kai choy

There's two types of kai choy you can get in Malaysia - the one that's required in this dish is the thicker, less fibrous variety - mainly because the stem is a big part of the appeal.

In Sydney, Australia, it's not generally available in supermarkets, and even when I went to the huge Chinese market in Chinatown, I found it in one stall. So I'm very pleasantly surprised to hear from finefuriouslife that it is widely available in supermarkets in the States. That certainly makes things easier.

Kai choy - mustard greens

To the commenter above, I believe kai choy is the same thing as mustard greens, which are quite widely available and frequently called for in Western-style recipes. (I once made a white bean, bacon and mustard green dip from the Martha Stewart Hors D'Oeuvre Guide, for example, and I bought them at my regular supermarket in the US.)

There may be minor differences between the Asian and Western varieties but the leafy greens all share the same peppery, lightly tangy bite--I can attest to this, having grown up in Hong Kong.

kai choy

http://papayatreelimited.blogspot.com/

Hi M.E., thanks for visiting this site.

Kai choy is variously called chinese mustard cabbage or leaf cabbage.

It's not generally available in supermarkets. Chinese grocers in chinatown are the most likely places I can think of where they are available - and even then, not every shop would stock them.

But they are well worth tracking down for this dish. I hope you find them and let me know what you think of the soup.

I have a photo of kai choy and the soup on my site if that helps with identifying it.

http://papayatreelimited.blogspot.com/2008/10/leafy-greens.html

Cheers,

Audrey

This sounds so wonderful, but I don't exactly know what kai choy is. Can we get this in a regular supermarket in the U.S.? Would it also have another name?

Thanks,

Update on Aruna--thanks!

Dear Snigdha,

Thanks so much for the update on Aruna. I have been wanting to read about what's her current status for a long time. I had done a project on rape victims as a media student in 2002--that's when I had read the book--following which and spurred by the Mumbai local train rape of a minor watched mutely by five onlookers, another girl and I had done a project, where we had written case studies on four real life rape victims. This was followed by an open house discussion on the subject, where we raised money for one of the victims, who was unable to afford her operation. I do not know what happened to her either--that was a very chilling case too. I also wish to meet Pinki Virani at some point. Right now, am at Cambridge to pursue higher studies but if you could guide me reagrding how I could meet Pinki Virani, i'd be ever so grateful.

Richa.

Hello. I found your blog to be interesting having just returned from a month in china. I too am ready to go back! I will the larger streets are much cleaner now due to the olympics but the smaller side streets and alleyways are mostly unchanged. I do have to recommend you try the lamb kebabs next time. I too was nervous due to stories I had heard but if you find a stand that is busy or a small restaraunt with a lot of patrons the meat will be fresh and you will be fine. By the end of my trip we were going out almost every night for kebabs. I hope you are able to make the trip back soon. Also if you go to shanghai, the dumplings there are the best!

You actually went through the horror yourself! I'm glad you've found peace now. India has been dealing with this so-called Islamic terrorism for too long. I sometimes feel our governments have learned to simply live with it.
That's scary.

Snigdha, I didn't realize this was going on, and I definitely did not know you were there in danger. Please be safe, and thank you for keeping us informed. I know we all wish there was a magic pill to cure the human urge for acts of violence.

I understand what you are feeling

I left my country, Colombia, 11 years ago and I know how angry, hurt, and powerless you feel! I had a car bomb that destroyed my bussines and killed 11 police and 3 civilians. We had so many and still have car bombs. Two weeks ago another car bomb exploted in Cali that killed 4 people and wounded 23 more. Drug dealers, Guerrillas, Paramilitars, corrupt politicians and militars have played a big role in the 40 years of war in Colombia...and the inocent people are the ones who are paying the consecuences! There are more than 3.5 million of refugees & displaced that left their farms to live in the big cities because of the war around their villages. I wonder how and when is this going to end? If there is anything I can do, please let me know. Take care. Claudia. ruizcla@gmail.com

Socrates, I'm glad you felt safe back then. Right now nobody here is feeling that way. But then life goes on and we'll forget everything until the next blast.

But I do hope you'll be backto Indian in future and will be able to spend some anxiety-free time there :)

Imagine!

Raj, you have echoed the sentiments of many fellow Indians. I was just watching parts of a television debate about the issue: people seemed impatient and upset, and rightly so.

A member of the ruling alliance also blundered by saying that it's humanly impossible to stop determined terrorists (imagine that!).

The opposition's pressing for tougher laws, no one seems to be raising the all-important question of implementation: are our foot-soldiers, the first responders from the law enforcement, equipped to fight, investigate and then prosecute suspected terrorists? I doubt it.
