I thought I was the only one who wanted to run away. I am brand new to this site, so I am looking for other women whose lives are as crazy as mine. I live in Columbia, SC, and I need someone to talk to about the things that women handle on a daily basis. Thanks, Ashley

My sympathy

And yes - the story of your grief never seems to come to an end.

My mother died about four years ago and I still have so many painful thoughts, and moments when I feel as though I'm not healing. Does one heal?

My mother was also very sick, and I think no one who has not experienced it, can know how complicated and mixed up things can be. Its tough to look after a sick person. It goes on and on and on. I feel a lot of guilt because I did not measure up to the person I thought I could be in that situation. I learnt a lot about myself, and a lot of it was not good. Its difficult to get past the guilt.

You learn about your siblings, too. I also experienced a similar drama with people fighting when you would have thought they would pull together and be supportive.

One big lesson I learnt was that you cannot control how things happen. And you should not feel guilty because of that. You just have to accept what actually happened and be kind to yourself and those around you. You cannot afford to take on responsibility for what happened. In the end, you were with her, and gave her your love and that is the most important thing.

When I'm feeling at my worst, and beating myself up - I always try to think what my mother would have told me. Would she have blamed me, or criticized me for the way things went? No way! She would just give me love. So why punish myself, when she would forgive me?

Cindy W is right on for bestowing the "Crappy TV Mother" award to Livia Soprano. Like her namesake in "I, Claudius," let's just say that was one mother you didn't cross!

You could also add Mama, from Carol Burnett's Mama's Family skits. God, if you grew up with her, your self esteem issues would be more than any therapist could handle!

As far as favorite good TV Moms, I have to go with a classic: Claire Huxtable.

Marge gets my vote too! I just watched an episode today when she sings "Scrubbing You!"to the tune of the song "Loving You" while she is washing the dishes.

What a sweet mom! :)

Everyone loves Ruth! I don't know... a little meek for my taste or something? Which is not to say she isn't lovely in her own way, just not my, err, bag as it were :)

Gemma Teller-Morrow

Katey Sagal as Gemma Teller-Morrow on Sons of Anarchy is my choice for... best and worst mom. She is fiercely loyal to and protective of her son and will do anything for her family. She's also manipulative and ruthless and holds some big secrets.

I still want to be her.

Very informative

And, terribly funny. I must be immune to this so far because I get very few comments anyway and because I am a writer by hobby. So, even if no one's reading I am moved by the compulsion to write and often do. The few posts I comment on are generally the ones that interest or inspire me although I do read many more from time to time. Still, I am sure the time may come when I am obsessively sitting and monitoring every comment and for that day I file this away. Thank you for a smart, tongue-in-cheek post that I very much enjoyed reading. :)

Rarely best, sometimes worst, definitely the most realistic. Great TV mom.

More HBO moms

I think Livia Soprano might have Janice beat. She tried to have her own son murdered, after all. And she raised her sociopathic kids, so you know... Also, Lois, Bill's mom on "Big Love"? She terrifies me.

I don't know why, but I think one of the best moms might be Ruth on "Six Feet Under," just because she was so realistic. Completely flawed, completely oblivious to most of what was going on in her kids' lives, but when they needed her, she was there 100%. Remember when Nate was scared about his brain surgery and she held him and said, "I'm not letting you go"? God, I mist up just remembering that.

Can't think of any other extreme good/bad moms off the top of my head, but I am loving this discussion so far.

My favorites

I love Tami Taylor of Friday Night Lights. I feel like I should be creating some sort of parenting playbook based on things she says. I also like Lorelai Gilmore, even though I recognize that she is kind of ridiculous.

For worst TV mom, Colleen Donaghy (Jack's mom on 30 Rock) is pretty cringe-worthy and demanding!

that I've not seen virtually all of these (except Mommie Dearest, and if I had to watch that again, well, I couldn't.)

I am curious though... of each of these fictional moms, who actually wrote the script for her character?
