Work

I have a suggestion for work: Pet/House sitting and companion sitting. I am unable to work a regular job so I do Pet Sitting mainly. I get between $35 and $50 a day when I do a job. Right now I am starting a Pet sitting job: 5 days at $50 a day equals $250. I will be taking my art supplies with me and spend the day drawing and pencil painting.

Some jobs are by the visit-go by the house and feed the critters. Some jobs are overnight, these jobs can be for 12 night, others for 2 weeks. Client pays for food. You can come and go if you want. Also I do some Companion sitting.

Just a thought.

Things you should know

Off the justices issue for a moment, two people with no economic experience combined with no legal experience makes for a pretty uncertain future. Winging it? That might be okay for a little start-up, but honestly, this is ridiculous. And if neither of them is able to read the fine print, or understand, as you say, the complexity of issues and the possible ramifications of all manner of legal decisions, then that does not bode well. And that means that they will be at the hands of their trusted advisors, and we see where that can lead a country.

Oddly enough, can sometimes be allies in issues like this. Much as his jurisprudence can be annoying you have to really respect his adherence to legal intepretation over politics.

I'm very nervous that a republican ticket without a single lawyer on it is anywhere near winning this crucial election. I don't believe that McCain or Palin are qualified to choose justices or understand the breadth and depth of what is at stake.

Amazing, the perspective that some justices can take and still call themselves "justices." I had always thought that government was to provide a safety net to us all, and not just protect those who already have from the possible rising of the have nots.

I guess some see the constitution the same way some see the Bible, as literal and not as a basis for how we should act. As an English teacher, I would write on their papers: "More analysis, don't just restate what is written. Try to understand the meaning." Could I get a stamp like that for some of those justices?

And tell your husband that we appreciate your effort and postings.

Trouble on both sides

DCSweetie (http://dcsweetie.blogspot.com/)

As someone of Generation Y also trying to manage a group of slightly younger Y-ers, I can see the issues on both sides...from the older crowd, a needless focus on "paper" "things you can hold" etc., while seeing things like online branding as extra. Also, this generation seems to believe that there is such a thing as brand loyalty...maybe there is but we're all also a lot more ADD than even 10 years ago.

That being said, Gen-Y employees often act as if by working 40 hours they are doing their manager a favor. I actually got called out by an employee because I asked him to work until 5! "I just feel like there are other things I could be doing!"

This topic needs to be discussed in college!

From the Horse's Mouth (a GenYer)

It's interesting to see the perspective about the phenomenon of Generation Y. Unfortunately, my peeps get such a bad rap, and in some instances, for good reason! I took a training about the comparisons among the three generations and found what a poor reputation Gen Yers carried in the workforce. Arrogance is the most used word to describe my generation, but perhaps we need to take a step back and break down the interaction between, say a Baby Boomer and a GenY. Many Baby Boomers would describe GenYs as questioning authority and having no experience to back up there "interrogations". Rather, there is much to be learned from all ages.

For many youngin's, we just got out of school, our professors pumped us full of information and how it is in the "real world". When we actually get in the "real world" our theories and petty school projects don't mean sh*t. In fact, there are many companies still living in the dark ages and were obviously not chosen for case studies in the Best Practices section of our textbooks. So, of course, there will be severe questioning and curiosity about why processes are not better streamlined and why management are making decisions by the seat of their pants rather than carefully analyzing the situations by a little thing called a Gap Analysis.

From my experience, I took a brand new job recently, and I had several questions about processes, management strategies, and management in general. This little student took a few MBA classes and thinks she knows it all...Yeah Right! So, back to my take-aways from my previous training on generations, I am fully aware I can come off as God's Gift, so I've decided to tweak my questioning approach. I firmly believe, others do not always have to adapt to my personality, rather it's a two-way street (Now if the rest of my GenYers could follow suit!) I form all my questions in the form of curiosity questions where the receiving party feels like they are teaching me something. This way, my "interrogation" is non-threatening and I still look like the Good Guy!

So, what praytell do GenYers want from their jobs? They want to GET AHEAD! Sure, there are people from all generations that want to get ahead, but in a general sense, GenYers are always looking for the shortcut to instant success. I want to know what the person ahead of me is doing, so I can learn from their successes and their mistakes. That's the reason for all the questions, and I'm sure that's how tomorrow, your boss will be 24 years old, ready to take over the company!

Is this a good thing or bad thing? I'm not sure, I guess the generation analysis will continue as more and more young people enter the workforce with their large ambitions.

Forgetting The bonus

Last night I had dinner with a twenty-something attorney who is in his first year at a very prestigious law firm in a major US City. He was sharing a conversation he had with a co-worker who was discussing billable hours. I asked my dinner companion what would happen if he didn't "hit" the right number of billable hours...he said " I won't get a bonus."

I asked, "Will that be a big deal?"

He said, " They pay me enough. I'd rather have my time."

is it really that tricky?

here's my list (from somebody who turns 30 soon):

- I don't have a stay-at-home-wife at home to do stuff. flexi-time is a must, so i can wait at home for the repairman when the fridge breaks, or wait for the delivery man.

- Give me a career path! I may be a technical worker, but if you don't give me some options for advancement, I will make my own by leaving. I get nervous if i'm doing the same role in the same organisation for more than 2 years. it shouldn't take me that long to learn it.

- More money for the same boring work will not make up for the last point. i will take a pay cut to skill up, or get a great new experience.

- i will ask for extended periods of leave (without pay), and it won't just be to have babies or recover from major illness. and i won't mind quitting if you won't give it to me.

-everything else is gravy.

It's hard, really hard. I know since I've been doing it for several years now. Now that I'm not working 5 jobs, I can see just how tired I was - how burnt out I was - and how little I have to show for 18 hour days/7 days a week/365 days a year.

That alarm clock thing....

Sounds like a pretty ok meeting about your performance and future.

Now about that alarm clock thing, I left my alarm clock in the office on Thursday so when it went off, I didn't hear it. This means I woke up 10 minutes late - no big deal, really - except it totally threw me off. I wasn't behind schedule or anything, it just felt like I was. I really hate that.
