Luke warm

You're right about Charles always needing a sidekick but I watched a documentary about his day to day life a few years ago and he was very nice to everyone he met, without being condescending, which the Queen Mother always used to come across as. As for Camilla, I think everyone is very luke warm about her.

And once you've finished Sarah Lyall's book, take a look at "Watching the English" by Kate Fox, which is a far more subtle picture of us. Mike Harling's book, Postacrds from Across the Pond" is a hilarious look at the UK by an American expat. Oh and you could also scan mine, "Rules, Britannia; An Insider's Guide to Life in the United Kingdom".

Charles & Camilla married in 2005

It was a very small ceremony. I think just their kids were there (I know the Queen wasn't). And it was a civil marriage, not a church wedding.

Sassymonkey and Sassymonkey Reads.

Research leads to employment for some

You might consider it blowing money on research, but someone got paid. In todays times people need to make a living and a research enables this process. I use to work for a variety of research companies, and I made a decent part time living doing it, and it placed food on my table.

I think you are more affected by the outcome of the statistics then the actual research itself, I hardly doubt the statistics are lying or are inaccurate in the findings of this particular study.

try not to take it so hard, and look at it as a paid study that someone made a living from, and that was the end result

Prince Charles got married again?

Sassymonkey, share that picture!

If you want to understand the English a bit better, I recommend Sarah Lyall's book " The Anglo Files"

http://www.thecluelesscrafter.com/

Personal stake

Hi Nita, welcome back! Thanks, I found these blogs very interesting too. I am not surprised you found racist blogs out there. The reason, I feel, these writers are different is because each one of them seems to have a personal stake in India -- they are trying to build a relationship with the society and culture, much like immigrants do. That makes their criticism more constructive and informative, and their praise more grounded. No?

I get a kick out of the term personally - and yes, I fall into the cougar category. It was all I could do a couple of weeks ago not to laugh out loud when a guy referred to me as a cougar in the grocery store. I'm fairly certain he didn't realize I could hear him when he told his friend, "Dude, check the cougar with the pink hair - I would totally do her." Shoot, he seemed to mean it as a compliment, so it's all good...

Snigdha, this is an interesting list and I am bookmarking this page so I can check out these blogs. It is always interesting to know what foreigners living in India feel. However, once I came across a rather racist blog too! I guess one gets all kinds.

Nita

I saw this a while back and think it's horrible. I didn't know about the case on Maryland. I'm shocked that this is going on in Afghanistan but even moreso that it's still viewed as such in my "backyard".

Women and the Great Depression

Hi Suzanne - Thanks for including us in this. Glad to see people discussing the topic and not assuming it has "gone away." Your comments made me think back to some of my historical research about women in the Great Depression. Here's actually a good summary of how the women's movement stalled during the Great Depression, yet there are some parallels to what is going on now. http://www.novelguide.com/a/discover/egd_02/egd_02_00550.html.

P.S. I'm with you on the more male caregivers being a big deal. It's an interesting twist. Especially because more people miss work for elder care than child care and it's going to be am even bigger issue. I'm thinking that maybe it's son's out of work? having to move back home? or Single/Divorced? Also, I note that my brother will have the responsibility because he lives near my parents. So, it may be a geographic thing.

Diane K.
