Yep! Been there...

Honestly, it's a balancing act where no one wins...and someone always loses out. Take a typical morning in caregiverland: Take husband to work. Walk niece to her elementary class. Give mom her meds, breakfast and put her back in bed for a morning nap. Conference call with co-worker on the East Coast (done while I comb my niece's hair).

To be honest, having a career that allows me flextime at home in the mornings is the only way I have survived! I wonder if there are any other caregivers and Sandwhich Generation folks who have changed careers to accomodate these time demands?

NEVER thought I'd homeschool!

As a product of public schools (and a former coach at a private school) with grandparents and greatgrandparents and a sibling who teach or taught in the public school system, I certainly never thought I'd homeschool. I never thought I'd be one of THOSE people. Then I had my own children and, well, here we are five years into our homeschooling career (if you don't count those first five also known simply as "parenthood").

For those of us who've been able to make it possible (I quit my job and we live on a relative shoe-string budget), who enjoy being with their children (really, some people don't), who are inquisitive and willing to put in the time and effort, it's a godsend.

Do I ever doubt our decision? YOU BET! But then the new school year comes around and we hear our friends, or strangers in supermarkets, or folks in the park talking about the trials and tribulations of the new school year - and once again I'm certain we made the right choice.

I found this by googling 'great back to school photos'. Great advice and amazing shots! I never thought to take the series of photos. School starts in two weeks and you've given me some amazing ideas. Thanks for sharing!

i totally agree with all of these EXCEPT for number 9. if you dont plan on bringing your teen with you shopping, you can plan on doing a lot of returns and definetly an unhappy child. im not saying to spoil them, but keep in mind appearance does have an effect on their self-esteem. you dont want your teen going to school in clothes they hate and having that take a blow on their confidence. try and find a happy medium. happy shopping!

Oh, this choked me up -- the sweet picture of her walking away with her big backpack! My daughter starts kindergarten in two weeks, and I am already feeling emotional about it. I cried when I sent her off to day camp last week, so I'm sure I'll be a mess when school starts.

Anyway, I love the idea of documenting the different steps of getting ready that first morning. Great pictures.
