Luke warm

You're right about Charles always needing a sidekick but I watched a documentary about his day to day life a few years ago and he was very nice to everyone he met, without being condescending, which the Queen Mother always used to come across as. As for Camilla, I think everyone is very luke warm about her.

And once you've finished Sarah Lyall's book, take a look at "Watching the English" by Kate Fox, which is a far more subtle picture of us. Mike Harling's book, Postacrds from Across the Pond" is a hilarious look at the UK by an American expat. Oh and you could also scan mine, "Rules, Britannia; An Insider's Guide to Life in the United Kingdom".

Charles & Camilla married in 2005

It was a very small ceremony. I think just their kids were there (I know the Queen wasn't). And it was a civil marriage, not a church wedding.

Sassymonkey and Sassymonkey Reads.

Sassymonkey, share that picture!

If you want to understand the English a bit better, I recommend Sarah Lyall's book " The Anglo Files"

http://www.thecluelesscrafter.com/

Women and the Great Depression

Hi Suzanne - Thanks for including us in this. Glad to see people discussing the topic and not assuming it has "gone away." Your comments made me think back to some of my historical research about women in the Great Depression. Here's actually a good summary of how the women's movement stalled during the Great Depression, yet there are some parallels to what is going on now. http://www.novelguide.com/a/discover/egd_02/egd_02_00550.html.

P.S. I'm with you on the more male caregivers being a big deal. It's an interesting twist. Especially because more people miss work for elder care than child care and it's going to be am even bigger issue. I'm thinking that maybe it's son's out of work? having to move back home? or Single/Divorced? Also, I note that my brother will have the responsibility because he lives near my parents. So, it may be a geographic thing.

Diane K.

About CBC radio. A few years ago, when I was working from home, I got in a bit of a habit of listening to it in the morning. For whatever reason I cannot listen to most music when I work (the exception being classical...sometimes) but spoken word is ok. It actually kept me from going stir-crazy and I actually got a few good book recommendations out of it. Still can't listen to it in the evenings though.

Sassymonkey and Sassymonkey Reads.

Loving the show

Great show! It speaks to both hockey and skating fans alike which means my husband stays in the room when it is on. I love hockey too and seeing these players hit the ice in this way is a fabulous idea.

CBC has only captured my attention with with Dragons Den and now Battle of the Blades, I still won't listen to CBC radio... no, you can't make me. :) So, thanks for bringing this topic up. Toe pick aside I hope they pick this show up again for a new season.

And honestly, most people I know don't actually cook it on Thanksgiving Day. A lot of people I know do it on the Sunday. We're having turkey dinner on the Saturday and have been invited somewhere else on the Sunday. We're easy-going like that. ;-)

Enjoy your turkey! Looking forward to see what you do with the leftovers. :)

Sassymonkey and Sassymonkey Reads.

Our "shopping day" is much later

In Canada the big shopping day is Boxing Day, the day after Christmas. It's still nothing compared to Black Friday. Much calmer. People line up before the stores open but still not quite as early. Some of the online "Boxing Day" specials start on Christmas Eve. That's how we got our big screen tv last year, but you would be hard pressed to find me in a store on Boxing day. I can't handle the crowds.

Sassymonkey and Sassymonkey Reads.

Last year I vowed ...

... to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving, it's just so much more sensible to celebrate in October and I love the lower-key Canadian version. Plus, I never actually get to COOK my favorite meal! So I'll be sticking closer to tradition, turkey and all the trimmings.

Alanna Kellogg Kitchen Parade & A Veggie Venture

Canadian Thanksgiving

My husband and I celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving last year with my in-laws in Ottawa. When we were there, I was surprised by how calm and relaxing the holiday was and realized one major difference. In the US, Thanksgiving seems like just an excuse for families to come together, ideally over some turkey, and prepare their attack on retailers the next day. People in the US line-up at Midnight (or earlier) for Friday morning door busters and early bird specials. I was surprised that Canadians treat Thanksgiving for what it truly is - a holiday in itself to be celebrated with loved ones, and they don't think about what deals are to be bought the next day.
