Thanks for this great post! My eyes did not gloss over, and I thought it was very interesting. I also appreciated the links to various blogs, so I could see the platform in action.

I'm a Blogger kind of girl myself, though I did try Wordpress once.

I can't even text and walk

I can't even begin to imagine how people think they can text and drive. I can read a book and walk but I'd never ever dream of trying to read a book and drive.

Sassymonkey and Sassymonkey Reads.

Hands-free doesn't help

Or at least, it doesn't help enough. Insurance companies - who care only about the science of risk - want to see all cell phone use while driving eliminated because numerous studies have shown that it's a cognitive distraction, not a physical one.

Clearly, texting while driving is just plain dumb. You wouldn't read a book while driving, right? You're not looking at the road and you're not paying attention. Not OK.

But even when you're using a hands-free device, your attention is still outside the car, and not focused on what you're doing. It's better than texting or dialing, but not the same as just not being on the phone. If the call is that urgent, let it trump your travel and pull over.

Sierra Black - embracing the wild heart of parenting at www.childwild.com

It does indeed relate

This quote from you being an example:

But, there was no Will and Grace, no L Word and certainly no Kevin and Scotty trying to find a surrogate mother and egg donor for their soon-to-be baby on “Brothers and Sisters.” You may take these characters and television shows for granted, perhaps not even choose to tune in, but at least they are represented in popular culture today.

Virginia DeBolt
BlogHer Technology CE | Web Teacher | First 50 Words

Fascinating analysis

I've only seen parts of a couple of episodes of the L word, never having been a Showtime subscriber, but I have been aware of some of the cultural impact that you describe. I know that there is (or was) an L world island in Second Life as well. This is a great analysis of the way that one can leverage "legacy" and "new" media to market a brand.

Kim
BlogHer Contributing Editor|KimPearson.net|

A Great Thing For the Women in the World

I've watched The L Word religiously since it premiered on Showtime. I watched it because it was real, you saw the cast going through real issues that we all experience at some point in our life. I watched during their ups and downs, when they were in love and when they weren't and there was always one of the ladies you could connect with and you see yourself in that person.

The L Word was a great thing for the women in the world, gay or straight you enjoyed it because they dealt with issues that we all were having.

You fell in love with each character because they all had a certian je ne sais quoi that you couldn't help but fall in love with.

Assumptions

Assuming we are incomplete is a brilliant way to put it, Candelaria. And it goes beyond marketing messages. That's my particular annoyance right now but making assumptions is at the heart of the post I linked to where the blogger learned that thinking all your readers will stick around and wait for your giant photos and no text to load on your blog was somewhat presumptuous.

A bit more consideration and understanding and effort to provide value not just doing what works for us and not those with whom we are communicating would be a beautiful thing.

Thanks so much for your comment and kind words!

The preseumptions annoy me

Whether in on-line suscriptions or aritcle titles, I get annoyed that marketers assume I'm incomplete. So much of media, especially directed at women, presumes that we are incomplete, incompetenet, not living our best lives or not able to handle our business. I find this annoying.

These presumptions tend to make me not read further. Marketing fatigue is a reality.

Thanks for this post.
