I adored those books

I had a Disney collection, including a Disney record player that I believe had Dumbo on it. I loved it. It had all the classic Disneyfied stories. Sleeping Beauty was my favourite. You had to turn the page when your heard Tinkerbell.

I do believe that one of my nephews "inherited" the collection and promptly destroyed it. Sigh.

Sassymonkey and Sassymonkey Reads.

Listening to stories on records, tapes, cds & ipod

Rita,

You brought back such memories! I'd completely forgotten about that bell! And waiting ( a little impatiently) for it to sound so that I could turn the page. I'd sit cross-legged in front of our family's stereo and listen to The Frog Princess over and over again. The story was a little creepy actually but the magic was in the fact that the voice on the record matched the words on the page. I loved it! Thanks for bringing that memory back.

I listened to all the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and Magic Treehouse books on tape and CD with my kids driving from Bethesda, MD to Connecticut to see family for years when they were little. They made the miles fly. Books on tape are magic. Instead of a movie in the car, they make your child use their imagination to put images to the words they hear and the experience is so much more satisfying. We've since moved and even our small town library has tons of books on tape and CD. It's a must-stop before any long car ride. Charlotte's Web was a tearjerker on our way to the beach one year. And, although I'm no technical genius, in emergencies I can even download stories off the internet onto my iPhone to play in the car...provided I'm not the one driving.

Thanks! Willful Woman www.besidethestonewall.com

having a little laugh

Ok just so I just finished reading the story and I'm having a little laugh as well. For one, I'm amazed that I actually understand pidgin english, and to top it off, the story itself is very amusing to read. The pidgin english makes the story more fun and engaging to read.

My favorite part:

"’Nah! Yuh come in de woods tah kill meh animals.’
‘No, No! Ah eh come tah harm no body.’
‘Why yuh lookin’ at meh feet?’
“Ah eh look at yuh feet! Ah eh look at yuh feet!’
and dah was when ah look down
and see he cloven feet because
he was half man an’ half beast."

Great story Allyson!

You're probably right about the over-thinking. It really is just one of those negative comments that sometimes stick with you for life. And I need to let go of this one -- take what I need from it and move on. Thanks for your comment.

Tough but maybe you're over-thinking?

I'm pretty sure a post about being in amateur cast productions of Rocky Horror Picture should are anything but dry. ;-)

And, The Yellow Wallpaper is tough to write about without feeling dry. You need to be serious, this is serious stuff... and you don't want to be all emotional because, good grief it's The Yellow Wallpaper... feminism and all that...

But yea, sometimes it's tough to say what you need to say (oh good grief, now I'm channeling John Mayer. I clearly need more coffee... and to go read your RHPS post.)

flickristas, unite

Dearest AP, the Queen of North Carolina Bloggers - Warm greetings to you, my friend. Yes, I get lost in flickr as well. Sometimes I'll chase a tag, like "freak":

http://www.flickr.com/search/?s=int&z=t&w=all&q=freak&m=tags

Gaaah! Still, it's fun and serves as a break from the usual blog wars.

Chris Dollin - It's high time you teach your kids proper gang signage in that homeschool of yours, don't you think?

And, yes, the ordinary is almost always extraordinary. I've always believed that the best stories come from everyday life. Lovers of Danielle Steel and Robert Ludlum books will disagree with me. However, I will confess to loving one of their romance-lit or thriller books on the beach.

I have a bunch of holga and polaroid shots on my Flickr page, and I scanned the Monkees ticket. I saw three of them -- no Mike (who I guess was rich enough at that point from his white-out inheritance to miss the reunion tour.)

kperfetto, I'm a huge fan of Holga photographs. There's a big presence of these cheapo and toy camera shots on flickr. The images are amazing, often ethereal and mystical.

Even more ethereal and mystical -The Monkees. You saw all of them at once? Not just Davy and Mickey? I am very impressed and would love the backstory on that. (Hmmmm, maybe join flickr and the Ticket Stub group?)

instamatic

"I used to own and wield the lazy woman's snapshot machine, a Kodak Instamatic camera"

I love old, cheap -- especially cheap -- cameras. Currently I have two Holgas, eight Polaroids, a 110 (somewhere), and a brownie box camera that's over 100 years old. I use all of them. I'm still not digital.

I'll check out those Flickr goups -- admittedly, I haven't been around much. The ticket stub one intrigues me, as I throw nothing away. I still have the stub from a Monkees reunion show, my first concert.

I love the long stories that peple attach to their photographs at flickr. It makes you see that sometimes the most ordinary photos are anything but.

It also inspires me to go out and photograph the ordinary things in my life. My children aren't throwing gang signs yet. We are still in the bunny ears phase ;-)

Fantastic post, Grace! I really enjoyed reading this, and I have gotten "lost" on Flickr countless times, flitting from one eye-catching picture/story to the next. Gives me hope for the world sometimes against all evidence to the contrary.

I'm beginning, with these lessons, to see how you do it. Thanks.

Do you ever pull events out of order because they fit better that way?

I'm posting my list and writing for me. I"ll actually do it if I post here.

How hard would it be to include one more kid?
