It's so outrageous that the church would rather have this little girl die trying to carry a pregnancy to term than admit that in this case abortion was the right decision. This little girl is an "innocent life", why doesn't the church care about her? As if Jesus would ever in a million years condemn a little girl to suffering and possibly death because her stepfather abused her.

Latest Update

So, the Vatican came out today & said that the Medical Doctor's Paper was fraudulent. The Doctors returned that that is an insult.
So, the Pope chimed in to restate the position (all fetuses be saved), and to influence the upcoming elections against the Left-Wing party.
Walter Veltroni (ex-Mayor of Rome who is running for Prime Minister as head of the Democratic Party) continued repeating that Italy is a secular state.
No news on what happened to the woman and police in Naples.

I'll keep my eyes peeled,

I'll keep my eyes peeled, but, you'll be glad to know that what transpired in Naples has gone to the highest levels of government, with most politicians and the Ministry of Health stating that the law will be untouched and the people responsible will be punished (although the local prosecutor in Naples who gave the go ahead will most likely stay in his place).

Horrifying

That makes me sick. Can you imagine police storming in during any procedure performed on men (say, a vasectomy?) and having anyone consider it acceptable? This is just another outrage emanating from forcing people to live under the rules of one particular religious belief.

push/pull

Hi Nordette --

It is a real push-pull for me -- on the one hand I'd want people who doubt to understand that doubt is so normal, so much a part of life -- on the other I imagine myself exposed like that and think what it might feel like to have my most intimate emails to a friend when I was depressed suddenly broadcast. Granted, I am no saint, and my emails and $2 will get you a fair cup of coffee, but still..you get my point.

I guess the best thing is to do what my auntie used to say and "just let God work it out in the wash".

Hi Helene -

Mother Teresa could not destroy the letters herself, as they were in the possession of the several spiritual advisors that she wrote to during her lifetime. I share with you the gladness that some people are benefitting from reading them -- and certainly Mother Teresa is beyond any discomfort at their release, but it does make me uneasy. I read somewhere that she was asking that her writings not be published as they would take the emphasis off God and put it on her. It does seem like we are seeing something too intimate for public view.

Mother Teresa was an inspirational woman.

Everyone has doubts from time to time, and now we know even Mother Teresa did. I believe she would not have wanted these notes published, but I don't believe it lessens her life accomplishments in any way. She did many wonderful things, and spoke many beautiful words.

This is a post I did a while back about Mother Teresa - with quotes, pictures, and an inspirational video.

The Vatican's actions

I'm disappointed that the Vatican didn't honor Mother Theresa's request to destroy her writings. In essence, they betrayed her trust based on their beliefs that the writings would be important or valuable later. It was untrustworthy and seems consistent with the messages so many "religious" politicans are sending to Americans right now (i.e. Idaho Senator: "I perjured myself").

What's this world coming to when a near saint can't even trust the Vatican to honor her dying wishes - especially after all she did??!! (Although I do wonder why she didn't destroy them herself before she died....and I am glad the content is helping people.) I just worry that the underlying message of the Vatican is detrimental to many.

I'm glad they released her letters

Sometimes we think we're not good people of faith when we doubt, yet I remind myself of the man who said to Jesus "Help thou my unbelief."

We especially take ourselves to task when we doubt ourselves. I know too much self doubt is not good, but lIke Lindsey, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who questions. I also appreciated the quote from Living with Joy. It's true that God as presented in the Bible often used weak vessels or at least what appeared to be weak vessels. It's not surprising since humility is presented as a desirable trait in people of faith.

Actually, I think mental health professionals would be concerned about people who never wonder if they may be on the wrong path or consider the possibility that they may be misguided. I think we call people with no self-doubt ego maniacs/conceited.

Learning of Mother Teresa's self-doubt causes me to be more convinced that she was sincere about her work and not seeking fame as some of her critics have accused her. I suppose these people tend to be cynical about most good deeds. My mother would have applied "as a man thinketh so is he" to this type of thinking, which is why I question my own nature sometimes when I assume the worst about another person. Is it lack of trust or am I projecting my own negatives onto another?

I heard about the release of her letters on a news show while I was in the middle of something else. Thank you, Mata, for posting so I could learn more and think.

"Love is liquid. Brew and be drunkards!" ~~Nordette. And here's a link to the blog.
