. Thanks for adding the link.

(The bonus here? I've seen your lips before so I can already imagine how great it's gonna look!)

Found it!

It was the Seaweed Cleansing Lotion (it's basically a toner) and it smells so delicious that I feel extra scrubbed clean when I use it. But I'm out right now so I have to order more.

Here's the link for that if you're interested. Happy shopping!

I love Mario Badescu's stuff, too! There's another product for getting rid of oil on your skin that smells fresh and I can't remember the name of it. I'll have to look it up if you're interested. SO yummy fresh.

Thanks for your picks! Great list.

5 Things I Love

Here are some of my faves:

Cuccio Naturale Butter Blend - Since it isn't water-based, moisturizes feet, hands and body nicely.

Denman Paddle Brush - gets rids of tangles while being gentle on hair.

Aquaphor Ointment, by Eucerin - better than Vaseline for ashy elbows and knees.

Co-signing on Burt's Bees Lip Balm. LOVE IT!!!

Mario Badescu Buffering Lotion - for those big, red, nasty, blistery cystic acne pimples. Heals and fades. My newest aqusition.

Lipstick!

I refuse to leave the house without it, and since it's so easy to carry - plus the creamy lipsticks are not liquids so no worries there - I always carry several tubes with me, in different colors.

You know when people ask you "what's the one makeup item you just can't live without" - for me, that's lipstick. :)

My name is Beth Engel. I've been running my own online business, Epic Merchandise, where I sell personalized, engraved gifts, since 2003.

I frankly did not understand this was a condition at all until I did some research and understood that some of my own anxiety and stress comes from worrying about how others view me. That has inspired me to do a lot more reading on the topic, which in my case helps me understand whats going on. And you know what they say, understanding the problem is the first step on the road to recovery. Hang in there! You are not alone by any stretch.

Love Foundation Brushes!

I just discovered the joys of a foundation brush about a year and a half ago - before then I used disposable sponges (and wasted so much expensive product!) I even got my non-makeup wearing sister-in-law hooked! I recently got the Sephora Platinum collection brush and really like it, but I'm going to have to try this tip out! I also agree with washing every (or at least every other) day, I find if I skip too many days the foundation gets streaky.
