Hands-free doesn't help

Or at least, it doesn't help enough. Insurance companies - who care only about the science of risk - want to see all cell phone use while driving eliminated because numerous studies have shown that it's a cognitive distraction, not a physical one.

Clearly, texting while driving is just plain dumb. You wouldn't read a book while driving, right? You're not looking at the road and you're not paying attention. Not OK.

But even when you're using a hands-free device, your attention is still outside the car, and not focused on what you're doing. It's better than texting or dialing, but not the same as just not being on the phone. If the call is that urgent, let it trump your travel and pull over.

Sierra Black - embracing the wild heart of parenting at www.childwild.com

does he complain about being traumatized by the sound of pages turning? Then there's the problem of having a laptop in bed and clicking the mouse button–another etiquette issue.

Virginia DeBolt
BlogHer Technology CE | Web Teacher | First 50 Words

Kindle and Bedroom Etiquette?

I own a kindle and was reading Herodotus on it in bed.

My husband informed me the next morning that he was traumatized briefly by a mysterious clicking noise. He feared something unusual giving way in the plumbing..... but then was relieved to discover that it was my thumbs on the Kindle.

Now, I really think I am being less of a bother than he is with his snoring.

Would I take my iPOD to bed? No.

Maybe the iPhone plastic surgery game would be more fun if the subjects nose was a red blub that lit up when the "doctor" accidently removed her spleen? I might play it then. It certainly would highlight the danger of surgery and show that it is not something to take so lightly.

Suzanne Reisman, Contributing Editor - Feminism & Gender Campaign for Unshaved Snatch (CUSS) & Oth

I really appreciate the perspective, Suzanne. I can see where something like that would be life-changing in a positive way.

I still don't get the "fun video game" aspect of plastic surgery though. Although I do like Operation. Maybe I'm a hypocrite.

Mom-101

Cool Mom Picks.com

My Plastic Surgery

I'm going to write my own book. Like Rebecca, I had a breast reduction, and it was one of the three best decisions I ever made. (The other two are, in no particular order, dropping out of law school on my third day, and asking the man who was to become my husband out on a date.) I blogged about my breast reduction at BlogHer (loved the results, mocked the crap out of the process, which was as farcical as Dr. Salzhauer's comic-book depiction of himself). My friend Alex Elliot had the surgery a few years before me, and she also is grateful for the procedure, although it meant that she had difficulty with breastfeeding. She was so pleased with her results, that when I decided to do it three years after she did, I used her doctor.

Fujifilm

Beyond the nostalgia angle, I have to admit that I'm a little perplexed by the interest in instant photos. However, Fujifilm just came out with a new instant film camera, the Fujifilm Instax Mini 7S, for only $85. The prints are about the size of a credit card, with an image area of 1.8- by 2.4-inches.

I have a first generation

I have a first generation Kindle on loan from a friend and I love it when I travel or want to go read in a coffee shop. I still buy some books in paper because I like books and there are some that I want to read in the book form. (Don't ask me to explain I really don't understand how I decide I want some books on my e-reader and others not)

When I was in college I would have killed to have all my books on an e-reader. I could have carried 8 textbooks everyday in a 1lb reader. My biology text alone weighed 8 lbs. It was horrible. So you have a huge text or two, your laptop and a purse. It gets tiring and it gave me alot of shoulder/back issues to lug that around. I always hoped my university would make the change over to e-books but it didn't happen before I graduated :-(

I'd probably not choose e-books

Not to study off of, for a variety of reasons. One being that I just like books but what about theft? If someone stole (or if you lost) your e-book reader you'd be screwed. If you lose a book you lose that book. If you lose a reader...well...you lose everything. But maybe I'm just paranoid. lol

I like e-books. I do. But I'd never buy anything as an e-book that wouldn't want to lose. Just too much can happen with an ebook reader. Yep, I don't just technology. There, I said it. lol

Sassymonkey and Sassymonkey Reads.

Now that my children are older, ages 9 and 13, there are some tricky challenges that accompany using all of this George Jetson technology. I recently told my kids that CD's did not exist when I was their age and I swear I think their heads exploded. I am looking forward to sharing some of my own tips and tricks as well as writing about the latest trends and news as it relates to parenting our kids in this age of uber information. www.parentopia.com/blog

My first child is due at Christmas (I'm a blimp!) and this is something I've been thinking about a lot. I think my first six months at home is going to be very different to my mother's.

We don't own a TV, but have two laptops that are on pretty much the whole time we are home. I'm wondering how that will change, and if we'll feel the need to get a tv when we have an active toddler.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing everybody's stories!
