Kudos to you for listening to your gut when your cat was stuck in part of your house. It's great you have such a connection with them!

This doesn't work every

This doesn't work every time, but a couple of times I got a feeling my cat was stuck in a part of the house and I was able to fish her out (she didn't call out so wasn't in great distress yet, but I got an urgent sort of feeling). Similarly, I often get a sense about where my cats are when they are out roaming (general location, distance) and they in turn seem to know exactly where I am in choosing which window to appear at when they want to be let in.

Fireworks in the city

I grew up in a city (Brooklyn, NY), and fireworks were illegal, but that didn't mean they were hard to come by! When I think about how my family - and the whole neighborhood - celebrated the 4th, I'm amazed that we never had an injury and never accidently burned anyone's house down! I have very fond memories of those times, but I will definitely NOT be repeating those traditions myself.

I wrote about the whole crazy scene on my blog today:

http://inventingmylife.blogspot.com/2008/07/times-have-changedthoughts-of-family-on.html

I also posted it here on BlogHer.

"I'd never have called my blog a 'pet' blog"

I'm with you. The puppy I got two months ago after years of pining has found her way onto my blog more than any other subject matter in my life. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who has trouble pinning down my writing as a "Pet Blog." I'm eager to check out the directory and find other bloggers who are as obsessed with their pets as I am with mine.

I think people just think it won't happen to them or their pet. It can and it might, and I really don't see the point anyway. Most dogs I've ever seen who are left in cars, regardless of temperature, are miserable (I'm sure there are exceptions, dogs who enjoy it, but I'd rather err on the side of caution, like I said.)

Similar deal with dogs who are left outside for way too long in really hot weather. THEY HAVE FUR. It makes them naturally warmer than a creature without such an accessory.

I get a little overwrought about the topic, myself, but it's important to keep an eye out for creatures that can't help themselves.

It still amazes me the number of people who still leave their dog in the vehicle with their windows only cracked open. I wouldn't even sit in my car with the windows wide open while parked on a black asphalt lot in the blazing sun.

This is an incredibly informative post about caring for pets but it's really unfortunated that pet owners still need to be educated about this. Now if we can only get the ones who should be to read this. :)

summer safety tips for pets

I too had not been looking out for impacts of heat and humidity to my pets up until I chanced upon this blog. I got scared at the fatality of leaving pets inside cars even in just few minutes! thank goodness that I havent had any episodes yet of leaving them alone inside a parked car but I wasnt fully aware of the danger it may pose to them.

Thanks Laure for this informative post!

Glitter Dog = Happy Father's Day

Hah. Glitter is bad, very bad. We tended to have glitter on cats rather than the dog - for some reason most of the dogs we've lived with have steered clear of glitter.

Happy Father's Day, to all of you - and yes those supplements are BAD.

shortage of vets and Disaboom

I had no idea that there was a shortage of Veterinarians. I wonder why.

And, we are huge Disaboom fans around here. I love that site.

I just got back recently

I just got back recently from interviewing a deaf veterinarian in Hickory Hills, a suburb southwest of Chicago. He tells me it's getting harder and harder to find vets available-- there is a shortage.

About Crohn's, TW might be interested in this:

http://www.disaboom.com/Blogs/deafmom/archive/2008/06/04/life-with-crohn-s-disease.aspx

Vet finder

I moved several times with my dogs and find that the holistic vet finder at http://www.ahvma.org/ is very helpful. You can also find avian practices.

And scope out an emergency vet anywhere you are headed with pets. I learned this lesson in a very hard and painful way when my dog Zoe passed away while we were across the country. I found a place in a phone book and afterwards a client told me that there was another place that would have been recommended which I might have learned had I done homework before traveling.

On the doctor front I generally ask co-workers for recommendations but I haven't found any better, more efficient solutions. It sounds like your new landlords and neighbors are a great resource, though.

Some names

So when I moved to Chicago, I just did a lot of searches and poured over reviews. Of course, sometimes the only folks who write reviews are disgruntled customers.

Oh well, here is a review of animal hospitals. And here. You may have already looked these up, but I was looking to see if any names looked familiar, so I linked the reviews anyway.

Also - we had great luck with the magazine the chamber of commerce for our neighborhood publishes. It had all of the businesses and doctors, etc. in our small area and was extremely helpful. I'd recommend giving them a call or looking up their site, too.

Good luck!

And yes, the "fake cat" is a drama queen and scared the pants off me. Luckily nothing was really wrong but next time she's not getting medicated for a move but I might.

We were really lucky that we knew people in the city who have pets and could refer us to clinics, etc. Finding a good vet can be hard.
