That's disappointing. Had I known, I would have made more of a point of finding you at the game! ;O

Seriously, yesterday was the first professional basketball game I had taken PunditGirl to and she LOVED it! I was happy to be able to provide her with the opportunity to see two teams full of fit, athletic, accomplished women playing such an intense game.

If she happens to see some women kissing there or somewhere else, I have no problem with that.

I took my daughter to a Mystics game yesterday (I don't like the KissCam politics, but I still like the basketball and the WBNA) and I'm not sure why Wise said "Dads and daughter and lesbians" were the major fanbase.

We saw many, many families there and a lot of other moms taking with kids.

There were also small groups of men there.

I also think that the Mystics do a lot of things right, but they need to do a better job publicizing the positive things. I live in the DC Metro Area and this is the last time I can remember reading anything about them in the news since they drafted Marissa Coleman.

That was months ago.

A few additional points on the KissCam issue: The story first broke because of an article by the Washington Post's sports columnist Mike Wise. Wise seems quite supportive of the lesbian fans--but he also implies that the issue is a matter of “lesbians vs. kids” when he says, “Understood is that women’s professional basketball has two major fan bases: dads and daughters, and lesbians. The KissCam issue, frivolous on its surface, puts the effort to cater to both audiences squarely at odds.”

Not exactly. Some of the dads may be gay. Some of the lesbians may have
daughters. Some of the daughters may turn out to be lesbians themselves
(and not because they saw two women kissing at a WNBA game). Society
doesn’t divide into neat and tidy teams with uniforms.

The Mystics aren’t all bad, either. They apparently send representatives to the big benefit dinners run by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the country's largest LGBT advocacy group, and even brought the whole team once.

Still, I think a "kiss in" by lesbian fans at a Mystics game would be a great way to bring attention to the issue, as I suggested in a post I wrote about this last week over at Mombian. If straight women like Sarah want to join in the fun, I say that's even better!

And I for one would happily fly you up here just so we could be on that spinster aunt cam (a demographic I'M rapidly approaching if not already there...sorta plannning on redefining it in hotter terms, though. ;)) And it makes me really really smile to think what they'd get if they focused it on us, or any BlogHer woman, of any orientation, really. It's a gamble altogether.

Your point is spot-on as usual, though, and it's why I've enjoyed the comments on the mainstream media articles for the most part, which have been a cut above the usual in intelligence and insight. Lesbian ticket holders are saying hey, we support you, we buy your stuff, what about us? Some have said they'll stop. Others are saying, hey, just play basketball.

I didn't like Sheila Johnson's "explanation" of this in any event, which irrirates me in spite of the distaste I have for this kind of camera in the first place. So thanks for wrecking my head, Mystics. THANKS. (I'll still go watch them play, though, which probably says more than any of my other ranting.)

by how they decided that a large percentage of their audience was lesbians anyway? Really? How did come to that conclusion? And then to openly announce it like it's a bad thing? Wow! Who was the brainchild behind this? Let's piss off our best customers by announcing that they are a bad influence. Hmmm.....Politics aside, possibly one of the dumbest business decisions ever.

Bad play, Mystics

This is an increasingly common double standard in how businesses are "accepting" gay famillies and gay people. They certainly want our money, and in some sectors we are a formidible demographic. In women's sports? I would argue the determining demographic. But they can't figure out how to handle our participation without offending some stereotypical biases--not that, as you say, sane people regardless of sexuality really want to be on a Kissing Cam anywhere. So maybe they could deploy the Spinster Aunts Cam to use when they see two women sitting together. That would make them feel more comfortable about our appearance on camera while supporting their team.

(I love Amber's story! Heh!)
