Oh bittersweet indeed

My son is 5 months old and I half dread the day he might prefer Daddy over me, as much as I know it's healthy! I never thought I'd say this, but I also dread weaning. You hit on the precious nursing time and the bond between mom and son. Even if it's largely ego-driven, there is nothing sweeter than knowing you can be your everything to your baby, even if it's just for a short time!

Your experience is not what

Your experience is not what I've seen, heard, or been apart of. I'm now grandmother age; though not yet a grandmother. I've expereinced mothers who do not plan their travel time around nap, bring nothing to entertain the baby/child and really don't seem to understand how their sweet little one has everyone on the plane wanting a stiff drink because they have a headache; or irritated because they couldn't work for the noise. Or...the mothers that change a dirty diaper on their lap when seating in the middle seat and really think thats ok. It's not. I am a mother, I love children; but adults to have the right of peaceful, restful, or work filled travel.

I would say you're very lucky, and also very tuned into what works for your child, and put that need above conveniant of time travel for yourself or getting a cheaper ticket come hell or high water.

I hope your husband loosens up a bit with allowing others to babysit. Children need to be exposed to people who are non family. Sometimes, they do better with others in fact.

Interesting read

traveling with babies/toddlers

My son was a big baby, so even for his first plane flight at 9 months, we had to have a seat for him. Which turned out to be a blessing, because we learned that he had the same reaction to the car seat on the plane as he did in the car -- he nearly always fell asleep immediately.

That worked until; about 2.5 or 3. That's when we got the portable DVD player, which was our constant travel companion until he was in elementary school. Now we still bring it occasionally, but he's just as happy with his Nintendo DS and a few magazines.

Huggies

I myself used Huggies from the time my children were baby's. I tried other brands and they never seemed to work as good. Now my grand baby uses them. The overnight Huggies was a life saver for me. My name is Cmarquis and my husband and I have three children togither. I own Clar's Baby Baskets at www.clarsbabybaskets.com and finding time with three children and one grand child is very uncommen. It is a good day when I can check emails. But I would not have it any other way.

Tried em all, Luvs are the best

We're cloth diapering now, but we used Luvs for years. We tried everything on the market, and Luvs were hands-down the best disposable diaper out there. No blowouts or leaks, no crystals coming off onto baby's skin, and no falling apart.

Like the commercial says "Live, Learn, and then get Luvs."

Thank you Denise. The feelings really do all blend together. it's tempting to pick them apart, but they're really part of the whole.

They grow up

And it just doesn't matter how old they are, what stage they are in - I was always ready but also not ready. My grown children still have the ability to make me both proud and sad at the same time, by some new achievement or growth or bit of wisdom they've gained.

Left hand, right hand... a successful job interview... same feelings, seriously.

Thanks Amber, it's good to know it won't last longer than a year.

And Laura, I spit my tea out laughing at that one. I also teach high school (when I'm not on leave) and man... it's funny to see what those kids (or their parents) do once they get into the comfort of their cars...

Prize Seeker

By the time they get to high school (where I teach) they have learned to stop picking their noses or have figured out that this needs to be a closet habit (until they start driving and then they can do it in the car). I wouldn't worry about it, unless she wants a prize for a really big "prize."

They all do this

I read a great article in Today's Parent about this. I was laughing out loud - this hits so close to home as the mom of a 3 1/2 year old. They just can't control that urge, but they will outgrow it.

Thanks, it helps to know I'm not alone. As busy as life gets sometimes it is easy fo feel that way and not remember that millions of women have done this all before me.

The Feeling Is Mutual

My daughter is 6 months. She is my only daughter (two older boys) and I wanted and wished for her for so long. There are times when my happiness is so overwhelming I think I am placing too much on this precious baby girl and like you, if I hold too tight she might be taken away. I always laugh at the saying that God made babies cute for a reason, but its true. He also made a different kind of love for children, a painful love, an all consuming love that transcends all others. Being a mom hurts, but its a pain I will gladly endure.

I don't know what I would have done but I doubt I would have handled it as well. I probably would've repremanded the little girl which would probably have gotten me in trouble.
