Plan for your future now

I Ask Emma, Mint.com, and Smarty Pig are all good sites to help better organize your finances. Along these same lines you have to prepare your finances in case of emergency or loss. These sites can help you understand your assets but I think they lack in helping to plan your future. I am the social marketing manager for the start-up business, Confidant. Confidant (www.beconfidant.com) is an online service which organizes and manages a family’s critical information in one spot. Confidant gives secure access to family members or friends in case of emergency or loss. It is a great and confidential way to prepare your finances and to protect yourself and your family.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Hello Gena,

You can't imagine how excited I was to find your posting. This is a red letter day for me, the first comment on my first post in my first blog! Thank you for your kind comments and I'm delighted that you liked the website. If you think the 'front end' is cool, you wouldn't believe the teaching area that sits behind it. It's our baby and we're really, really proud of it.

We had some great news today. Our partners, the University of Hertfordshire (just outside London in the UK), who validate our Degree courses, have given us the go ahead to develop the final year of our Design Degrees for online delivery. This means that people can study for a UK Design Degree from anywhere in the world. We've also been approved to develop a Digital Media Degree, which was the subject next on our list. This means a lot of hard work to come, but we're used to that and we are extremely excited about it. Keep checking the website from time to time and you will see what's happening.

PS. Thanks for the tips about bugaboos (that's a new word for me) Also, seeing your lovely picture has encouraged me to upload mine, so fingers crossed, here goes....

Interesting idea

Kids and teens start so many trends so quickly that I can't help but think that if a few of us "uncool" adults started paying attention we could find some great superstar investments! Imagine buying Apple stock right when the ipod came out or Disney stock before the careers Lindsay Lohan/Hilary Duff/Miley Cyrus took off?

I think the hard part is realizing what will take off so much that it will be more than a flash in the pan.

I think it is great that your company is providing online educational access to creative topics like design. I went to your site and it looks very cool.

Keep posting and be on the look out for the bugaboos. Yank them out when you can before you hit send. I speak from way too much experience.

Blogging and spelling....

I've just re-read my posting of late last night and identified a number of spelling errors. Affer instead of after can be put down to a typo, but it's particularly embarrassing that I can't spell embarassing.

The Axe recommendation jumped out at me because I have seen many of their ads that offended me with their misogyny. Instead of buying their stock, I have discouraged my son from choosing their products.

Yes. I've been thinking

Yes. I've been thinking about writing a post about the fallacy of the sisterhood. I attended an all-girl highschool and can attest to the viciousness of girls. Recently, I've experienced some personal backlash from a bit of snark in one of my posts. The thing is that the women offended have just cut me off -- no discussion, no reasoning, nothing. Men would never do that. I'll have to refer back to this.

Live below your means and

Live below your means and throw all your money into the stock market for 30 years and never touch it. blah blah

With the market doing somersaults, you may break even within 10 years.

Suze Orman is not putting her money in a 401k (mutual funds) so why is she suggesting it?

Dave Ramsey - the bulk of his money is in his businesses.

Suze Orman estimated her liquid net worth at about $25 million, with another $7 million worth of houses. With just $1 million of that in stocks, it means that just 4% of her liquid net worth is in the stock market.

-source: Marketwatch

Both of these gurus have enough money to lose in the market so what do they care. I'm sure Dave has a limited amount in the stock market as well.

However, the majority of their listeners have the majority of their wealth in a 401k or mutual funds.

What does Orman do with the rest of her money? Deborah Solomon asked, and was told: "Save it and build it in municipal bonds. I buy zero-coupon municipal bonds, and all the bonds I buy are triple-A-rated and insured so that even if the city goes under, I get my money. I take a little lower interest rate to make sure my bonds are 100 percent safe and sound. "

As for playing the stock market, Orman said "I have a million dollars in the stock market, because if I lose a million dollars, I don't personally care."

Do what personal finance gurus do, and not say.

Build a business like Dave Ramsey. Buy real estate and municipal bonds like Suze Orman.

Do what personal finance gurus do, and not say.

I know that Dave and Suze give good advice to some people I am not against them totally. They both have done well.

I just feel you should do your own due diligence when taking advice from any personal finance expert.

By they way, do you know anyone that solely became rich via a 401k?

I'm sure rich people became rich through building a business in addition to a 401k and perhaps real estate .

I L-O-V-E Social Networking

I'm an avid Facebook-er and Twitterer and LinkedIn-er myself. I have a MySpace page, but I don't get on it very often.

My advice would be NOT to fear social media, embrace it. I think too many people get wrapped around what these social networking sites COULD do for them, rather than having fun with it. Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, LinkedIn are ways for you to tell the online world who you are and what you're up to. People will "follow," "befriend," and "link" to you because you're you, and they want to get to know you.

Oh, and don't feel bad about not allowing someone to join your social network. If someone wants to join mine, and I don't know them, I usually just ask them who they are and/or why do they want to join my network.

The best way to learn is to dive in, and have fun!
