Compartmentalize the Stress

I have some big-time stress in my life, so I try to keep everything else stress-free. I just focus all of my stress and anger and angst on that one area, and everything else, I am a laidback (it's all relative) lady. THis seems to work for me. There is no way I can stress out about everything and still have the mental and emotional capacity to get through the day.

The best part of what you said is that you are happy with how you look. Right there you have accomplished something major. If for some reason you never take off those last few pounds remember that you love the way you look. After all not all women are made to look like twigs, but we all should love the way we look.

Wow!!! I did the same thing... Only I did it for me and not for anyone else. I had to make choices and even if I hated not eating as much I never deprived myself of anything I love! And being a latina we love our food...LOL Good luck to you! And just remember... "You are beautiful not matter how big or how small you are it is all what is in the heart that makes you even more Glorious!" <<I wrote that. And I printed it and put it on my wall you should have seen my house...LOL :-)

What an awesome thing to realise you love your body. I found peace with mine by learning how much it could do - climbing and dancing.

Good For You

I'm so happy for you. It's a struggle for so many women to just accept what they look like and make themselves as gorgeous as they can be. Not that we shouldn't lose a couple of pounds and exercise if it will make us more fit, but too many of us burden ourselves with a quest for a media induced idea of perfection.

I didn't include it in my post but that show was what made me really take a good look at myself. I saw one woman with 44 in hips and thought why is she on there. It hit me that we had the same sized hips. SHows like that one and what not to wear have helped me a great deal. I have my clothes tailored now as the truth is pants will never fit me correctly. I now wear mostly fitted clothes so I don't look shapeless because if it fits my breasts it will not fit in my waist. So now even the thrift store finds go to the tailor. being short I have come to terms with heels mostly wedges and we are OK. Yes I have dimples that would be much cuter on my other cheeks but I am almost 40. THe other thing that got me there were my neices I have three that are shaped like me. They have no body image issues because to them I have always been the coolest auntee. I just think they are the cutest things ever. Just as with the woman from the show I realized they look like me so what was my problem?

As someone who's always had my own weight and body image issues, I really related to your post.

In fact last year I gave myself a challenge that I'll be updating soon on my own blog next month.

I don't know if you're familiar with the TV show "How To Look Good Naked" but I recently did a podcast interview with Kelly Park who was featured on the first episode this season.

It was very inspiring to hear how she viewed her body before the show and after.

I'd love to know what you think.

Good luck,

Drug reactions

Please don't jump immediately to blame a hospital for a reaction to a medication! There are many times a hospital's workers are to blame, but not in all of these cases.

Many kids have never received any medications at all, so it is hard to tell if they will have a reaction, which should not be mistaken for an allergy or an error from medication dosing.

Also, many adults have side effects from most drugs as well. They are usually common, like itching (pruritis) from a narcotic or localized pain from an injection. Even motrin can cause some stomach discomfort or nausea. Watch out, dont read the fine print on medication labels or the drug information found in the medication administration books. You would be overwhelmed. Kids get these same side effects. Side effects are NOT life threatening. Adverse reaction is the term for a POTENTIALLY harmful reaction. It is simply what "happens" from a medication being inside your body, much as having tylenol in your body decreases pain signals. Parents, be aware that ANYTHING that goes into the human body can be capable of doing something: food, or a common medication. Don't expect that a drug given by a doctor or nurse will be "magical" and free of any side effects. Be realistic.

Ways I laugh in the face of pain, or something

There are several ways I laugh or use humor
to soften the blow of pain and illness. I may blog about this, because I think it's worth a longer contemplation, but here are a few:

Shirts: I wear shirts that say something funny about my RSD or pain in general. It sometimes helps. I'm known for the shirts at the pain clinic, and it helps to make people laugh instead of making them feel pity.
Dark humor: I do a lot of dark humor. I have been known to make fun of the typical color changes I experience with RSD. I believe I've described it as a bodily mood ring. I also have dark humor about procedures and doctor's appointments.
Fox in Socks: If I can't get my mind of the pain, I've been known to read Dr. Seuss' Fox in Socks to make me laugh.

I'd say I use more of the dark humor in multiple areas. Perhaps that's just being a typical college student. Some people don't find it nearly as funny as I do. But it's how I respond to things. I make fun of my blindness, too.

Nickie's Nook
and Nickie's Nook the Book

It's a practice..being grateful....

I've been working on being grateful every day for over 12 years. It is definately a practice.

For me there was a lot of negativity in my life growing up so I became "negative" focused. I found out it was a habit I needed to break. I'm doing a lot better now. We can "change our story".
