I've never made chili with beer, so I can't help you but it's an interesting ingredient. Just made chili in the crockpot last weekend with black beans.

I went to the store yesterday and bought ingrediants for chili. I'll be simmering mine in the crockpot. I've been looking for a new beer to add since the kind I usually use (Miller in the gold can) I can't find in a single can anymore. We don't drink it (I don't drinkbeer andmy husband is too much of a beer snob) but it adds great flavor. If anyone has another beer I'd love to hear a suggestion! Melanie @ MelADramatic Mommy

I agree, there are an endless number of variations of chili that are good. I used to cook just like that. Now that I'm trying to blog most of my recipes, I have to force myself to write down just what I'm putting in!

Chili improvisations

Thanks for finding these wonderful chili variations! I love to improvise with whatever is in the pantry and fridge. I've always got canned and dried beans on hand, and always some kind of tomato products, and from there, I just start adding bits and pieces of vegetables, maybe leftover cooked chicken, mole sauce, herbs... somehow, it always comes together. The only problem is that I can never make the same chili twice!

Glad you liked it. I actually love writing those Christmas letters. Love getting them from other people too, although it's kind of a lost practice any more.

I absolutely love ancho chile powder. (In fact, just realized I was out and ordered some from Penzeys over the weekend!) And the idea of using Greek yogurt instead of sour cream is a great one too. You should definitely blog that recipe!

Chili + Super Bowl!

I recently came up with a turkey black bean chili recipe that turned out to be one of the best things I've ever made. My "secret" ingredients were ancho chile powder, corn tortillas and greek yogurt topping. I posted a quick and dirty version here but I really need to give it a proper post.

I'll have to use the Super Bowl as an excuse to try it again plus some of these very tasty sounding versions from your round up. Thanks, Kalyn!

Would those five ingredients be black beans, beef, cilantro, lime and avocado? Me too! This recipe was from Fine Cooking, which is my very favorite cooking magazine. Totally a keeper! and I see I forgot the link for my own recipe (duh) so adding it now. Hope you like it!

Your favorite there at the end, that is. I'm slated to attend a chili cookoff on Super Bowl Sunday and that recipe is notable for including five ingredients in the title that I LOVE.

BTW, I thought of you yesterday when I saw a 2.5 quart crockpot on sale ($12.99) and almost bought it (even though I already have 8 crockpots!) I said to myself, "I bet the only person who has more crockpots than you do is Steph!"
