Great advice!

Thank you for posting this. It shows true wisdom, especially in respect to making healthy lifestyle changes. So many people focus so much on the end goal they don't pay attention to the journey. If you focus on the journey, you might realize how good it makes you feel (if you making realistic, sustainable changes), and that feeling can become the new goal, rather than fitting into a a certain size jeans.

Personal Finance is 80% behavior and 20% knowledge...

according to Dave Ramsey, personal finance guru.

When you can control the person in the mirror, your life will turn around.

I love to revist depression era stories. We see that with a little hard work and some tough choices we can be our own bailout, and choose not to participate in this recession, like these folks.... http://www.townhallforhope.com/

I've been thinking about looking up Depression era news stories and you compiled a few things here. Thanks so much. I wanted to see how people were able to thrive in those times and compare, prepare now. Thanks.

Plans and hugs

Fine post - lots to learn here.

Creating a plan for yourself is crucial. And it may be more about a plan to bring in more money - through work or selling things online or however.

Deep breaths are good too. So are friends who hug you, or feed you, and encourage you.

When I go to the supermarket, I usually set a strict limit on how much I will spend - the $20 in my pocket or $50 if it's a week with kids at home.

Well , I'm not so sure - my heart gets me into trouble

For certain situation I have to institute a sentry at the door. That passion thing, men, creativity, dreams postponed out of necessity can get the ole pumper to get riled up. Does not like to be denied without a good reason.

It took a long time to learn to reclaim the things I loved because of the woulda/coulda/shoulda's.

I think the empowerment think has to be worked out for most of us. Especially if we are being threatened or scared about our future. I think it comes down to what do I want and what is important to me.

Declarative sentences are good. Declarative intent is better. Deep breaths, a necessity.

Heart is the master of the mind

Handling turbulence with a mind that overshadows the heart is hard.
Most of the time we are our own worst critic and that inner critic lets the mind seldom agree with the heart. Most times it makes the mind shout louder than the heart and in the end we don't even know what the heart has to say or dares to do.

Do what you feel in your heart to be right is then lost most of the times.

However sometimes the heart can be unexpectedly strong;
once in hard times I needed help from friends.
In good times my mind couldn't even begin to imagine what it would be like to ask friends such favors, but in that time I had to.
The heart got brave and shut up the mind and did the asking anyway.

Since then I am working really hard to make the mind the servant of my heart.
The heart is far more intelligent and it definitely can see better possibilities than the mind can ever perceive.

Thanks for linking my 48 day Challenge to a Better Me. I've definitely had ups and downs with this challenge and it's been harder than I thought. It has taught me a great deal about myself and I'm glad that I've started this challenge.

I wrote up my first post about my progress today. I am doing more exercising, but the post is an ode to cupcakes of sorts, so there are still some issues. ; )

Time to regroup

I had three goals.

1) That whole Wii Fit goal, hahahaha. FAIL. I think I've Wii Fitted twice in the last month.

2) I quit buying Twizzler Twerps but replaced that habit with a brand new and somewhat frightening addiction to various Betty Crocker fruit snacks. (I prefer the Scooby or the My Little Pony but am happy with the Ninja Turtles and the Tonkas too.)

3) There have been no more oatmeal cream pies. This has been a partial success but the person who was eating them has the ability to find all sorts of food in the cabinets that I did not know existed.

So... time for new goals.

1) Wii Fit 2xs a week. Surely I can... ugh.

2) Cut back on the My Little Ponies.

3) Clean all of the hard core junk outta the cabinets and DO NOT replace it with junk of any kind.

See you next month!

Ah, SMART goals. I remember those so well from my corporate life. Still a good approach, of course. Consider making sub-goals to help you achieve a larger over-arching goal for the year. This helps each step to feel less overwhelming.

Setting Realistic Goals

I couldn't agree with you more. I've tried numerous fad diets that takes the weight off quickly at first, but when I returned to "normal" eating the extra pounds would always return as well. It wasn't until I took "baby steps" and gradually changed my lifestlye and eating habits did the weight stay off. By gradually doing it the mind and body adapts better.
