We got stuck in that "Should we go now? Do you think we'll get rained on?" place and ended up not leaving the house. Oops.

no potato sacks for me

When I heard that the museums were free, I wanted to go to the Agriculture Museum but D. my proposed companion, was having none of it. He REALLY wanted to go to the Museum of Civilization. A sea of people, and me keeping track of two 6 year old boys - with EVERYONE (except me, it seemed) dressed in red and white.

The rest of the day was pretty low key (splash pad in a park, Vietnamese noodle soup, neighbours back yard barbecue and cold beer) - except for the part where we ran into a Mountie in full dress uniform on my neighbours' front lawn.

Ok. So two votes for the river tour. I do like any excuse to get on a boat. ;-)

it always surprises me

I didn't choose any of the locations we visited this year but I really enjoyed them. One year we did the House of Commons. Another year we did the water filtration plant and the a mosque. Another time, my sister and brother in law took my son to the Supreme Court. It made quite an impression.

Before BlogHer '07, my spouse and I did the tourist thing in Chicago. We LOVED the river tour. It was truly excellent.

Doors Open started in Glasgow

In 1990. It's really spread pretty quickly. Toronto took it up fairly early, which is where I first heard about it. I only found two American cities on the Doors Open Canada site that do similar things - Lowell, Mass. does a doors open even and New York has Open House New York.

I'll be in Chicago for Blogher '09! We haven't figured out how many extra days we'll be there yet but I'll definitely look at adding that to our agenda. :)

Wow! That sounds really

Wow! That sounds really cool. I love to study the architecture of the cities I visit. I am fascinated by it really. When I see new building that catch my eye, I always construct in my mind what I think the floor plan would be. I'd like to see something like Doors Open Canada in the US. Though I do have to say, Chicago has an excellent Architecture Foundation, which gives many guided tours options for most anything you might want to see. And the docent are so knowlegeble. I highly suggest the River Tour if you're ever in Chicago. I learn so many new things every time I take it.

Saint Phyllis gets another fan

My best friend (@orangeobsessed as metioned above, and yes she is obsessed with the colour orange) was in town for my birthday last weekend and we introduced her to Phyllis's butter tarts. She declared them yummy and was won over by the same thing we were - the crust. Go figure! (I have a hunch that she uses lard in her crust...)

Canadians may be "nice" but we have very firm views of what is right and what is wrong - even if we can't agree with our fellow Canadians. ;-)

I don't think anyone ever wants to post about someones death. You always hope they will be safe and alive when they are found. But, at least the men are arrested.

My Canadian mother lived ...

... for her butter tarts. The comments on my recipe for Butter Tart Bars are an example of how fiendish Canadians are about their butter tarts! You know how Canadians are always so "nice"? Well, maybe not so much when we mess with their butter tarts!

Splurge for your birthday and @orangeobsessed's visit. Hell, maybe you could eat 30? ;-)

Bacon butter tarts? You should make some and bring them to BlogHer. They'd be a huge hit.

It's funny that you say people who don't usually like sweets devour these. Butter and sugar! That's awesome!

My uncle is Canadian and I will definitely have to ask him if he has any memories of having this as a child. Sounds super yum...but, really ,with butter and sugar --- how can one go wrong?
