Am starting to have this problem

I'm 29 but I'd have to say that since I was 27 I started wanting to tone down my wardrobe since giving birth to my son (gave birth at 25). I had to go to our first pre-school "back to school" night at the Montessori school my son will be attending and I was lucky to find some toned down, yet trendy but still conservative enough wear from both Anthropologie and American Apparel. Anthropologie actually had black "skinny jeans" (not exactly jeans, but not leggings either... still a rather thick, forgiving fabric) that fit me and I haven't found pants to fit me since giving birth. I fit in their largest size (31...not sure what this is measuring) but was happy to find sharp pants that could turn out to be both a staple in my closet and a classic. If you approach American Apparel carefully, you can come away w/ very trendy yet conservative/pulled together looks. Be careful though since it is the trend for teens to shop there as of late. Good luck and more advice from anyone please!

Agreed, but what to do?

I am with you both! I like trendy fun clothes, but when I try them on, I feel like a poser. Every time I go shopping, I want to cry. It seems like the only choices are FRUMPY or teen. I am not overweight, but I am a mom, so I have hips. I want to look casual and comfortable, but I am not ready for all cotton sweatsuits all the time. My mother has not worn jeans in my memory, but I am not ready to give them up. Is there anywhere to try?

We canNOT be the only ones!!! Should we start a clothing line? Surely someone has. We just have to find her frustrated 30 something self!

I Love My Video Games

My family (okay, my parents) bought my brothers and me the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) years ago. I believe we still have it at the house... plugged into the tv in case my eldest brother wants to play his Nobunaga's Ambition, which is a very addictive strategy game.

My other brother loved Tetris and Dragon Warrior. I was able to get some weird games, like Shadowgate and The Uninvited, which were games like puzzles but you followed clues around the game and solved puzzles to keep going. Then I got hooked on Dragon Warrior so I got II, III, and IV.

Since moving out, I ended up with Fable and a used Xbox... which is another RPG. I then got a Playstation 2 with DragonQuest VIII for Christmas. I also got Guitar Hero and American Idol, and Okami. These games are great fun and very entertaining. I've tried Grand Theft Auto but can't seem to enjoy it. Not one bit and I am concerned about the violence that kids can do on "people" in the game. Kids are impressionable... I don't think they can completely distinguish between reality and a game... just like some kids (teens in particular) can't distinguish between a show that is Pro Wrestling and reality.

We now have a Wii and Wii Fit, which is really fun. We also have new dogs so playing the games have become few and far between. Hopefully, once the dogs are trained a little more, we can get back to the Wii Fit and play. Of course, the dogs help us with the fitness more than the Wii Fit does right now. :)

------------

I work for money - I blog for fun. I wish it was the other way around...

I appreciate you writing about this. There is no timetable for grief, it is a journey, a process. It's especially difficult over the holidays. I lit candles on December 14, 2009 in memory of all children- www.compassionatefriends.org This year I also bought 2 ornaments that reminded of my father & sister & placed them on my tree. They are still a part of my heart & my family & always will be.

Well, I'd me remiss if I didn't tell you my very favorite - TinkerTank. A hip bald Santa, Tooth Fairy named Bruce and Cupid as a cool black chick. Of course, I ought be totally honest and admit that it's all me.... I made it as my Christmas Card to the world last year, but it's fun. (And yes, I really do answer all the emails I get from kids.) I need to update is - and write the book, which is really what I intended to do.

My daughter was a real help in designing the characters, and did a lot of the research about the TRUE and culturally accurate histories of the holidays. ENJOY!

Hi Denise,

It's a parent's responsibility to make sure children watch classics like "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians." To do anything less, I would need to call child services.

The small children do not appreciate Santa and the Martians the way I do. Sigh. I might try and force them to watch it again next week. Maybe they've grown up enough to appreciate it.

I Knew There Was One Black Person

Hi Candelaria,

I knew there was at least one black person in "It's A Wonderful Life" and she was a woman!

Corynne at The Black Girl Site also likes "The Preacher's Wife." I guess I'm not partial to movies with angels because I haven't seen that one either. Another one to add to my "To Watch" list.

Always great to hear from you.

I Love It's A Wonderful Life

I watch it every single year and I almost always see something I forgot about it. IThis year I noticede how the Black people in the town (all of whom seem to be women) are part of the giving to safe the savings and loan and how the Black woman is looking for a man (the more things change the more they stay the same). I love the movie through and through!

There'a another holiday movie that I enjoyed a few year's ago with Holly Hunter and Robert Downey - Home for the Holidays.

I like both the original and the Denzel Washington & Whitney Houston remake of The Preacher's Wife. It's set during the holidays.

Megan,

Wow, the pressure's on now! I have to admit that there are a couple of cringe-worthy moments in "Christmas Vacation" that I don't really like -- I mean, it is National Lampoon, after all -- but the heart of this movie is just an average guy who wants his family to have a good Christmas, and we can all relate to that. Besides, after watching this movie, you'll finally get all your friends' "Cousin Eddie" references!
