I rarely wear a shirt that says anything, but I would love to have these shirts available on Zazzle or a similar site for use with my own designs. Think we can convince them to branch out beyond the oneliners?

Found other great bamboo clothes on Etsy, great to see more indie designers picking up the bamboo ball!

love the local

Hello!

That's funny -- my son wanted to be held all the time, too! And he refused to sleep alone. Now he's a very independent, though still cuddly, four-year-old. It gets easier.

I love eating locally and post recipes on my blog, What I Made for Dinner (ack link function isn't working on my laptop, so http://whatimadefordinner.blogspot.com). I just went to a strawberry luncheon featuring grilled lamb with a strawberry sauce! Kind of a complex dish for a family with a newborn, though.

If I were you, I'd start out simple: snack on the local strawberries, which you can probably wash one-handed ;) Have one of those free-range eggs poached for breakfast with whole-grain bread from your local bakery.

If you have a little more time to cook, or if you can get someone else to cook for you, asparagus buckwheat crepes are pretty good.

Sautee mushrooms and chopped asparagus with garlic in olive oil, thyme, salt, and a leetle red wine. Set aside.

Combine 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup buttermilk, 2 eggs, 1/4 cup buckwheat flour, 1/3 whole wheat flour, 1/4 t salt, 1 1/2 T melted butter. Let batter sit at least 1/2 hour.

Ladle batter into hot, buttered pan, making sure it spreads to all sides. Cook, then flip. Add some of the asparagus mixture to the center, top with grated local cheese, fold over crepe, and enjoy!

Crepes take a little practice, so make sure everyone is in a good mood, first.

Carbon Footprint of a Cheeseburger

I try hard not to be as publicly hateful of McDonalds as I actualy feel in private. But I don't usually manage that..... It's not really food, in my mind, and I think that we are raising generatons of children to believe that anything they put in their mouth is food, without ever teaching them about nutrition or connection to the natural world. Yaddi yaddi yaddi, i could go on forever.

But what really put me over the edge was taking a stark look at the carbon footprint of a cheeseburger. Beyond what we're doing to our bodies, I think we need to stop and look at what we're doing to our planet....

So I blogged about it, and included this great video from National Geographic that walks through the whole process from raising cows to making the wrappers to keeping them warm in the little toastie ovens.

Not good. (But, um, on a road trip, nothing goes down quite as well as a whopper with everything.)

-- aka the Dane County Farmers Market, yes? -- actually was one of the few NON California/NY markets that gets media attention. I some times drive through Madison, I need to time my trip for a Saturday.

Workers rights should be considered when buying food. Labels such as fair trade are important and we should all be concerned with the issue. Other worker rights issues include the penny-a-pound increase for tomato workers that Burger King blocked (when other fast food giants were onboard), meat-packing plant injuries, and too many more.

Madison WI

Madison's farmers market is awesome, rated top in the nation, the market goes all around the capital square. I try to make it once or twice a year. July 12-13 it is moved for Art Fair On The Square- if you live near Madison it is well worth the day trip!

Down the street from me is a nice little farmers market, about 20 tents. That is were I go weekly. I know most of the farmers and I get better deals.

Cleveland's West Side Market

I grew up knowing and visiting Cleveland's West Side Market, which is a special kind of farmer's market. The booths are permanent locations, sites handed down from parent to child specializing in particular foods. The building housing the market is a historic landmark.

While I adore having a local farmer's market, I sure miss the bustle and variety (and reasonable prices) I could find there.

Farmer's Markets

I had planned to actually visit a farmer's market tomorrow. It's actually a huge grocery story with international foods, calling itself a farmer's market. I do believe that the fruits, veggies, and other food are good! When I was young, my mother used to take me to U-Pick 'em farms to pick beans and stuff. Well, I just watched. There are still some organic farmers out there who allow people to pick berries and stuff on farms. I will be picking blackberries in July. Haven't done that in a long, long, time!

In the past I've been a plain Jane t-shirt kinda girl myself, but more recently I've reviewed some eco-conscious printed tees (including the Tees for Change "Choose Happiness" shirt) and they are growing on me. I like the idea of spreading a positive message.

Why I won't buy them

I think they are a great idea and I will actually try to get the company into the weekly newsletter I edit each week for a company I work for. We like to highlight a different green vendor each week.

Two reasons why I won't buy them:

(1) I know it's a good cause, I but I have a hard time paying $32 for a t-shirt

(2) I don't tend to wear shirts with words across the front (or pants with words on the butt).

I do like the "today matters" and "seek balance" shirts. But those are things that for now, I will just say as affirmations or give as suggestions.

Maybe if it was on a messenger bag I'd be more likely to buy it....

Plain Jane

I tend to like my tees, like I like my burgers: plain. The eco friendly tees are a little too preachy for me. If I do sport a slogan on my tee, it's something basic. The colors are great however. I found a great website that features organic kids clothes: http://kee-ka.com/Merchant2/sfnt.html Keep blogging!

The Farmer and I were just

The Farmer and I were just discussing the fact that when we were kids NO ONE had a second car. Of course that meant my mom and her contemporaries were stranded at home all day long. Shopping trips were always pre-planned - on Friday night because Friday was paycheck day. There were also alot of in home deliveries at that time (the 1950's). We had a bread man and a milk man. There was no need for soccer mom cares because there were no organized sports. It was great! Our sports consisted of a ball and bat and an empty field.

Imagine my surprise when we moved to a place were there was a huge open field next to our home. It stood empty for years. I couldn't believe it. Back in the day that field would have been confiscated by neighborhood kids, and the path between the baselines would have been worn bare within a week.
