What Color is her Lipstick?

What most bothers me (alright, one of the things that bothers me) about Palin is that she is so comfortable attacking someone else, putting other people down, whether it's a specific person or a whole group of people. That narrow-mindedness is numbing.

Her latest peek into her understanding, that her first amendment right is being infringed upon because she is being criticized is perhaps the scariest thing that she has uttered. Basically, she really does mean my way or the highway. Was Bush so blunt on the campaign trail? Could you imagine this after Bush? It really is a slide into 1984 in the 21st century.

I have never understood how policiticans can keep putting down politics and government. Shouldn't they look for another line of work? I mean how hypocritical?

(Her color: would it be blood red?)

Not all Millenials

I have an 18 year old who came to feminism late (in my opinion) but at least she got there! Her tween and early teen years had her staunchly avoiding feminism and pretending it was no longer important or an issue she needed to deal with. It was "ancient history" - the fight was over, she liked her bra and guys who opened doors for her and then she'd beat them at whatever game they were going to play once they got inside (rightttt, whatever.) Thank goodness, she turned the corner and now she's a solid feminist. (Fingers crossed she stays that way.)

I have a 25 year old daughter - she started strong but has since weakened her feminist stance. The Millenial malaise has infected her. It's not her fight. Ho hum. There are more important issues (what those are, she's not very good at telling me.)

My son is 22 and he's always been a pretty solid feminist - except when it comes to abortion. He's pro choice "for other people" -- but he's also strongly libertarian -- (which means he's pretty ineffectual all around. Darn it.)

We've got one more... on the cusp - he'll be 15 this year. Pretty decent feminist, maybe - when you can get him to be enthusiastic about anything other than a day off from school and video games... (He's the kid who says PATRIARCHY most often.)

I consider myself a feminist

I'm a Millenial (barely -- I'll be 29 soon), but I consider myself a feminist. I've never thought of feminism as blindly supporting other women, but I admit I see, like those who have gone before me, that there is still a ways to go. I'm not afraid of the "F" word, even though in my family, my state and my religion, many people freak out about how I identify with feminism.

I think, though, that your assessment of Millenials in general is fairly spot-on.

As a Millennial myself, I couldn't agree more with this article. I didn't care that Hillary Clinton was a woman -- I just cared about the issues, and who she was as a candidate. My mom was all wrapped up in electing a female president, like we had to vote for her because we're women, or something. My mom is always hurt that I'm not more inspired by feminism, but it's hard for me to match her sense of feminist pride (probably because, to be totally honest, I've never really felt like being a woman has made my life harder, or made people treat me unfairly. If anything, it's seemed like an unfair advantage). Anyway, thanks for this article. I can't wait to discuss it with my mom, haha...

How about "woman"?

Or, "enlightened woman"?

I know, mother, wife, friend, sister, cousin. Yes, if we don't want the world dictated to us, we all need to embrace the unequivocal equality of the genders.

Laura,

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who isn't afraid to claim the label of "feminist." I hope that we can rescue the term from the conservatives but, I don't know, they've pretty much completely ruined the term "liberal." People have given up on it and started to use "progressive" instead. Sadly, I don't know of an alternate term for feminist that really works as well, do you?

Taking Words Back

I, too, am a very dirty girl. I always call myself a "feminist"; the meaning of that term has retained its positive aspects for me. Maybe we can get it back from the conservatives who have tried to demean it.

Running for Miss Congeniality

Maybe he really wants to be elected Miss Congeniality and that is why he picked Palin. If running for president and having thousands of people cheer you and send you money and give you free food and wave signs in your face about how they love you is not the ultimate Miss Congeniality contest, than I don't know what is.

Mr. McCain is a bully. Bullies think everyone else is inferior to them. I don't know if that is inherently sexist, but if the bully is a boy (and they generally are, regardless of mean girls), then they are by nature sexist as well.

Simplicity and Eco Go Hand-in-Hand

Diane MacEachern www.biggreenpurse.com Diane@biggreenpurse.com

A big part of the Big Green Purse message is about making time for things that matter (turns out, spending more time on tasks is a great way to avoid spending money, and that can be just as powerful as doling out cash for the eco-goods). In the end, what's the point of saving the planet if we don't have time to enjoy it? I intentionally move into the slow lane every Sunday. How? I don't turn my computer on. I don't turn the tv on either. I don't even make a phone call, though I'll answer my phone if it rings. Unplugging from the electronic world to focus on the natural world is essential if we're going to create a simpler world. Thankfully, we don't have time for everything. I try to focus on the important things. Yep, it's hard. But the payoff is great.

Pickled Jerusalem artichokes?!?

What you just described was my life up until I turned 30. It was a really good, easy to enjoy life as well. Except for the Jerusalem artichokes. They took over my garden and the only way to get rid of them was to sell the house.

I'm going to check out the grassfed gourmet cookbook. Thanks!

it ties right in to Dixie's ad campaign promoting the ease of paper plates for.. like... everything. Burbanmom's sister ranted about it on her blog:

http://www.verymerryseamstress.com/weblog/archives/2008/09/dixie_you_lose.html

It's so frustrating when companies use the language of feminism to justify destroying the planet.
