Sally Ellison's voice has changed my life.

It's the voice I wouldn't mind hearing when I die. The band is Hem. They are fabulous. Dan Messe writes the songs. They haven't toured for a bit because Sally had a baby (she sent in a tape of lullabies she made for a friend as her audition for the band.)

See them live if you can.

And here are some other musically gifted ladies....

I make it my business to support local/independent music. I like to support people who are starting out and making a living with their craft, but it's also selfish - I hear some of the best stuff in local/regional/small clubs, plain and simple.

Here's a lady who's fresh out of Boston's Berklee College of Music, Pauline Jean, an NYC-based Jazz vocalist. She's an excellent singer. Be one of the first past the East Coast to hear her.

That said, like the cello? Native American music? Good music? My friend Dawn Avery is brilliant, and a DC-area treasure. She was the artist in residence at the National Museum of the American Indian this past year, and I can't recommend her highly enough. If she blogged she'd be a BlogHer. : ) Buy her cd, seriously.

On a more mainstream level, I'm digging Colbie Caillat. Her songs are good.

A friend just recommended Uncle Earl,, an all-female bluegrass group. I trust him.

Over the Rhine is here next week...Karen Bergquist has a phenomenal voice. And so is Christine Kane! So excited!

The Pipettes are fun.

Alice Smith is pretty awesome.

And that's what I'm listening to. : )

My wife got me into Annie Lennox. She is a huge fan of hers. That song is amazing. I watched the whole video. Annie is one of the best singer/songwriters of our time. Cheers!

Don't forget Ani Difranco realeased last month her new compliation Canon, which harkins back to old Ani and is great, especially when driving.

And if you have time you should check out a new band called Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down Band, I will post the link down below. She is awesome, she sounds like Edie Brickell and Lucinda Williams had a love child with the song writing ability of an Ani Difranco and Joni Mitchell. Check her out. The CD is called Like the Linen.

I have the Annie Lennox and the Melissa Etheridge. I'll probably get the new Joni Mitchell, too.

The Annie Lennox is very poltical and powerful. It is also full of the beautiful music and stunning voice that have made Annie Lennox famous. She's using the music for the cause of women and women's health.

The Melissa Etheridge is also political and thoughtful and full of insights she's gained in the last years of struggle. It isn't the hard rocking albums she made in her youth, but contains some songs I would call ballads. One song, "Map of the Stars," is about how American women starve themselves in order to be "beautiful."

I also recently bought "The New Bossa Nova" by Luciana Souza. It is pop songs by the likes of Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Sting, and Brian Wilson set to a Bossa Nova beat. Souza is a wonderful singer, a bit like Jane Monheit or maybe early Joni Mitchell.

because in my house "Melissa" does not mean "ME", it means "MF" - or in the old lesbian music world "The other Melissa." :-) But anyway, back to your post....

Joni's album is awesome.

I have been dying to check out Annie but have had no time.

Etheridge, well, I have such a love hate with her. I usually decide not to buy her CD because I really don't love her work any longer. But then I feel some weird lesbian "support the sisterhood" and I end up ordering it. I also have to say that ME's wife is incredibly good at writing blog posts that lead me to show more interest in ME's music than I normally would. Her post about the song "Threesome" was fabulous and her post about "Irony" was one of the best things I've read in a long time - "Oh the irony."

Yes, Nordette, I do believe it's state law in Jersey that all residents are now given a copy of Born To Run at birth and required to pass a test on it when getting a drivers license or pay higher tolls on the Turnpike. ;^)

You make a very good point about Sony and their shady DRM. Even though I have a number of Sony products and get offers for free downloads I've never taken advantage of any of them for precisely that reason.

And indeed it is nice to support the truly indie artists out there. Just another benefit to discovering Phil.
