You Talking to Me?

Have I seen what my teenagers write about me? Is that what you mean? In my case, yes. My stepdaughter has a blog and she writes about me about as much as I write about her, and that's pretty much not at all, except incidentally.

My rule of thumb

I just started my blog in August and I write exclusively about my teens and how their issues connect with my own. I don't use names and only post an occassional picture. They know they can read it anytime. I often hear, "God mom, are you going to put that in your blog?" So far though, they seem to be ok with all of it. They sometimes want to read a post, too. Sometimes.

http://www.2teen.wordpress.com

Love your tent!

I've watched that movie too and ive been planning to mimic that room for my daughter's room too! Thanks for the diagram it will help a lot. My plan is to create a princess themed room plus the girls tent. I bought some very pink beddings at http://bethanybaby.com to accentuate the room. Thanks for the lampshade trick!

I'm with ya! We let our son cry it out after eight months of waking up between 2-5 times a night. He always went down fine, but woke wake up to hang out with Mom. AYEE!

Mommy doesn't play peek a boo at 3am. It's tough, but I blogged about it http://letthewildrumpusstart.typepad.com/let-the-wild-rumpus-start/2009/... .

It's no fun, but good for you for getting through it!

Great blog! I think it can pretty well be assumed that the feeling of injustice is universal. We all want the best for ourselves and we want what we want when we want it, whether or not we say so out loud.

My husband was complaining about his job one day and all I could say, though I know his job is horriblehorriblehorrible, was, "At least you have a job and we can afford to keep our house." No, life is not fair, but how fortunate we have been so far compared to others around us!

Education

www.mothersraisingboys.com

As far as my kids school, I'm happy. It's a big school, but I feel like they make each classroom small enough that the children receive a good amoount of individual attention. What concerns me is the current educational system in terms of how it goes against the way boys learn.

I wrote about this here:http://www.mothersraisingboys.com/?p=7

and http://www.mothersraisingboys.com/?p=196

What I hate about your kid's school is all the rules that seem to prevent the children who excel or fail to from being noticed. Everything is fair in a way that, in my opinion, has the potential to demotivate. (see above article on this)

Regarding the state of our education, I think we are in trouble, at least our boys are anyways and it concerns me. Not all children are perfect little soldiers marching through life. I find it hypocritical that the system celebrates our differences in some ways, but shuns against noticing differences when the possibility of disappointment might become an issue.

How is this approach preparing our children for life's struggles or disappointments both personally and professionally? We can't hold our children's hands forever.

If Life Were Fair, What Would Kids Have to Complain About?

I feel your pain. It often doesn't matter if kids have a preference or not; whatever you offer them, they like to make themselves the victim. If you offer Mac&Cheese for lunch, they want a ham sandwich. If you offer a ham sandwich, they can't live without Mac&Cheese. If you have two identical portions and they get second choice, their portion is inevitably grossly smaller than the other in their mind.

I've found the best way to combat the "Life isn't fair" line is too show them what life is like when it really isn't fair. When they complain about what's for lunch, I let them know that they are free to make whatever they want, but if I'm making it, there is a narrow list of choices. This often jolts them back from their original complaint, because making a ham sandwich is a far worse penalty then having to eat Mac&Cheese, even when they'd prefer the ham sandwich.

--

I am the father of two boys, and the author of "Your Family Constitution," a parenting book for modern parents.

Life is not fair

I couldn't agree with you more - life is not fair. I try to explain that to my two girls ages five and six and they just look at me, "huh?" I am sure we all know adults who still walk around saying "it's not fair." All I can think is that "you're right, it's not fair, and what are you going to do about it? Pick your head up and appreciate what you have and try to help others."

All we have in this life are choices. What is the point on dwelling on what we don't have, when we all can find things for which we can be grateful.

I have a very busy schedule balancing work, kids, household and freelance work.

What it works for me is to create a schedule and a to-do list for each area in my life and work at one list at a time ticking the tasks off.
