Christmas in July

There’s that infamous title, “Christmas in July”. That may be a great
marketing gimmick to use this July, market how tough the shopping
season will be and have some killer deals on items now. Maybe the
shoppers will use the items for birthday gifts instead of the next few
months with the tight economy, and buy more this winter from you anyway!

And could not believe they had their Christmas ornaments out already. We went to Costco and while they didn't have Christmas ornaments out they had snowsuits.

Me? I'm going to go back to hiding under my rock.

I have no idea why, but it did. Firemom's super organization isn't making me feel better either. I want to grow up to be Firemom, she sounds so NOT stressed. :-)

It doesn't matter to me whether they're obvious about it or not. I finished my kids' Christmas lists in June and started purchasing immediately. I just recently decided what to buy for my friends. Still a bit clueless for my husband and our parents but I'm working on it.

I started earlier than my late-August/Septemeber date of years past. Why? While we're not struggling horribly, I don't want to get close to their November birthdays and Christmas and realize, "Crap! We're out of money." My lists also keep me from buying extra and over-spending. Plus, I just found a friend to give me/us the charger for the Leapster 2 I just bought as her child outgrew her Leapster. Bonus points for scoring accessories for free. ;)

I think it spans all industries

I'm in human resources and a recruiter tried this tactic on me for an HR job. I mean, come on! We both work in "the industry" and she still fed me the lines? Crazytown! I wrote about the experience here.

oh, this made me laugh!

I have HAD this conversation! Followed by several other frustrating conversations with the same guy. He had my CV already, but wouldn't give me the details of the job, other than to say they needed my sort of experience. Couldn't tell me the employer, the sort of systems I'd be expected to work on, or what my role would be (tech support? database administration? data analysis? app customisation? it was THAT BROAD)

this is what happens when recruiters try to recruit technical staff without any understanding of the technology.

I laughed, said I couldn't consider changing jobs for less than $x. He kept calling back, with precious little detail, but a higher number each time. eventually the number was high enough that i went to talk to the people. and at that point, all became clear. But that recruiter was the most frustrating adult i've ever had to deal with.

Networking can be Hard

Hi Vered - thanks for your comments!

Trisha - indeed I can understand.Being shy can put an added challenge in there. My colleague John did a nice series on Networking for Introverts

http://www.queercents.com/2007/09/26/networking-and-self-marketing-meet-...

Make sure you reward yourself each time you step out of your comfort zone. Little by little with small steps you'll create a "new normal" where it feels more natural for you. Remember to be yourself ... it's ok to be shy!

Networking has always been hard for me - even online, because I am shy. I am trying to force myself to do it though.

Great networking tips

There's a big difference between a hard sell and networking. Networking comes naturally to some. Others may take years to realize that it's never just about talent or skills - you must build a network in order to advance. As you said, the best part is, that it is actually a fun, rewarding process.

Love the tips on how to handle large events. I'll remember those for BlogHerCon. :)

Both for the comments. :-)

I don't think our store has a mix-and-match option, but I may ask about that next time I'm there. Because mixing, say, one mustard and five tomato cans, etc would be so much more practical.

Just a note about 10 for 10

Our supermarket that does 10 for 10 lets you mix and match items throughout the store. So, you can get 1 each of 10 items or 3 of this and 2 of that and 5 of that.

These are lists I think many of us can benefit from making on a regular basis. But then I'm a list person so maybe it's just me.

Cultivate a good one - indeed. Yes indeed.

Thanks for writing this. It was a great way to finish my work day.
