is fair trade certified. For a while, I was buying coffee in a place that used the Rainforest Alliance Cert., but didn't realize how limited it was. Glad I switched already based on other factors.

Virginia DeBolt
BlogHer Technology CE | Web Teacher | First 50 Words

free produce exchange

This is a little off topic but similar. There is a group called Hillside Produce Cooperative. Once a month they get together with their extra produce and do a little swap so everyone gets some of everything everyone brought. Its a great idea to share what you won't use and end up with a great bag of home grown food!!! The website is hillsideproducecooperative.org. Our next exchange is this Saturday Oct. 17th!!!

Rural Fruit Gleaning

Before I moved to our little farm, I'd been known to stop and pick apples from volunteer trees along the roadside. I can't stand to see food go to waste! It's great to hear that I'm not the only one.

With just the two of us an the dog (who admittedly loves apples), we can't keep up with what our trees produce. I'll start looking for places to donate our excess.

Life on the farm: http://haphazardhomestead.blogspot.com/

I understand Skinchik had a bad experience with them, but I've heard good things from others. I'd like to try Sophyto for myself, but I don't want to get ripped off like Skinchick. What stores are they in?

Rebecca

anti-aging-skin-care.weebly.com

More fruit than most can use

I, too, was the recipient of loads of fruit this year, and for that I am very grateful. I like to try new recipes, especially when canning, and receiving a bounty of test material is always a treat. And sharing the experiments with the grower is great - sometimes they are amazed to see what their fruit can morph into.

Aside from being totally a fun notion

I think this is truly important. There is so much food that goes to waste simply because people don't tend to their trees, or don't know what to do with it when they do harvest their fruits. I love the idea of giving the well-gotten goods to food banks as well. What better way to put a dent in hunger in your own community?

Beth,

It was actually your post-BlogHer post where you pointed out the organic fruit snacks (or whatever they were) in plastic bags (swag) that inspired me to write this. So thank you! :)

Oh, and the granola bars rock!

Thanks for mentioning packaging waste!

It seems like a lot of us pay attention to the food and miss the plastic packaging, which is not only wasteful but could contain harmful chemicals.

Love the granola bar recipes. Will try and make some for us.

Thanks for the mention Amy! Now that I've looked at a kabillion lunch containers, I can visit some of the blogs you mentioned and figure out what to put IN said containers!

Chicago Foodie Resources

A few useful sites, if you want to scope out Chicago food finds:

Hungry Magazine -- Chicago-focused e-zine that reviews restaurants and offers podcast interviews with chefs.

The Local Beet -- Chicago's e-zine of local eating (not just eating locally, but eating locally grown, seasonal, and usually sustainable or organic food).

LTHForum -- the premier Chicago-based culinary chat site. You don't need to join to take advantage of this resource -- just visit and check out Eating Out in Chicagoland -- or use the search function to look for vegetarian, meat, or specific ethnicities of food.

This is a great food town. Enjoy.

Trattoria 225

A short ride away from downtown on the Blue Line is a great restaurant called Trattoria 225.

From their website:

"Trattoria 225 is a full service restaurant and bar featuring rustic
Italian dining. We offer wood-fired pizza, fresh salads, house-made
pastas and a variety of artisan gelato. We strongly believe in
supporting local producers and using organic products whenever possible.

Our
mission is simple... to provide you, your family and friends with a
fantastic, affordable meal that incorporates quality, organic, local
and sustainable products in a space that is warm, inviting and fun."

I highly recommend it!
