I voted for Obama, and I watched Fox News some. I also took into account that the latter typically lies about things. The bias there is undeniable. I think a lot of the young people who voted for Obama did a lot more research than we have been given credit for.

Wow it's complicated! Six states prohibit all recording devices, and then some, like my state NY, don't expressly forbid it but will not allow you to display a photo of your completed ballot in a public forum (like the internets).

When I brought up online that I too felt that disdain for women, coming directly from McCain...that I was told by many on the right I was simply misinterpreting it, and it was actually disdain for the extremists on the abortion issue.

Glad to see another woman (along with many others) who felt the same way I did when watching McCain speak.

Given your experience as the founder of Emily's List, I'd love to know what role you think race will play in the 2008 presidential election, particularly when it comes to how undecided voters (especially women) will mark their ballots. Do you think the fact that Obama is black could dramatically affect the 14-point lead reported by CBS and The New York Times? How are leading pollsters like Celinda Lake and others with whom Emily's List works accounting for that factor, since it's never before been an issue in an American presidential outcome?

Why can't Liberals have a political debate on issues without nasty name calling?

You lose all credibily when you say things like Sarah Palin is the devil. I suggest you read about ad hominem attacks.

As for McKinney, whatever happened to her for assaulting that cop?

Here are some of her recent comments below. She says that 5,000 prisoners were killed and dumped in a Louisiana swamp. Of course, she has no proof, but for most Liberals facts aren't necessary.

I just read a post today by a man who ran for governor of Alaska and debated her 14 times. What a shock, he said that she is an expert at the non-answer. Let's hope that she will finally be called out for it.

I, too, have early memories of Congressional hearings and Watergate. When I look back on those who challenged the status quo back in the 60's, it's really striking how much they took on and accomplished. It's kind of hard to put into words. The situation was untenable and they wanted their voices to be heard.
I'm glad your mom is coming around. I wish my MIL would. It frustrates me a little that she's almost 80 and doesn't seem to be willing to go out on a limb (for her) when she goes to the polls and actually vote for a (gasp) Democrat. I feel that she owes it to the next generation to make things right. Of course, I guess I just feel that way because she's voting for McCain.

JC, my post also got lost, hence the typos in my posting.

My mother, of the same generation as yours, is finally coming around to the fact that speaking up--even regarding who you are voting for--might be better than keeping it hidden. I'm guessing we're around the same age, and for me the first political event that I can remember was Nixon resigning and the anti-war protests. For me, that certainly defined patriotism as questioning one's country and not to assume that those at the top are really out for everyone's best interest. I saw Michelle Obama's statement as a real bit of honesty and opening up to the public, and her being chastized for it was upsetting. That whole lockstep kind of thinking really needs to be revamped.

A Matter of Perspective

Hi, Laura,
I just wrote a long response only to have it get lost (sigh). You're right, it is a matter of perception. I've thought about the flak Michele Obama took when she talked about being really proud of her country for the first time; people questioned her patriotism.
My mom (who grew up during the Depression and WWII) and I talked about this earlier today and her feelings about patriotism have shifted from those instilled in her as a girl. We both left the conversation feeling that, to us, if you love your country, then it's your duty to speak out when you feel that things are not right.

It seems that the question needs to be to what perception of people patriots? In order for some people to defend censoring speech and others who defend any one's right of speech, you have differing perceptions of what this country means to them. And I wonder if the way they were raised has a strong impact on this. You know, the education that they got in the "home country." If one has parents who abide by the children need to be quiet rule, well then they might think that that is how citizens need to be. And if one comes from a home where people can speak out and even disagree with a parent, well there you have your free speechers. It's not just an issue of patriotism, but of behavior, of how one interacts with one's surroundings.
