Hi Holly, great question! I have been an entrepreneur and self-employed since 1999! So some tips on LinkedIn:
1 - make sure it is CLEAR that you are a business owner- to many self-employed consultants put their contracts as separate employment that hurts not helps.
2 - The summary section needs to be key-word rich - that is how LinkedIn's powerful search engine helps people finds what they are looking for. It is critical that in that section your message (what you want to write and publish about) and expertise are extremely clear. Publishers aren't into unclear purpose!
3 - Publishers are people too and networking works. I did not pitch them, I build relationship with them.

It is different, we bring or can bring our audience to them so there is a different power exchange operating here.

We don't have to be pennies on the dollar writers. We can learn from what was done to traditional writers and side step that level of disrespect.

...but don't be a hamster on someone else's wheel. Blogging can be addictive.

Getting paid to blog, doubly so. But not necessarily lucrative. There are better, easier ways to make a living as a writer.
