I also agree that having an alternative to serve would be wonderful. My daughter after graduating from Syracuse U. joined AmeriCorp for two years . It was great for her as she wasn't eligible for out of Country service due to asthma.

She went on to law school and is working toward being in the NGO field. It takes alot of time and experience but she will do this. She is now working in D.C. towards her goal.

I don't know if this addresses your desire for short-term opportunities, but one aspect of the Act would be to, as I wrote above, "Support short-term international service opportunities and strengthen the Volunteers for Prosperity program, which supports short-term international service opportunities."

Seems like the ideas of a U.S. Public Service Academy is one that resonates with a lot of people. As you say, amandalynne85, many people would like to serve their country, but are not able, or do not want to serve in the military.

I was very happy to hear Senator Clinton spoke about the U.S. Public Service Academy at Service Nation. Her unwavering support is vital to the movement and it is encouraging to know that she continues to use all outlets to voice her support. As a woman, what I love best about the Academy is that it offers individuals, especially women, an opportunity to serve their country in a way that military service does not. The military is not for everyone and the U.S. Public Service Academy would allow those individuals who either cannot or do not want to serve in the military an opportunity to serve this great nation of ours. I look forward to the re-introduction of the bill by Senator Clinton next year.

and think we should look at shorter term efforts as well.

The thought just struck as I started to say what a great idea this Act would be... but after getting it in my head, think there is a nice place for less than a year stints.

Loving Thy Neighbor in the the storm

My husband is just back from the coast, boarding up our home which is on the market there. Our precious across-the-street neighbors helped cut all the wood, helped install all the clips, helped get every window covered and get the property secured. With full hearts and tears in our eyes, we are so thankful for the experience of that Christian adage of neighborly-ness in action. There is no way we could have accomplished all that needed to be accomplished without their efforts. It speaks so strongly to the need for and the blessing of 'good neighbors', whether from across the street or across the country. We truly are one community. We rise or fall together.
