Cuba revisited

What is to be done about property confiscated from 4th generation inhabitants who were deported with $100 in their pocket. My employee's family was such. They supported the takeover by Castro because he had promised the exact opposite of what he did. The family were ancestors of missionaries and had established many of the natives by deeding them land that was in orange groves along with livestock when they had been employed long enough to demonstrate they knew how to farm. Instead, his regime took their farm, home and deported them and kept all they had worked for during the generations. I say we should just work through the back door until those 2 brothers finally kick off and see what Cuban patriot will stand up.

Open trade would break the

Open trade would break the cycle, it would have to come with a move to a market economy. It is so over due. That country could have a market economy in five years and growth in GDP that would be astounding.

In fact the process of change could be modeled to that of Chinas. The difference is that in Cuba it would reach saturation much faster.

Oh look it is already happening and your out of the influence game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuba-People's_Republic_of_China_relations

So much for starving them into submission, we have relation in China because intelligent people new that getting involved is better than not. You should never dictate change, it’s universally rude.

Communism is not without faults, there is something to be said for hybrid systems at least within this generation. Once you open the market you are outside of the defined model for communism, really hard to go back after that.

When you equate it to spending your vacation dollars there, that really speaks volumes about were you head is.

Exactly

And yes, we SHOULD have an embargo against China, North Sudan, etc., as well.

Having lived in South Florida, I met MANY Cuban refugees who gave me first-hand accounts of the brutal life they had in Cuba--forced IUD use or sterilization, work camps where children are sent to either work sugar fields or tobacco farms and sleep in hammocks outside. This is not summer camp--this is child labor. Unless, of course, your kids are from the Cuban wealthy elite and, like anywhere else in the world, are exampt from horrible treatment. Those are the people the world hears from, unfortunately.

Under the Same Logic...

"Why would I give my dollars via a vacation or trade to such a brutal, oppressive government?"

Then by that logic, we should have an embargo against China and should not trade with them or go spend our tourist dollars there.

I find it bizarre that in the name of the almighty dollar we are willing to trade with many brutal and oppressive governements worldwide, but the one we can't control just 90 miles south of us we will vilify even more. Huh... Maybe the real issue is that it chaps our hide that we can't control and form the Castro government as we would like, and that in fact, they enjoy flipping us the proverbial finger.

How about applying the same logic to China, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Belarus, etc etc etc?

Tomorrow, I absolutely have to do some of the writing that I actually get paid for. Then if I have any brain cells left I will try to tackle it tomorrow afternoon, if not then some time this weekend. Obama's plan is already laid out nicely in bullet points, so I need to pick it apart and make sure I look at it critically.

I would also love to do a side by side comparison of their plans for veterans, but I'll have to see what I have time to do.

I'll admit this is the first presidential election that I have paid more than a passing attention to, and I really appreciate the way you presented the information. Would you be willing to do the same for Obama's plan? Or have you already?

for sharing your stories.

I agree every country has its issues.

I do think natural disasters, and food contamination are a problem, but deliberate government negligence is much worse, as is much more often the case in China. It's more the rule than the exception. And deliberately adding poisonous chemicals to food--apparently widespread (pet food, toothpaste) as was done in China I think has no comparison here.

And I don't think we do the good people of China any favors by drawing an equivalence between our democracy and their country, where they don't get to choose their leaders (as we do, like them or not:)

And where bloggers like us could be put in jail very easily.

Plenty of contamination to go around

Spinach? Tomatoes? Salsa? I think there's plenty of contamination blame to go around here as well as China.

As for the "dying rooms," as a mother of a daughter adopted from China, can we let that one go already?? Most of the orphanages in China aren't like that and pretty much everyone has acknowledged that. China isn't evil. Most people in China aren't bad. They've got a bad government. So do we.

Sadly, the US is not immune from such things

although I agree the cover ups are certainly much worse in China.

Just this morning, I was reading Julie Pippert's concerns about the toxic wake of Ike, about which you hear next to nothing in our main stream media.

My own children's school terrifies me, a large section that is used for the arts program is constructed of unreinforced masonry. We do live in an earthquake zone and it's frustrating to see nothing done for want of a bond levy. Fortunately, we do still have a fairly open society and I can complain to the school board and get something done. (hopefully)

Our food inspection system has definite cracks, and we need to be vigilant and supportive of food regulation to prevent tragedies like the one playing out in China.

In this country, we might not have fear of a repressive government, but we definitely seem to have fear of offending large corporations, or asking the tax payer for more money. Either way, people suffer.

Watching China

I agree, they are one to watch. After being there to adopt our daughter, we were saddened by the people so firmly entreched in their belief -almost worship- of their government. But in secret they wanted to know about America...they had heard how we walk on streets of gold.
Interesting.

Precious people under an evil government.
