The Hunger

We talk about it all the time, there is a huge overlap in carnal hunger and stomach hunger. One time we had an amazing meal and all we wanted to do was continue to eat the pastry chef and other chef. I think of it more like foodies are sensuous people and one adds to the other rather than serves as a replacement. Maybe I am just hopeful that I will continue to have sex. I find it be the best way to finish off any meal, but I must admit, sometimes I just settle for dessert.

Here was an example of when our carnal hunger was stirred: http://uncouthgourmands.com/2009/04/14/how-bizarre-at-the-baazar/

You've gotta stop doing that!

...reading my mind, that is! Just last night I made dinner for my daughter and roommates, and as I chopped and diced and tasted and simmered, I was mulling the explicit sensuality in the act, even though there was no holy chance in hell of the kind of culmination I was dreaming about. I think it's the convergence of the senses that enhances the similarities and makes food such a natural substitution for seduction. And - at least there is fire and steam somewhere. :)

Lara

Notions of Identity

That's a great idea -- an economical gift that keeps giving too :) I've gotten small basil plants and other potted herbs as gifts too, and always loved receiving them :)

green LA girl

Extra herbs = holiday gifts

Our herb garden is almost embarassingly prolific, so beyond sharing with my neighbors, I've started making various crafty items with them.

Excess rosemary and sage, as well as basil flowers and leaves (and bee balm, lemon balm, chamomile flowers, etc.) are drying for potpourri. They're also wired to grape vine wreaths and hanging in my kitchen. Excess cayenne and jalapeno peppers are drying in a sunny window, also to be attached to a wreath. I'll flavor olive oils and vinegars with various combinations of herbs, and am also trying my hand at soapmaking this year.

These crafts are very low-cost, but high impact. My brother-in-law loves to cook, so he'll get a culinary gift. My mother-in-law is looking forward to receiving a living wreath. I'm having some foreign students over this month for a potpourri-making party - I'll buy a few herbs that I wasn't able to grow, but most of our materials are my garden's excess.

Oh, if you need some rosemary, let me know. That darn bush is trying to take over the world.

great ideas

There are some great ideas here. I attended a slow food feast last weekend that benefited a nearby school that teaches children about garden science. The meal was made entirely from locally grown and raised food.

lisa from lisa is cooking

http://lisaiscooking.blogspot.com/

I am so addicted to food and eat emotionally. I always have, and I believe it was passed down to me by my mother who also admits to it. I suffer from depression/anxiety as well as Bulimia since I was 16. This combinaton of addiction to food-eating when my anxiety level is high/I'm depressed is deadly and it's been such a HARD thing for me to overcome. I feel hopeless sometimes. I don't know what to replace my food for...music? yoga? How do you break something you've done for so long?

Thank you for your post! I'm going to start a journal and see if it helps!

good post. I got a lot of good reading ideas. And glad to see Novella Carpenter has a blog. I so enjoy reading about urban farming. As sadly, my area is heading in that direction. Walgreens, Publix, Gas Station, <gasp> all coming or being built. :(

jojo

www.goodnessgraciousacres.com

twitter: goodnesgracious

The Spamwise Chronicles

I can definitely relate on the pickiness factor. When I was growing up, it was all my mom could do to get me to eat anything GREEN, much less garlic or spicy food.

Fast forward 20 years and it's been a complete reversal. Hah!

I'm sure he'll come around eventually.

Food aversion

You know, I think sometimes we take it for granted that other people will like/be comfortable with the things we like. I think mashed potatoes are sheer heaven, while my husband absolutely hates them. It's a texture thing.

I believe that we force a lot of things on kids that they are rejecting for valid reasons. The texture, acidity, etc., bothers them - sensory issues are common and can be really traumatic. Some kids may even have an allergy to certain fruits (fruit allergies are often tied to tree pollen allergies and can create an uncomfortable itching sensation).

My philosophy on food is to keep offering healthy options, require "just one taste" for new foods and then let it go. If I need to start pureeing veggies (and, since hubby won't eat ANY, I just may) to include in favorite foods, I will. Not as a sneaky maneuver, but as a palatable way to get essential nutrients.

Here's what else I believe... If I could live until I was 105, but it meant that I had to eat brussel sprouts every day, I'd say no way. =}

Christy
