It's easy to solve this for future posts. Just click the words input format, right below the box where you enter text and select FULL HTML. That will allow the video to work. :-)

Such a gift you are giving your children!

Maria,

I loved this post. Your girls will be forever changed.

Our church has many opportunities to participate in helping others. I'm looking forward to taking a family trip - a transformational journey, where we go to a different country and actively participate in their world.

But, right here in this country there is a huge need for outreach. And you are introducing your children to something firsthand, which is truly a gift.

Children have such open hearts. We just have to see that and nurture it so that they will become adults with open hearts.

Thank you for sharing this story.

Shannon,

It sounds like you're doing a wonderful job with a very difficult but very important topic. Time and persistence will see you successfully instilling appreciation and consideration in your young ones.

All the best!

Well Done

What a great post, and certainly an important lesson you're teaching your children.

I don't have kids myself, but I do teach Sunday School and try to make giving a very regular portion of lessons. We have a piggy bank in the room in which goes change they (and adults in our church) want to donate. When there's some money saved up, we decide on a charity. We recently put together 4 shoeboxes of toys, personal hygiene items and school supplies for a worldwide holiday charity program.

We've already discussed that over the summer we'll have a vegetable garden and donate the harvest to our local rescue mission. I'm constantly impressed by the giving nature of the children.

Charitable Giving

The holidays is a great time to give to those in need and i think giving to a charity is a great way to donate. I found this one Web site that you can donate money to and that money will help fund a loan to women entreprenuers in developing countries. With the loan money these women are able to grow their businesses. They have truly inspiring stories and its a great program. The Web site is Kiva.org.

Hi Susie,

Thanks for sharing your post, and for linking back to this one. I like the idea of giving gifts that support a goal a lot. In fact, I'm just about to write a post on my personal blog, Have Fun * Do Good, letting readers know that they can give themselves and others the gift of career coaching sessions--with me!

Gifts that help people reach their dreams and goals

Hey,

I love all of your posts about gift giving. The central theme seems to be to give thoughtfully, not out of obligation, not generic gifts.

I just wrote a similar post on "Giving Goal-driven Gifts" after seeing a really cool ad from Sears.

Hope you find it interesting and thought provoking!

Hi Kate

I saw your comment on my comment on American Dream.

I wanted to say, thanks for your obvious connection with what I wrote and I came here to see who you are.
I love what you say here too.
If we don't start with ourselves doing small things in our direct environment, we won't make a difference at all.

That is where we take power and responsibility, and in the process we make our own and other people's lives as best as we can.

Have a great Christmas,

Maybe What I mean to say is...

I feel myself having the urge to "help" others by giving them "stuff";
it is just ingrained in our culture I guess as Americans. I try to
resist though and use my head to try to get to the root of their
problems, and see if there is something really life changing I can do.
It isn't easy, and it isn't fast, but you can change someone's life
forever.

I don't have the answers, and some times I get discouraged by all of the need.

I wasn't knocking giving cheap notebooks to poor people; it is hard
for me to explain but I was trying to make a point that the notebook
didn't really meet their needs. In fact you can buy soap, notebooks,
cheap plastic toys in just about any country and it would save the
cost of shipping them from the US if people could just donate $5 to be
spent in the local economy in the area the impoverished community is
in. I also have had a lot of people mail me Jello from the US in order
to give to people. I don't really know what to make of that, and why
is Jello such an important thing to donate? Why do they need Jello?
How about vitamins? How about donate the $3 to some one who can buy
them 6lbs of rice with it? The inefficiency of charity bothers me. Too
much waste.

I couldn't come up with a comfortable reaction to that story, having had NO experience with breast feeding, and didn't want to offend those who have. Your insight is very helpful.

Knitted Breasts

I have to admit, when I first saw your link to the knitted breasts on Twitter, it was kinda funny. But recalling my first days as a nursing mother, it was really unnerving when the nurse literally grabbed my breast to hastily put it in my oldest son's mouth.

These knitted breasts would indeed make for a great teaching tool for nurses and lactation consultants.

Also, what a great find with the quilting project too...heartbreaking, but a good cause nonetheless.
