Glad you took a shine to Stanley and I'm so sorry for your doggie loss. Thanks for stopping by!
Interesting!

My dog past away two years ago but there was no doubt in my mind that if anything happened to her that required mouth to snout I would be there. Pet safety and emergency medical is so important. Thanks for the post, loved the tortoise and the basic CPR instruction.

This is great! Is it the one from Jive Media? Seems like it is totally worth the $2.

~ClizBiz

BlogHer Contributing Editor, Animal Concerns, Proprietor, ClizBiz

iPhone app on animal first-aid

I downloaded an app for my iPhone where I can fill in all my pooches stats - in case of emergency and such, I've got all her normals/allergies/injuries/etc - plus, it has a plethora of various scenarios in which to help a pet. From CPR to spider bites, to burns and cuts/abrasions..just about any abnormal situation you can imagine, it tells you how to fix it. Some, like the CPR, even have videos you can watch.. it's only $1.99...but I would have gladly paid more since I know that I always have access to whatever may ail my beloved fur baby.

"Silence gives consent." The Innocent Primate Vegan Blog http://innocentprimate.wordpress.com innocent.primate@gmail.com

Benefit of the Doubt

Unfortunately, the survey doesn't elaborate on any explanations for why a pet owner would not perform CPR. To your point, I have a feeling the answers might be more complex than we think.

Truth is, nobody really knows what they would do in an emergency. There's usually so much adrenalin and craziness that the quietly-made plans often go out the window.

~ClizBiz

BlogHer Contributing Editor, Animal Concerns, Proprietor, ClizBiz

Maybe ...

The people who say they wouldn't do it are just afraid they don't know what to do and wouldn't want to cause any further harm? I'd rather believe that then think someone wouldn't do everything in there power to save their pet.

I'm sending this post to every pet owner I know!

Wow. Thank you. I've never even thought about what would happen if my kitties needed CPR, but I would give them both mouth-to-mouth in a second if their lives were at stake. What's wrong with the other 47% of cat owners???

Holy cow! I can't even imagine how scary that would be. Poor thing! So glad you and beau were there to help - what if the dog had been alone???

So glad your pup is okay. Hey, at least now you can say you've been 'trained.'

~ClizBiz

BlogHer Contributing Editor, Animal Concerns, Proprietor, ClizBiz

I had to perform the

I had to perform the heimlich once on my dog. It was easily the scariest moment of my life when I realized she had a piece of food lodged in her throat. When my normally nonchalant boyfriend started to freak out, it hit me how desperate the situation was. She was stumbling around, then fell to the ground, flopping. I think her dog instinct was telling her to hit herself to dislodge the food, but it looked like she was convulsing. Boyfriend smacked her on the back, then I did my best attempt at translating the hiemlich to a dog's chest. Happily, one of those 3 things worked and she hopped back up, just fine. We were both wrecks for the rest of the evening.

I guarantee I would do whatever I could, including mouth to mouth, to save that dog. I suspect an awful lot of those 37% would, too, if they were actually confronted with a dog in crisis (discounting the old or sick dog DNR scenarios).

Preaching to the Choir
